IRS Identity Verification Nightmare: Tips for Getting Through and What to Expect
Has anyone else had trouble verifying their identity with the IRS? I've been trying to get through to them for days now. It's so frustrating! I have all my documents ready, but I can't seem to get a hold of an actual person. Any tips on how to speed up this process or what to expect when I finally do get through?

I found a way to get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Check out this video: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

I get it, but for me, it was worth every penny. Time is money, ya know?

While Claimyr does provide a solution, it would be great if the IRS provided a more responsive service without needing to resort to paid services.

Here's what to expect when you finally get through: 1. They'll ask for your full name, DOB, and SSN 2. They'll verify your address and maybe ask about previous addresses 3. You might need to provide info from past tax returns 4. Be ready with a photo ID and a utility bill or bank statement 5. They may ask security questions about your credit history The whole process took me about 30 minutes once I actually got someone on the line. Good luck!

Thank you so much! This is super helpful. Did they ask about employment history too?

No problem! They didn't ask me about employment, but it might vary. Better to have that info handy just in case.

Iβd recommend also having your IRS account set up online. Sometimes, you can verify certain details without having to call.

I've been dealing with this for THREE MONTHS now. Every time I call, it's a different story. One agent tells me my docs are fine, the next says they're not. I'm about to lose my mind π€―

Have you tried reaching out to your local congressperson? Sometimes they can help push things through

Stay persistent and consider reaching out through multiple channels if possible to see if you can get a consistent answer.

While it seems like a daunting process to verify your identity with the IRS, there are steps you can take to potentially make it smoother. Firstly, ensure that you have all your documents ready, as being over-prepared can save time during the verification process. If you're experiencing trouble reaching an agent, try calling during off-peak hours, such as early morning or late afternoon. Additionally, if the waiting times get too lengthy, consider using tools like Claimyr, which for a fee, can connect you to an agent faster. Although this service comes with a cost, it has helped many people bypass the long queues. On the flip side, keep in mind that while these paid services are helpful, they highlight the need for improvements in the IRS's customer support infrastructure. The use of technology, such as online verification or secure digital identification, should be explored further by the IRS to streamline the process. When you do get through, be prepared for a series of questions to confirm your identity, and expect the call to take around 30 minutes if there are no complications. Above all, patience and persistence are key, as well as documenting all interactions for future reference.

Ugh, the IRS identity verification is a nightmare. I spent hours on hold only to get disconnected. It's like they don't want us to verify our identities π

Some people have had success using the IRS callback feature if available, so you donβt have to wait on hold.

Persistence really is key, but it's sad that it takes so many tries. Hopefully, the IRS improves soon.

I feel your pain! I was stuck in the same boat for weeks. Make sure you have your IRS notice and ALL identification docs ready. They'll ask for everything under the sun.

They definitely seem to want every piece of personal information, but it's better to be over-prepared than under-prepared!

It's probably about tightening security to prevent fraud, but the method needs to be less burdensome for honest taxpayers.

Friendly reminder to everyone: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Write down who you talked to, when, and what they said. It'll save you headaches later if theres any discrepancies.

Fr tho, the government needs to get with the times. Why can't we just use facial recognition or something?

Facial recognition could streamline the process, but it raises privacy concerns that need careful consideration first.
