IRS 971 Code Appeared on June 24 with $0 Amount - What Does This Notice Mean for My February-Filed Refund?
Been checking my transcript everyday and today I finally saw some movement but its just a 971 notice code dated for 06-25-2024 with a $0.00 amount. Anyone know what this means for my refund? Getting tired of checking WMR and calling the IRS just to get automated messages. When I look at my account transcript, I can see the following: 971 Notice issued 06-25-2024 $0.00 This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data It's showing as "Notice issued" on my transcript but with no dollar amount attached to it. The transcript is marked as containing sensitive taxpayer data, but I can't make sense of what this 971 notice actually means for my refund status. I filed back in February and was expecting a decent refund this year. I've been checking both "Where's My Refund" tool and my transcript almost daily, and this is the first change I've seen in weeks. No 846 refund issued code yet, just this 971 notice code. Does anyone know if this means they're sending me a letter? And if so, how long after this code appears will I actually receive something in the mail? Is this good news or bad news for my refund? Usually when I see movement on my transcript I get excited thinking my refund is coming, but now I'm just confused and worried.

The 971 notice code appearing on your transcript indicates that the IRS is sending you a formal communication to your address of record. Since it's dated June 24, 2024, you should expect this notice to arrive in your mailbox around that time. The $0.00 amount shown is typical for a 971 code, as it's simply a notification marker rather than a financial transaction. This particular notice could mean several things: - Identity verification request - Documentation needed for claimed deductions - Explanation of processing delays - Information about adjustments to your return - General status updates about your refund It's worth noting that a 971 code by itself doesn't necessarily indicate a problem with your return. However, to fully understand the implications, it would be helpful to see if there are any accompanying codes on your transcript, particularly codes like 570 (refund hold) or 420 (audit). These codes often appear together and tell a more complete story about your return's status. Keep monitoring your mail around the June 24 date, as the notice will provide specific details about what action, if any, you need to take regarding your return.

•Best to wait for the notice. Calling now won't help since the reps can't see what the notice is about until it's actually sent.

Hey guys, just wanted to share something that helped me. I was in the same boat with cryptic codes but I used taxr.ai and it explained everything. It costs $1 but totally worth it - gave me a clear timeline and explained all my transcript codes. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

The 971 code is basically the IRS saying "hey, we're sending you mail" - nothing more, nothing less. Since yours is dated 06-25-2024, you should be getting that letter any day now if you haven't already. The $0 amount is totally normal for this code. Here's what I'd suggest: stop obsessing over WMR and your transcript for a few days (I know, easier said than done 😅). Wait for that letter to arrive because it'll tell you exactly what they need or what's happening with your return. Could be anything from simple identity verification to requesting documentation for a deduction. Pro tip: once you get the letter, respond ASAP if they're asking for something. The sooner you send back what they need, the sooner your refund gets moving again. And yeah, the waiting sucks but at least you're seeing movement now!
