IRS Identity Verification for 2023 Tax Return: What to Expect and Tips
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble verifying my identity for my 2023 tax return. Has anyone else gone through this? What should I expect when I finally get through to someone on the phone? I'm kinda nervous about the whole process and could use some advice.

In terms of identity verification, having your documents organized and ready is half the battle. Verification is crucial for preventing fraud, but it does create inefficiencies in the system. Though tools like Claimyr can be useful, they come at a cost, so weigh your options carefully. Always look for alternative, free methods before resorting to paid services. Remember, patience is key, and persistence usually pays off in the end!

Remember to document everything! Write down the date, time, and name of who you spoke with. CYA always 💯

Ugh, the IRS and their verification process 🙄 It's such a pain. I had to go through this last year and it took forever. Good luck!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken 😤

I know it sounds crazy, but it really worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho.

While Claimyr seems like a great tool for those who value time over money, keep in mind it's an added expense on top of already complicated tax issues. It's great for emergencies, but maybe not for everyone.

Update: Finally got through after 2 hours on hold. The verification process wasn't as bad as I thought. Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Glad it worked out! What kind of questions did they ask?

Mostly about past addresses, employers, and some details from previous tax returns. Nothing too crazy!

Anyone else feel like the IRS is stuck in the stone age? Like, why can't they modernize their systems already? 🦕

To be fair, they're dealing with sensitive info. Better safe than sorry, I guess?

@profile 14 Sure, but there's gotta be a better way. Other countries have figured it out!

It takes time to update such a large system without compromising security. Let's hope they're working on it!

Here's what you need to know about the IRS identity verification process: 1. Have all your documents ready: tax returns, W-2s, 1099s, etc. 2. Be prepared to answer questions about your financial history 3. They might ask about previous addresses or employers 4. Make sure you're in a quiet place with good phone reception 5. Be patient - the call might take a while Remember, the agent is just doing their job. Stay calm and polite, even if it gets frustrating. Good luck!

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Do you know how long the call usually takes?

It can vary, but in my experience, plan for at least 30-45 minutes. Better to overestimate!

And don't forget to have a charger handy if you're using a mobile phone. These calls can really drain your battery.

Pro tip: call early in the morning or late in the evening. Less wait time 👍

Totally agree, I called at 8 AM sharp and got through much faster than when I called midday.

The online tool is hit or miss for many people. It seems to work better for those with less complicated tax histories.

Been there, done that. Make sure you have your SSN and all your tax docs ready. They'll probably ask you some security questions about your financial history too. Don't sweat it, just be prepared!
