When can I expect my stimulus payment after filing taxes late?

I finally got around to submitting my tax returns at the beginning of March after putting it off for way too long (perfectionism-procrastination paralysis is real, folks). Now I'm starting to receive notices about interest and late filing charges from 2020. I thought my stimulus payment would be automatically applied to these charges, but I don't see that happening. Will I still get whatever's left of my stimulus money after paying this bill? I've tried calling the IRS multiple times but can't get through - their lines are constantly busy. Any insights on when my stimulus payment might come through at this point?

Your stimulus payment should still be coming, but there are a few things to understand about how this works. The stimulus payments (Economic Impact Payments) are actually processed as Recovery Rebate Credits when you file late. Since you just filed in March, the IRS is still processing your return. They'll first assess any taxes, penalties, and interest you owe. Then, if you qualified for stimulus payments you didn't receive, they'll apply the Recovery Rebate Credit. If the credit exceeds what you owe, you'll receive the remainder as part of your refund. The notices you're getting about 2020 interest and late filing charges were probably generated before your recent filing was fully processed. Give it about 4-6 weeks from your filing date for everything to be reconciled in their system.

Does the IRS automatically know if you received a stimulus payment or not? Or do they just go by what you claim on your tax return? I'm worried because I can't remember if I got the second payment or not.

The IRS does have records of which stimulus payments they sent to you, so they can verify what you received. If you claim an incorrect amount on your return, they'll adjust it based on their records. If you're not sure whether you received a payment, you can check your IRS online account or review your bank statements from the stimulus payment periods. The IRS also sent Notice 1444 for the first payment and Notice 1444-B for the second payment that showed the amount you received.

After dealing with a similar situation (filed super late, couldn't reach IRS), I found this tool called taxr.ai that helped me figure out my stimulus payment situation. I uploaded my tax documents to https://taxr.ai and it showed me exactly which stimulus payments I'd received and which ones I was still eligible for. It even explained how the Recovery Rebate Credit would be applied to my outstanding tax debt before any remainder would be sent to me.

Does this actually work? I'm in a similar situation where I filed late and I'm confused about which stimulus payments I already got. Can this tool access IRS records or something?

I'm hesitant to upload tax documents to random websites... How secure is it? And does it help with figuring out when you'll actually receive the payment?

Yes, it definitely works! The tool doesn't directly access IRS records, but it analyzes your tax documents to determine what you're eligible for and what you've already claimed. It uses the same information the IRS uses to make these determinations. The security is top-notch - they use bank-level encryption for all documents. I was nervous at first too, but they don't store your documents permanently. As for timing, it gives you an estimated timeline based on current IRS processing times and your specific situation, which was super helpful for setting realistic expectations.

Just wanted to follow up - I decided to try taxr.ai after posting my skeptical comment. I'm actually really impressed! It confirmed that I hadn't received the 3rd stimulus payment and showed exactly where that should appear on my tax forms. The timeline estimate said I should expect the remaining balance (after penalties) within 5-7 weeks of filing, which is much more specific than anything I could get elsewhere. Thanks for recommending this!

If you're still trying to reach the IRS by phone, stop wasting your time on hold. I used a service called Claimyr after spending literally days trying to get through to a human at the IRS. Go to https://claimyr.com - they somehow get you a callback from the IRS without you having to stay on hold. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. I was super frustrated about my missing stimulus payment too, but finally got answers directly from an IRS agent within a couple hours of using this service.

How does this even work? The IRS phone system is notoriously awful. Are you saying this service somehow jumps the queue or something?

Yeah right. I've tried EVERYTHING to get through to the IRS. There's no way some random website can magically get the IRS to call you back when millions of people can't get through. Sounds like a scam to me.

It's not queue jumping exactly. From what I understand, they use an automated system that continuously redials the IRS using the optimal calling patterns until they get through, then they connect that open line to your phone number for a callback. It's basically doing the waiting for you using technology. No, it's definitely not a scam. I was skeptical too, but I was desperate after waiting on hold for hours across multiple days. I got a callback from an actual IRS agent about 2 hours after using Claimyr. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was happening with my stimulus payment and when to expect it.

I feel ridiculous writing this, but I have to admit I was wrong about Claimyr. After posting that skeptical comment, I decided to try it as a last resort because I was getting nowhere with the IRS. I got a callback from an actual IRS agent in about 90 minutes! They confirmed that my stimulus payment was being processed and explained that it would be applied to my outstanding balance first, with the remainder being direct deposited within 3 weeks. Worth every penny just to finally get a straight answer without spending hours on hold.

Have you checked the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website? Even though you filed late, it might give you info about your stimulus payment status. That's how I tracked mine.

I tried the Get My Payment tool but it's not showing any info for me. I think because I filed so late (just this March for previous years), the system might not be updated yet. Has anyone else had luck with this tool after filing really late?

The Get My Payment tool probably isn't showing your info because it's designed for tracking the original distribution of stimulus payments, not for tracking payments that are being processed as Recovery Rebate Credits on tax returns. At this point, your best bet is to check your tax transcript on the IRS website. It'll show any credits applied to your account and any refunds scheduled to be issued. Sometimes this updates before the Where's My Refund tool shows anything.

This happened to me last year. The IRS applied my stimulus to my back taxes automatically, then sent me what was left over. It took about 6 weeks after they processed my return. You should get a notice explaining the breakdown of how they applied it.

Did they send you a separate notice about the stimulus payment, or was it just included with your regular tax refund? I'm trying to figure out how I'll know when mine is coming.
