Do We Need To Report This $2,544 Rhode Island State Tax Refund (Form 1099-G) On Our 2024 Federal Taxes?
Got this weird notice in the mail from the IRS with both me and my husband's names on it. It's a Form 1099-G from the State of Rhode Island Division of Taxation. Last year was our first time filing married jointly. The notice says: State of Rhode Island Division of Taxation Phone (401) 574-8829 Ext 3 One Capitol ⑉ TTY Via 711 Providence RI 02908-1600 Fax: (401) 574-8919 Email: tax.assist@tax.ri.gov 1099G NALIC Notice ID Account ID PERSONAL INCOME TAX THIS IS NOT A BILL 1099-G CALENDAR YEAR Any questions, call Taxpayer Certain Government Payments 2024 Assistance at the number above OMB NO 1545-0120 Corrected (if Checked) Copy B for Recipient The document states "This is important tax information and is being furnished to the Internal Revenue Service. If you are required to file a return, a negligence penalty or other sanction may be imposed on you if this income is taxable and the IRS determines that it has not been reported." PAYER'S INFORMATION STATE OF RHODE ISLAND Department of Revenue Division of Taxation One Capitol Hill Providence RI 02908-5801 Box 2 State or Local income Tax Refunds: $2,544.00 Box 3 Refund is for Tax Year: 2023 There's also some explanation text: "Box 2 Shows refunds, credits, or offsets of state or local income tax you received. If there is an entry in this box, it may be taxable to you if you deducted the tax paid as an itemized deduction on your Federal income tax return. Even if you did not receive the amount shown, for example, because it was credited to your estimated tax, it is still taxable if it was deducted. Any interest received on this amount must be included as interest income on your return. See the instructions for US Form 1040 or 1040A." "Box 3 - Identifies the tax year for which the refund, credit or offsets shown in box 2 was made. If there is no entry in this box, the refund is for 2023 taxes" Anyone know what we're supposed to do with this for filing this year? Does this mean we need to report this $2,544.00 refund as income on our federal taxes? Is it important? We're confused because we've never received this form before, and I'm not sure if we need to submit it with our tax return or just keep it for our records.

That sounds like a CP62 notice. Its basically just confirmation that the IRS processed your return as married filing jointly. You don't need to do anything special with it for this years taxes, just keep it with your records.

Hey! If you want to really understand what's happening with your transcripts and notices, check out taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes everything and tells you exactly what's going on. Costs $4.99 but saved me hours of googling and stress. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

Interesting... how accurate is it? Does it actually explain the notices in normal human language?

Super accurate! It literally breaks everything down step by step and tells you exactly what each code and notice means. Plus it predicts refund dates within like a 3-day window
