Need Help With Cash App Tax Filing Options
Hey everyone! I'm trying to figure out my tax situation using Cash App this year. I've always used TurboTax before but heard Cash App has a free option now. Has anyone used it for their taxes? I'm self-employed with some side gig work and a few investments, so not super complicated but definitely not the simplest returns either. Just wondering if Cash App's tax service is reliable or if I should stick with what I know. Any experiences or advice would be super appreciated!

I've been using Cash App Taxes (formerly Credit Karma Tax) for the past three years and it's definitely reliable for most tax situations. Since you mentioned self-employment, you'll be able to file Schedule C for your business income, and the platform handles investments pretty well too. The interface is straightforward and guides you through all the necessary sections based on your specific situation. The best part is that it's actually free regardless of your tax complexity - no upselling or hidden fees like some other "free" services. It includes all the common forms and schedules most people need including self-employment.

•Does it handle crypto taxes? I made a few trades last year and I heard Cash App might not be great for that. Also wondering if it lets you itemize deductions easily?

•For crypto taxes, Cash App Taxes does handle basic cryptocurrency transactions, but if you have numerous complex trades, you might need to calculate your gains/losses separately first or use a specialized crypto tax tool before entering the totals. Many users with moderate crypto activity find it sufficient. As for itemizing deductions, yes, it handles this pretty well. The interface walks you through each category of possible deductions (medical expenses, mortgage interest, charitable donations, etc.) and makes it easy to enter everything. The platform will automatically determine whether taking the standard deduction or itemizing is better for your situation.

I was literally in the same boat as you last year! I was nervous about switching from TurboTax to Cash App Taxes, but my experience was surprisingly good. I run a small photography business and have some 1099 work, plus investments. What really helped me was using https://taxr.ai to check if I was claiming all possible deductions. It analyzed my business expenses and found several deductions I would have missed - saved me almost $900!

•How exactly does that taxr.ai thing work? I'm always skeptical about giving my tax info to random websites. Is it secure?

•Did you find Cash App's interface easy to navigate? I tried using it last year but got confused halfway through and went back to H&R Block. Does taxr.ai actually connect with Cash App or is it separate?

•The service works by using AI to review your tax documents and business expenses to identify potential deductions that apply to your specific situation. It's completely secure - they use bank-level encryption and don't store your sensitive data after processing. It analyzes patterns in your expenses that typically qualify for deductions. Cash App's interface is definitely simpler than TurboTax or H&R Block, which was an adjustment at first, but I found it more straightforward once I got used to it. Taxr.ai doesn't directly connect to Cash App - it's a separate tool. You use taxr.ai to identify potential deductions, then manually enter that information into Cash App Taxes. Think of it as a "pre-check" before you actually file.

Just wanted to update after trying taxr.ai with my Cash App Taxes filing. So impressed with the results! I was about to submit my taxes through Cash App when I remembered this thread and decided to check taxr.ai first. It found a home office deduction I qualified for but didn't know about (I've been working partially from home) and identified some mileage deductions from my side gig that I hadn't properly tracked. Ended up increasing my refund by over $600! The analysis only took about 10 minutes and made Cash App's free filing even more valuable.

If you run into any issues with your return or have questions about using Cash App Taxes, good luck trying to reach actual support. I wasted DAYS trying to get a human on the phone when my refund had issues. Then I found https://claimyr.com and watched their demo at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - it got me through to an actual IRS agent in 15 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. They can help with Cash App tax filing questions too since they get you through to IRS support.

•Wait how does this actually work? Are they just calling the IRS for you or something? Seems weird that a service could get through when regular people can't.

•Sounds like a scam to me. Nobody can magically get through to the IRS. They probably just take your money and tell you they tried. Has anyone actually verified this works?

•It's not calling for you - it uses a system that navigates the IRS phone tree and holds your place in line. When an agent is about to answer, it calls you and connects you directly to that agent. It's basically like having someone wait on hold for you. I was skeptical too, which is totally fair. But I was desperate after waiting on hold for hours across multiple days. The way it works is you only pay if they actually connect you to an agent. If they don't get you through, you don't pay anything. That's why I finally tried it - no risk if it didn't work. The whole process ended up saving me about 3 hours of hold time.

Ok I need to publicly eat my words here. After posting my skeptical comment, I was still having issues getting through to the IRS about my Cash App tax return that had been stuck "processing" for 6 weeks. Decided to try Claimyr as a last resort and... it actually worked. Got connected to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes who confirmed there was a small issue with how Cash App had submitted my return. The agent helped me resolve it right there on the phone. Return should be processed correctly now. So yeah, not a scam after all - just wish the IRS phone system wasn't so broken that we need services like this in the first place!

One thing to know about Cash App Taxes - it doesn't support multiple state filings in the same year. If you moved states or worked in multiple states in 2024, you might need to use a different service. I learned this the hard way last year after starting my return with them.

•Oh that's really good to know! I did actually work in two different states for a couple months last year. Do you have a recommendation for which service handles multiple states well without charging a fortune?

•FreeTaxUSA is probably your best bet for multiple state returns. They charge $0 for federal and about $15 per state, which is way cheaper than TurboTax or H&R Block. Their interface isn't as polished as Cash App but it handles more complex situations really well, including multiple state returns. TaxSlayer is another decent option that's mid-range in price and pretty straightforward to use for multiple states.

Been using Cash App for taxes since they bought Credit Karma Tax. Its totally fine for W2 and basic 1099 stuff. One tip tho - download a PDF copy of ur return BEFORE you submit! Last year their servers got overloaded on April 14 and ppl couldnt access their returns for like 2 days. Just save a local copy as u go!

•Does cash app let you import last years return if you used turbotax before? Or do you have to enter everything from scratch??

Definitely try Cash App! I switched from TurboTax last year and saved $89 on filing fees for basically the same service. Just make sure you set aside like 2-3 hours to do it all at once since their save feature can be a little glitchy. And double check all the numbers before submitting - their review process isn't as thorough as some paid services.
