Processing Time for Electronically Filed Amended Return with IP PIN?

I'm trying to plan my next steps with the IRS and need to understand the timeline for my amended return. Here's my situation step-by-step: 1. I filed my original return in January 2024 2. Discovered an error in my foreign income reporting 3. Submitted an amended return electronically on March 15th using my IP PIN 4. Checked the Where's My Amended Return tool but no status yet I need to know the typical processing timeframe for this specific situation. I understand regular returns have standard processing times, but I want to know if having an IP PIN affects the amended return timeline. I deserve clear information from the IRS about when my case will be resolved, especially as someone dealing with international tax situations.

Well... typically amended returns take about 16 weeks to process when filed electronically. That's the standard timeframe. But with an IP PIN... I'm not entirely sure if that changes things? The PIN is mostly for identity verification during initial filing. I don't think it would slow down the amended return process, but I could be wrong.

Has anyone actually had their amended return processed in 16 weeks recently? • I filed mine electronically in October 2023 • Still waiting for processing to complete • Called multiple times with no clear answers • WMR tool hasn't updated in months The 16 weeks seems more like a minimum than a maximum timeframe!

I had an amended return processed last year with an IP PIN. Took exactly 18 weeks from submission to completion. The IP PIN didn't seem to affect it at all from what I could tell. My previous amended returns (before I needed an IP PIN) took about the same time.

From my experience, electronic amended returns are currently taking between 20-24 weeks to process. The IP PIN verification happens at the front end during submission and adds approximately 0 days to the overall timeline. The 16-week estimate from the IRS hasn't been accurate since 2021.

Did you receive an acknowledgment of receipt for your amended return? The IRS typically sends a confirmation when they receive Form 1040-X electronically, though it can take 3-5 business days to generate. Also, are you monitoring your transcript for TC 971 code which indicates an amended return has been received into the system?

Think of the amended return process like a restaurant with a long wait list. Your IP PIN is just the reservation confirmation - it gets you in the door but doesn't change how long the kitchen takes to prepare your meal. Have you checked your account transcript online? That's where you'll see movement before the Where's My Amended Return tool updates.

I appreciate this question about the acknowledgment. When I filed my amended return on February 12th, I received the confirmation email on February 15th. However, it still took until June 28th for the actual processing to complete. The acknowledgment only means they received it, not that they're working on it yet.

Doesn't the processing time also depend on what you're amending? Foreign income reporting changes can trigger additional review processes, right? And aren't electronic amendments supposed to be faster than paper ones? The current backlog at IRS is still affecting processing times across all return types, including amendments with or without IP PINs.

According to IRM 21.5.3.4, amended returns involving foreign income reporting are indeed subject to specialized review. As of the January 2024 update to processing guidelines, these returns are routed through the Foreign Returns Compliance team which adds approximately 4-6 weeks to standard processing times. The IP PIN authentication occurs during initial submission and does not affect this specialized review pathway.

Been there. Waited 32 weeks for mine. No updates online. Called IRS repeatedly. Always busy. Used Claimyr.com to get through. Got an agent in 20 minutes. Found out my return was just sitting there. They expedited it. Had my refund two weeks later. Worth the fee to not waste days redialing.

Oh come ON with these service recommendations! Every thread has someone pushing some paid service! The IRS phone system is frustrating but if you call right when they open you CAN get through! I'm so tired of people acting like you HAVE to pay some third party just to talk to the government agency WE FUND with our tax dollars!!!

According to the IRS's own data (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue), they're still answering less than 35% of calls, with average wait times over 40 minutes for those who do get through. I've personally tried the "call right when they open" approach multiple times without success. Services like Claimyr use technology to navigate the phone tree and wait on hold so you don't have to - seems reasonable for people who value their time or have urgent issues.
