When Will IRS Send 2024 IP PIN? Address Change & Still Waiting on 2022 Return
Does anyone know the timeline for when the IRS distributes Identity Protection PINs for the current tax year (2024)? I relocated in mid-2023 and never received my IP PIN via postal mail at my new address. I've updated my address with USPS and on my most recent return, but I'm concerned about potential delays accessing my IP PIN for this filing season. Additionally, I'm still awaiting resolution on my 2022 return which remains in processing status. Are these issues potentially connected? I've verified my address is correct in the IRS database through my online account.

I went through this exact nightmare last year! The IP PINs for 2024 started going out in December 2023 and should continue through February. Since you moved, you'll likely need to retrieve your IP PIN online through the IRS Get IP PIN tool rather than waiting for mail. I had to do this after my move and it was actually easier than waiting for mail. As for your 2022 return - they're probably not directly connected issues, but the address change might be slowing things down. My 2021 return took 14 months to process after I moved mid-year. So relieved when it finally came through!

•Is there a deadline to retrieve the IP PIN online? My tax preparer needs this ASAP as I'm trying to file before the end of January due to an international move!

•Thank you for the precise timeline! I've been checking my mailbox exactly 6 days a week since December 28th hoping to see that IRS envelope. Knowing they're still sending them through February gives me some peace of mind. Really appreciate the insight on the online retrieval option too.

•Isn't it absurd that they're still using snail mail as the primary delivery method for something so critical? What is this, 1995? And then they wonder why there are so many processing delays when people can't access their PINs on time?

•I had this same experience last tax season. Moved in October 2022 and never got my IP PIN in the mail. Had to retrieve it online, but once I did that, my return processed normally. For reference, my 2022 return took about 3 weeks to process after I submitted with the online-retrieved IP PIN.

Have you tried contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service about your 2022 return? I'm in a similar situation with a delayed 2022 return, but mine was held up because of identity verification issues, not address changes. Seems like your situation is even more complicated than the standard delays people are experiencing. Did you file a change of address form (Form 8822) separately from your tax return?

•Good question about Form 8822. This could be the issue if you only updated your address through USPS but not directly with the IRS. Have you checked your tax transcript online to see if there are any specific codes related to your 2022 return that might explain the delay? Sometimes there are clues there that aren't communicated elsewhere.

•I believe you can also notify them of address changes by calling, though I'm not entirely sure if that's as effective as Form 8822. In my experience, anything submitted on paper seems to take much longer to process these days, so perhaps that's contributing to the delay with your 2022 return.

According to IRS Publication 5367, IP PINs for the 2024 filing season were scheduled for distribution beginning December 2023. Per Regulation 26 CFR § 301.6109-4, taxpayers with existing IP PINs who haven't received their new one can retrieve it through the online portal starting January 15, 2024. For your 2022 return issue, I'd recommend analyzing your tax transcript using https://taxr.ai - it can decode those cryptic transaction codes and tell you exactly where your return is stuck in processing. The tool helped me identify that my return had a 570 hold code that was related to an address verification issue, which sounds similar to your situation.

•I'm concerned about using third-party tools with my sensitive tax information! How do you know this taxr.ai thing is legitimate and not just harvesting people's financial data? I feel like everyone should be extremely cautious about entering their transcript information anywhere outside the official IRS website.

Have you tried going to the "Get An IP PIN" tool directly on IRS.gov? I was in the same boat last year and banging my head against the wall waiting for mail that never came. 😂 The online tool actually worked surprisingly well - I had to verify my identity with ID.me first (bring a government ID and be ready for a selfie), but once that was done, I got my IP PIN immediately. No need to wait for snail mail! For your 2022 return, you might need to file Form 911 (Taxpayer Advocate request) if it's been more than 6 months. Persistence pays off with the IRS!

•The online tool worked for me too. Direct, simple process. Did you have to create a new IRS account or did you already have one? I'm wondering if having an existing account makes the process faster.

According to the IRS.gov website, IP PINs are typically mailed by mid-January, but with your address change, that's definitely complicating things. I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to get through to an IRS agent directly instead of waiting on hold for hours. I was skeptical at first, but after trying to call the IRS for 3 weeks straight about my missing IP PIN, I used Claimyr and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They were able to verify my identity over the phone and help me get access to my IP PIN immediately. They can also check on the status of your 2022 return while you have them on the line.

•I'm not sure about paying a service just to talk to the IRS. Doesn't seem right that we need to pay extra just to get basic government services. Have you tried calling right when they open? I usually have better luck getting through if I call at 7:01 AM Eastern time, though I might still need to wait 30-45 minutes.

Used Claimyr last week. Worth every penny. Saved hours of redial frustration. Agent confirmed my IP PIN issue was fixable. Got it resolved in one call. No more stress.

Omg I had the EXACT same prob last yr! IP PIN never came after moving. Had to get it online thru the IRS portal. Kinda confusing tbh but worked after a couple tries. For ur 2022 return - might be stuck in the identity verification queue? Mine was held up for like 6 mos b/c they couldn't verify my identity with my new address. Super frustrating but eventually got sorted.

You might want to consider setting up USPS Informed Delivery if you haven't already. It's possible, though not guaranteed, that this could help you track if/when the IRS sends your IP PIN. Additionally, you could potentially request mail forwarding from your old address if you haven't done so. In terms of your 2022 return, it might be worth checking if you qualify for assistance from the Taxpayer Advocate Service, particularly if you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay.

Think of the IP PIN system like a digital deadbolt that changes every year - the IRS is basically sending you a new key for 2024. The online retrieval system is like having a spare key hidden under the mat - it's there when you need it! For your 2022 return, the address change might be like telling the post office where you live but forgetting to tell your grandmother - the IRS might be sending notices to your old address. Have you checked both your old and new address mail for any IRS correspondence?

I'm dealing with a very similar situation! Moved last spring and never got my 2024 IP PIN in the mail either. I ended up using the "Get an IP PIN" tool on IRS.gov after reading through these comments - it actually worked pretty smoothly once I got through the ID.me verification process. Just a heads up though, make sure you have a good internet connection and plenty of time when you do the identity verification - mine timed out twice before I got through successfully. For your 2022 return still in processing, I'd definitely recommend checking your online transcript first to see what codes are showing up. Sometimes there are specific hold codes that can give you clues about what's causing the delay. The address change could definitely be a factor - I had similar issues when I moved mid-tax season a few years back.

•Thanks for sharing your experience with the online tool! I'm curious - how long did the ID.me verification process actually take once you got through? I'm planning to try this route but want to set aside enough time. Also, when you mention checking the transcript for hold codes, are there specific codes I should be looking for that indicate address-related delays? I'm new to reading these transcripts and they look pretty cryptic to me!
