How to Fix Incorrect 1095-A for 2023 when I switched to employer insurance
I'm in a frustrating situation with my taxes this year and could use some advice. The IRS is expecting me to file a 1095-A from 2023, but there's a problem with it. I had Marketplace insurance in 2022, but switched to my employer's plan starting January 2023. The issue is that my Marketplace plan didn't get properly canceled, so they sent me a 1095-A for 2023 that shows January filled out and zeros for the rest of the year. I've already called the Marketplace to try to get them to retroactively change the cancellation date to 12/31/22, but they flat out refused. Here's the thing - I actually WASN'T on the Marketplace plan in January 2023. I have proof from my employer with a 1095-B showing I had coverage through them for all of 2023 including January. I'm stuck in tax filing limbo because of this. How can I get this corrected? Has anyone dealt with something similar? The IRS is expecting this form but the information is wrong, and the Marketplace won't fix it.

This is actually a fairly common issue when transitioning between Marketplace and employer insurance. What you're dealing with is a discrepancy between your actual coverage and what's being reported to the IRS. Since you have proof of employer coverage for January 2023 (the 1095-B), you can proceed with filing your taxes even with the incorrect 1095-A. The key is how you report this on your tax return. When you file, you'll need to complete Form 8962 (Premium Tax Credit), but you should only report the amounts you actually received as advance premium tax credits - which sounds like zero since you weren't actually using the Marketplace plan. If you're using tax software, there should be an option to indicate that the 1095-A information is incorrect. You can enter zero for the premium amounts and tax credits for January since you weren't actually on that plan. Keep all your documentation - both the incorrect 1095-A and your 1095-B showing employer coverage. If the IRS questions this later, you'll have proof that you had other coverage and weren't using the Marketplace plan.

•Thanks for this info! I have a similar situation but with a twist - my Marketplace plan showed coverage for February when I had already switched to my employer plan. Do I need to call the IRS directly or just file with the correct information like you suggested?

•You don't need to call the IRS directly. Instead, just file your taxes with the correct information as I mentioned. Complete Form 8962 accurately based on when you actually received advance premium tax credits, not what the incorrect 1095-A shows. For your situation with February coverage being incorrectly reported, you'd handle it the same way - report zero premium and tax credit for February on Form 8962 since you had employer coverage. Keep both your 1095-A and 1095-B as documentation in case there are any questions later.

I had a similar nightmare situation last year and found this amazing service that helped me sort through all my tax documents. Check out https://taxr.ai - they have document review specialists who can look at your 1095-A and 1095-B and give you specific guidance on how to file correctly. I uploaded both forms, explained my situation, and they provided step-by-step instructions on exactly how to handle the discrepancy in my tax filing. They specifically knew how to handle marketplace insurance transitions like yours.

•Does this service actually work with complicated healthcare form issues? My tax person is completely confused by my marketplace situation and I'm desperate for help before the filing deadline.

•I'm skeptical - how exactly do they help with the 1095-A corrections? Can they actually get the Marketplace to fix incorrect forms or do they just help you file with the wrong information?

•They absolutely work with complicated healthcare form issues. Their document specialists have extensive experience with marketplace transitions and similar situations. They won't just give generic advice - they'll review your specific forms and give you personalized guidance. They can't force the Marketplace to correct the forms, but they explain exactly how to properly file your taxes despite having incorrect 1095-A information. They'll show you how to complete Form 8962 correctly and what documentation to keep in case of questions later. Way more helpful than my regular tax preparer was with this specific issue.

Just wanted to follow up - I actually tried taxr.ai for my healthcare form nightmare and it was incredibly helpful! I uploaded my confusing marketplace forms (had a similar issue with coverage dates being wrong) and got detailed instructions within hours. They walked me through exactly what to put on each line of Form 8962 and explained what documentation I needed to keep. They even created a custom explanation letter I could include with my filing to explain the discrepancy. Definitely worth checking out if you're dealing with this marketplace insurance headache.

When I was dealing with Marketplace form issues, I spent literally WEEKS trying to get through to someone who could help. After countless failed attempts calling the marketplace and IRS, I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at the IRS in under 15 minutes. You can check it out at https://claimyr.com and see how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - it was a game changer for me. The IRS agent actually gave me specific instructions on how to file with an incorrect 1095-A and what documentation I needed to include. So much better than waiting on hold for hours!

•How does this service actually work? I'm confused - does it just call the IRS for you or what? I've been trying to get through to a human for days.

•Yeah right... nothing can get you through to the IRS that quickly. I've been trying for MONTHS with no luck. Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•It doesn't call for you - it basically navigates the IRS phone tree and holds your place in line, then calls you once an agent is about to pick up. That way you don't have to sit listening to hold music for hours. It absolutely works that quickly. I was skeptical too after spending days trying to get through myself. The service monitors the IRS phone lines and uses an algorithm to connect at optimal times. They have some kind of technology that navigates the complicated phone menus and waits on hold for you, then calls you when a human agent is about to answer. Totally changed my perspective on dealing with the IRS.

Ok I need to eat my words from my previous comment. After another failed attempt to reach the IRS yesterday (2+ hours on hold before getting disconnected), I broke down and tried Claimyr. I was connected to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes and they actually helped me resolve my 1095-A issue. The agent explained that this happens frequently when transitioning from Marketplace to employer coverage and gave me specific instructions to file Form 8962 with zeroes for the premium amounts in the months I had employer coverage, along with attaching an explanation letter and copies of both my incorrect 1095-A and correct 1095-B. Already finished my taxes today after being stuck for weeks!

Have you tried requesting a corrected 1095-A directly through your Marketplace account online? Sometimes the phone representatives aren't helpful, but I was able to submit a correction request through the online portal last year and got a fixed form within 2 weeks.

•I didn't know there was an online option for corrections! I only tried calling. Where exactly did you find this in your Marketplace account? I've been looking around but don't see anything about corrections.

•Log into your Marketplace account and go to your application details. There should be a section called "Tax Forms" or something similar where your 1095-A is listed. Near that form, there should be an option for "Report a Problem" or "Request a Correction." If you can't find it, try going to the help section and search for "1095-A correction." Some state marketplaces have different layouts, but they all should have some way to request corrections online.

Quick question for anyone who's been through this - if I go ahead and file with the documentation showing both forms (incorrect 1095-A and correct 1095-B), will this trigger an audit? I'm nervous about drawing attention to my return.

•Not likely to trigger an audit from my experience. I had this exact issue two years ago. I filed with both forms and included a brief explanation letter. Never heard anything from the IRS about it. This happens way more often than you'd think.

I went through this exact same situation last year! The key thing to understand is that you don't actually need the Marketplace to fix the 1095-A to file your taxes correctly. Since you have your 1095-B showing employer coverage for all of 2023, you can file with confidence. Here's what I did: I completed Form 8962 but entered zero for any months where I actually had employer coverage (even though the 1095-A showed otherwise). The IRS computer systems will match up your forms eventually, and having both the incorrect 1095-A and correct 1095-B as documentation protects you. I also wrote a simple explanation letter that I attached to my return explaining the coverage transition and why the 1095-A was incorrect. Something like: "The enclosed 1095-A shows coverage for January 2023, however I had employer-sponsored coverage through [employer name] for the entire year as documented by the enclosed 1095-B. No advance premium tax credits were received for 2023." Filed electronically with no issues and never heard back from the IRS about it. Don't let this incorrect form hold up your filing - you have all the documentation you need to file accurately!
