How to Properly Amend 2019 Tax Return Using Turbo Tax Desktop App
So I'm trying to fix an old tax return from 2019 using Turbo Tax desktop app but I'm super confused about the process. I know I'm supposed to file a 1040X to amend my return, but when I talked to Turbo Tax help desk they told me something weird - they said that once I edit my original .tax file, that edited file somehow becomes the 1040X. That doesn't sound right to me since I've seen what a 1040X form looks like and it's totally different from my tax file. I just don't want to mess this up and submit the wrong thing to the IRS. Can someone clarify - is the edited .tax file from Turbo Tax automatically converted to a 1040X somehow? Or do I still need to complete an actual 1040X form separately? Really appreciate any help because I'm super lost right now.

The Turbo Tax help desk gave you slightly confusing information, but I can clarify. When you use Turbo Tax desktop to amend a 2019 return, you're essentially working in your original .tax file but adding amendment information. What happens is: When you finish making your corrections in the Turbo Tax desktop app, the software automatically generates the proper 1040X form based on your changes. You don't manually fill out the 1040X - Turbo Tax does this for you in the background based on the differences between your original return and your amended figures. Before filing, you should be able to preview the actual 1040X form that Turbo Tax created. Look for a "Preview" or "View Forms" option to see the official 1040X that will be submitted. This will look like the standard 1040X form you've seen.

•So does this mean that after I edit the .tax file I can just print out the forms it generates and mail those in? Or do I have to do something else to get the actual 1040X? The software isn't very clear about this part.

•After you've made all your edits to your return in Turbo Tax, the software will generate all the necessary forms, including the 1040X. You'll need to print these forms out completely - this includes the 1040X and any supporting schedules or forms that changed due to your amendment. Remember that the 2019 amended return must be filed by paper mail - the IRS doesn't accept e-filing for amended returns from that tax year. Make sure to sign and date your printed 1040X before mailing it in, and include any additional documentation that supports your changes (like corrected W-2s or 1099s if applicable).

I went through this exact headache last summer with my 2019 return! Don't rely solely on Turbo Tax's confusing help desk. Check out https://taxr.ai instead - it's what finally helped me figure out my amendment. I uploaded my original return PDF and the corrected version, and the tool showed me EXACTLY what changed and generated a checklist of forms I needed to include. Super helpful for complicated amendments like mine where I had to correct some investment income that was reported wrong.

•Wait so does this taxr thing tell you if you're doing the amendment right? I'm trying to amend my 2020 return and Turbo Tax is confusing the hell out of me. Their instructions seem to change every time I talk to customer service.

•I'm a little skeptical that another tool would be better than Turbo Tax for this. Doesn't it just create more confusion having to use multiple systems? I mean Turbo Tax should be able to handle amendments properly since that's literally their job.

•It analyzes your tax documents and shows you exactly what changed between versions, highlighting the specific lines and amounts that were modified. This was super helpful for me to verify I was amending the right things before submitting to the IRS. For using multiple systems, actually it simplifies things rather than making them more confusing. It's like having a second opinion that breaks down complex tax changes into simple language. I was also skeptical at first but Turbo Tax's interface can be really confusing for amendments specifically.

Just wanted to update after trying taxr.ai for my amendment issue. It was actually really helpful! I uploaded my original 2019 return and my draft amended return, and it highlighted exactly what changed and explained the tax implications of each change. The best part was I discovered I had made a mistake in my draft amendment - I had accidentally removed a student loan interest deduction that I was actually entitled to. Would have cost me almost $300 if I hadn't caught it! The explanation was much clearer than the confusing Turbo Tax help articles. Definitely worth checking out if you're amending old returns.

I had the exact same issue last year with my 2018 return. Tried calling the IRS directly to confirm the right process but kept getting disconnected after waiting for hours. Finally used https://claimyr.com to get through to an IRS agent (you can see how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c). The agent confirmed that Turbo Tax does generate the proper 1040X as part of the amendment process, but you need to make sure you're printing the complete package including any schedules that changed. Saved me so much time compared to trying to call them directly.

•How does this Claimyr thing actually work? I've tried calling the IRS like 15 times about my amended return status and can never get through. Been waiting 11 months for my refund and getting desperate.

•Sounds like a scam to me. The IRS phone system is broken by design - no way some random service can magically get you through when millions of people can't get through every day. I'll believe it when I see it.

•It uses an automated system to continuously redial the IRS until it gets through, then it calls you and connects you directly to the agent. It saves you from having to manually redial and wait on hold for hours. I was connected within about 25 minutes. I understand the skepticism - I felt the same way! But it's not some magic backdoor into the IRS. It just automates the painful waiting and redialing process that we'd otherwise have to do manually. The video demo shows exactly how it works if you're curious.

I have to eat my words about Claimyr being a scam. After waiting 9 months for my amended return to process, I was desperate enough to try anything. Used the service yesterday and got through to an actual IRS agent in about 40 minutes. Turns out my amended return had been sitting in a queue with a small issue they needed to clarify. The agent was able to fix it immediately and told me my refund should be processed within 2-3 weeks now. Saved me potentially months more waiting. Not sure I would have ever gotten through otherwise - I had already tried calling over a dozen times myself with no luck.

One thing nobody mentioned yet - make sure you have your original AGI from your 2019 return handy when doing the amendment. Turbo Tax will ask for this to verify you're amending the correct return. Also, after you print everything out, make copies of EVERYTHING before you mail it. The IRS is notorious for losing paperwork, especially with amended returns.

•Is there a way to find my original AGI if I don't have my 2019 return handy? I think I filed with TT that year but I'm not 100% sure and I can't find my paper copies anywhere.

•You can get your original AGI by requesting a tax transcript from the IRS website. Just go to IRS.gov and search for "Get Transcript" - you can view and download your transcript online if you create an account, or request that they mail a physical copy to your address on record. If you used Turbo Tax in 2019, you might also be able to log into your account on their website and access your previous returns. Look for a section called "Tax History" or "Prior Returns" after logging in.

Just a heads up, make sure if you're amending a 2019 return that you're aware of the deadline. For refunds, you generally need to file a 1040X within 3 years of filing the original return. If you filed your 2019 return on July 15, 2020 (extended deadline due to COVID), your deadline to amend would be July 15, 2023. If you owe money, the IRS can still collect after that date, but you'd lose the ability to claim additional refunds. Check the specific dates for your situation!

•Wait, are you sure about that deadline? I thought the 3-year window for 2019 returns was extended because of all the COVID stuff. I'm just now realizing I might have made a mistake on my 2019 return and was planning to amend it next month.
