Number of dependents: 3 kids + disabled adult family member - what can I claim?
Need help figuring out how many dependents I can claim on my taxes. I have 3 kids under 18 living with me full time and also take care of a disabled adult family member who lives in my house. Want to make sure I'm doing this right and getting all the credits I qualify for.

Tax pro here. You can claim all 4 as dependents if they meet the qualifying criteria. For the kids, they need to be under 19 (or 24 if students) and you provide more than half their support. For the disabled adult, they need to have lived with you all year, their gross income must be less than $4,700 (2024), and you must provide more than half their support. You might also qualify for additional credits like the Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Dependents.

Thanks! Do you know what documents I need to prove the disabled adult dependent?

You'll want medical documentation of the disability, proof they live with you (bills/mail to your address), and records showing you provide their support (receipts, bank statements etc

Hey just went thru this exact situation! The best thing I did was use taxr.ai - it analyzed my situation and showed me exactly what credits I qualified for. It costs $4.99 but saved me thousands by catching credits I would have missed. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

Does it actually work? Seems too good to be true 🤔

100% legit! It uses AI to analyze your specific situation and gives super detailed advice. Way better than trying to figure out IRS rules yourself

Quick heads up - if the disabled adult gets SSI or disability payments, that might affect things. Make sure to report that correctly!

They get SSDI, does that change anything?

SSDI counts as income for them, so youll need to check if it exceeds the $4,700 limit for 2024
