State Tax Refund Not Issued - Federal Scheduled for the 24th
According to IRS Publication 17 and my state's tax code (Section 6.2), refunds should be processed within 21-45 days of acceptance. My federal return has been processed and scheduled for direct deposit on the 24th of this month (confirmation code TX-4402). However, my state return shows as "received" in their system but no issuance date has been provided. I've attempted to locate contact information per the instructions on Form ST-1040 but have been unsuccessful in reaching a representative. My medical expenses this year require timely processing of both refunds, and I've maintained detailed records of all submission confirmations and status updates. Is there a direct contact number for state tax authorities that bypasses the automated system? Has anyone experienced similar delays with state processing while federal was completed?

State tax processing operates on different timelines than federal returns, despite being filed simultaneously. The IRS and state tax authorities maintain separate processing infrastructures with different verification protocols. Your federal refund being scheduled while state remains in "received" status is actually quite common during peak processing periods (March-April). Most states have a separate verification queue for returns claiming certain deductions or credits, and their systems typically have lower processing capacity than the federal infrastructure.

Could you walk me through the exact steps to check my state processing status? I've been trying to find this information but the state website is much less user-friendly than the IRS one. Is there a specific section I should be looking for?

Just to add some reassurance here - I've gone through this exact situation three years in a row. My federal always processes faster than my state return. Last year I got my federal on March 18th but didn't see my state refund until April 29th! It's frustrating but completely normal. The state systems just don't have the same resources as the IRS.

Which state are you in? I had a similar issue last year with my Arizona return. Took FOREVER compared to federal. The phone numbers vary by state, and some are way more helpful than others.

Back on February 15th, I was in the exact same situation - federal with a date but state stuck in limbo. After trying their published number for three straight days (waiting 45+ minutes each time before getting disconnected), I remembered that someone in a previous tax season mentioned Claimyr. Used their service on February 18th to connect with my state tax agency - https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - and was connected in about 15 minutes. The representative confirmed my return was in the verification queue due to my medical expense deductions and estimated another 2-3 weeks. At least I got a real answer instead of the automated message! Worth considering if you need a definitive update on your situation.

Do these services actually work though? I always wonder if they're just taking advantage of people who are desperate to get their refunds. Couldn't you just keep calling the regular number and eventually get through?

I just used Claimyr 3 days ago after waiting exactly 97 minutes on hold and then getting disconnected! Got through in 14 minutes with their service. The state tax rep told me my return would be processed by April 15th - which is crucial because I need the money for a medical procedure scheduled for the 18th!

I went through this exact situation last month. Here's what worked for me: • Called the state tax office at 7:58am (2 minutes before they officially open) • Selected option 4, then 2, then 3 in their phone tree • Got a real person who could actually see my return status • They confirmed it was in final review and issued 3 days later The frustrating part is that their online system NEVER updated until the money was already in my account. So annoying when you're checking daily and getting no information!

Did you find any online resources that accurately showed your state refund status? The state website keeps showing "processing" for me but doesn't give any timeline estimates like the IRS Where's My Refund tool does.

Did u have to verify ur identity w/ the state? My fed went thru fine but state sent me this weird letter asking for docs. Wondering if that's why mine is taking so long?

I tried the early morning call approach for my state (Colorado) and still got stuck in a 40+ minute queue. Did you find that this trick works consistently or was it maybe just luck that one time? I've heard some states are much worse than others for phone wait times.

On March 12th, I was in exactly this situation - federal with a DD date but state showing nothing. I was getting concerned because I needed to verify if they had my correct banking information. When I finally got my state transcript on March 19th, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze it and discovered my state return had a verification hold code that wasn't clearly explained on their website. The tool explained what each code meant and gave me an estimated timeline based on similar cases. My state refund was issued on March 27th, exactly in the timeframe the analysis predicted. Saved me a lot of anxiety wondering what was happening.

I'm not sure how a third-party tool would have access to state-specific tax codes and processing timelines. Doesn't each state have their own completely different system? How would this tool know the specific hold codes for 50 different state tax systems?

Be careful about calling state tax offices right now. We're in peak processing season, and some states are flagging accounts for "excessive inquiries" which can trigger additional review. This happened to my brother-in-law who called multiple times about his state refund, and it ended up delaying his refund by an additional 30 days due to being pulled for manual review. If your federal is already scheduled, I'd suggest waiting at least until that deposits before escalating with the state agency. Each contact can restart certain verification timers in their system.

Had a similar situation last year that turned into a complete nightmare. 😩 My state return showed as "received" for 8 weeks with no updates. Turns out they had sent me a letter requesting verification that never arrived at my address. After 90 days they just closed my case and I had to refile the entire return! Check your mailbox carefully and maybe even call to confirm they don't need anything from you. The most frustrating part was that their online system never showed any indication that they needed additional information from me!
