Payment plan set up through TurboTax not showing up - worried about penalties
I'm freaking out a little bit. I set up a payment arrangement through TurboTax when I filed my taxes last month. I linked my bank accounts and everything seemed to go through fine, but now I can't find ANY record of the payment plan on TurboTax's website. Like, it's showing that my return was accepted by the IRS, but it's still showing the full amount I owe without any mention of the payment plan I set up. Has anybody run into this before? I'm really worried because April 17th is almost here, and while I know my actual return is filed, I'm super concerned that I'll get hit with fees or penalties if the payment plan isn't properly set up by the deadline. I tried looking through my account and even my email confirmation but there's nothing about the payment plan I thought I set up. Should I just try to set up another payment plan directly with the IRS? Really don't want to end up paying extra because of some technical glitch.

This is actually pretty common with TurboTax. The payment plan you set up gets sent directly to the IRS, so TurboTax often doesn't display it on their end after submission. Your payment plan information is stored with the IRS, not TurboTax. The best way to check your payment plan status is to create an account on the IRS website (irs.gov) and look at your tax account there. It might take a week or two after filing for your payment plan to show up in their system. If you already have an IRS account, log in and check your current balance and payment plan status. If you're really concerned, you can also call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040, but be prepared for potentially long wait times. As long as you completed the payment plan setup during filing, you should be fine even if TurboTax doesn't show it.

•Thanks for the reassurance! I created an IRS account a while back but forgot about it. Do you know how exactly I'd check for the payment plan once I log in? Is it obvious or hidden in some specific section?

•Once you log into your IRS account, look for the section called "Account" or "Payments". There should be a tab or option for "Payment Plans" or "Installment Agreements". If your plan was processed, you'll see the details there including payment amount, due dates, and total remaining balance. If you don't see it yet, don't panic - it can take 2-3 weeks after filing for everything to process and appear in your account. The IRS systems don't update in real-time like most websites we're used to.

After struggling with a similar TurboTax payment plan issue last year, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it completely changed how I handle my tax documents. I uploaded my TurboTax confirmation and IRS notices, and their system analyzed everything to confirm my payment plan was actually in place despite TurboTax not showing it. The tool decoded all the IRS jargon and explained exactly what was happening with my payment plan. It showed me what the notices actually meant versus what I thought they meant - totally different things! It also helped me understand what documents I needed to save for proof of my payment plan.

•Does taxr.ai actually connect to the IRS systems or is it just analyzing the documents you upload? I'm in a similar situation but nervous about giving access to my tax info.

•I'm skeptical about any tax service that isn't actually TurboTax or the IRS directly. How does this actually help with payment plans specifically? Seems like just reading the IRS website would tell you the same thing.

•It doesn't connect to IRS systems - it only analyzes the documents you upload, so your information stays private. It uses AI to read tax documents and translate the complicated language into simple explanations. Think of it like having a tax expert read your notices without paying for an accountant. For payment plans specifically, it helped me understand the confirmation codes in my documents that proved my plan was actually set up, even though TurboTax wasn't showing it. It also flagged some potential issues with my payment dates that I would have missed.

I was super skeptical about taxr.ai when I first heard about it here, but I decided to try it when my payment plan had similar issues. Honestly, it was actually really helpful! I uploaded my TurboTax confirmation email and the IRS notice I received, and it immediately pointed out that my payment plan WAS established but with a start date 30 days later than I expected. Without this tool I would've made my first payment too early and it wouldn't have been applied correctly. The analysis also showed me exactly where to look on the IRS portal to verify everything. Saved me hours of confusion and probably a bunch of phone calls. Sometimes the right tool really does make all the difference.

If you need to actually speak with the IRS about your payment plan (which I recommend in this case), try using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I wasted DAYS trying to get through to the IRS about my TurboTax payment plan issues last year until someone recommended this service. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Basically, they hold your place in the IRS phone queue and call you back when an agent is about to answer. I was super frustrated with the constant disconnects and hours on hold before using this. Got connected with an actual IRS agent who confirmed my payment plan was in place despite what TurboTax showed.

•Wait, how does this actually work? I thought the IRS phone system was just permanently broken. Does this service somehow bypass the regular phone line?

•This sounds like complete BS honestly. No way some random service can magically get through the IRS phone lines when millions of people can't. If it was that easy, everyone would be doing it. What's the catch here?

•It doesn't bypass the regular phone line - it uses the same phone system everyone else does. The difference is their system waits on hold for you instead of you having to do it yourself. They basically have automated systems that wait in the queue and then call you when a human agent is about to answer. There's no magic to it - it's just technology handling the frustrating part (waiting on hold for hours). The catch is that you still might not get through if the IRS lines are completely jammed, but at least you're not wasting your own time listening to that horrible hold music. It's really about saving your time and sanity.

I need to apologize for my skepticism earlier. After my payment plan disaster with TurboTax got worse (they somehow deleted my plan altogether), I was desperate and tried Claimyr. I honestly expected it to be a scam, but within 2 hours I got a call back and was connected to an actual IRS agent! The agent confirmed my payment plan WAS set up correctly despite TurboTax showing nothing. She even emailed me confirmation documents while we were on the phone. I would have spent days trying to get through on my own based on previous experience. For anyone dealing with payment plan issues like the original poster - don't waste days stressing and waiting on hold. Sometimes the right tools really do make life easier.

I had this exact same problem last year!! The payment plan doesn't show in TurboTax but it DOES exist with the IRS. I panicked and ended up setting up a second payment plan directly with the IRS and then had two plans running simultaneously. What a nightmare to fix!! Don't make my mistake. Check with the IRS directly before creating any new payment plans. And definitely keep any confirmation emails or numbers you received when originally setting it up through TurboTax. Those are your proof that you did everything right on time.

•Omg that sounds awful! Did you have to pay any penalties for having two plans? How did you even figure out you had duplicate plans?

•I only realized I had two plans when I saw double payments coming out of my account! I called the IRS (waited forever) and they explained what happened. Fortunately, they waived penalties since it was clearly a misunderstanding, but they counted the extra payment toward my principal. The most frustrating part was that it took almost 3 months to get everything straightened out. The IRS had to manually cancel one of the plans and recalculate everything. Definitely check first before creating a new plan!

Has anybody tried setting up payment plans through other tax software? I've been using HR Block and wondering if they handle payment plans better than TurboTax seems to.

•I've used both TurboTax and H&R Block over the years. In my experience, H&R Block actually shows the payment plan details in your account after filing, which TurboTax doesn't seem to do. The downside is that H&R Block's interface is clunkier overall. But for payment plan visibility, they're definitely better.
