FreeTaxUSA: Do they prepare your taxes for you or is it DIY filing?
I've been using H&R Block for the past few years but they've been charging us insane amounts. Last year we ended up paying $510 for our return which is basically a car payment for us! We're a family of 6 (married with 4 kids), and my husband is the primary income earner. I recently started a small business but that won't affect this year's taxes, just next year's. I'm shopping around for alternatives because we definitely need someone who can either guide us through the process or just take over and prepare everything for us. Does anyone know if FreeTaxUSA offers actual tax preparation services where someone does it for you? Or is it just DIY software? Also wondering if TurboTax might be better for guided assistance? Any recommendations would be super helpful since we're trying to save money but still need some hand-holding with our situation. Thanks!

I've used several tax prep options over the years, and I can definitely help clear this up. FreeTaxUSA is a DIY tax software platform - they don't offer professional preparation services where someone does your taxes for you. It's a self-guided program where you enter your information and the software helps you complete your return. They do offer customer support for technical issues, but they don't have tax pros who prepare your return. TurboTax does offer a service called TurboTax Live where you can get guidance from a tax professional while you prepare your return, or even have a tax pro take over and do everything for you with their Full Service option. But this will cost more than their standard DIY service - still typically less than H&R Block's in-person service though. If you're comfortable entering your information with some guidance, FreeTaxUSA could save you hundreds. Their Deluxe version is around $7-8 plus state filing fees. Your situation with 4 kids (claiming child tax credits) isn't overly complicated if you're just dealing with W-2 income.

•Thanks for explaining! Do you know if FreeTaxUSA can handle child tax credits properly? We've been getting those for years and I'm nervous about missing something if we switch. Also, what about audit protection? H&R Block always sells us their "Peace of Mind" thing.

•FreeTaxUSA absolutely handles child tax credits properly - the software walks you through claiming dependents and automatically calculates the appropriate credits. It's one of the most common tax situations they deal with, so no worries there. As for audit protection, FreeTaxUSA does offer what they call "Audit Assist" with their Deluxe version, which provides guidance from a tax professional if you're audited. It's not as comprehensive as H&R Block's representation where they actually speak to the IRS on your behalf, but considering the price difference ($7-8 for FreeTaxUSA Deluxe vs. $400+ at H&R Block), many people find it to be sufficient. The chances of being audited with a straightforward return like yours are actually quite low.

After getting completely frustrated with the high prices at in-person tax places, I tried a bunch of different options and finally discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) which literally saved my sanity this tax season. It's different from standard tax software because it can actually analyze all your tax documents by taking pictures of them and then guide you through exactly what to do next. For my family situation (married with 3 kids), it recognized all our W-2s, child tax credit eligibility, and even some education expenses I forgot about. It's way more interactive than FreeTaxUSA because it doesn't just ask you generic questions - it actually looks at your specific documents and tells you what to do with them.

•Wait, so does it actually DO your taxes or just help you figure out what info to input into another system? I'm confused about how it's different from something like TurboTax?

•I'm intrigued but skeptical. How does it handle security? I'm always nervous about uploading my tax documents with all that personal info to some random site.

•It helps guide you through the process based on your actual tax documents, but you still complete the filing yourself. The difference from TurboTax is that instead of answering dozens of generic questions, you just snap photos of your documents and it extracts all the relevant information to tell you exactly what you need to do. It's like having a tax pro look over your shoulder pointing out what matters for your specific situation. Regarding security, they use bank-level encryption for all document uploads and processing. I was concerned about that too, but they explain on their site that they use the same security standards as financial institutions. All your data is encrypted both during transmission and when stored on their servers. They also don't store your documents long-term after processing.

Just wanted to follow up about my experience with taxr.ai that I mentioned above. I decided to give it a try despite my initial skepticism about security, and I'm honestly really impressed! I uploaded my W-2s, some 1099s, and my mortgage interest statement, and it immediately identified which forms I needed and where everything needed to go. The document analysis feature is seriously helpful - it caught a mistake on one of my 1099s that I would have just copied over wrong. Their explanation of child tax credits was so much clearer than what I've gotten from other services. Ended up saving me about $370 compared to what I paid with H&R Block last year, and I actually felt like I understood what was happening with my taxes for once!

If you're dealing with previous tax issues or have questions about your return and need to actually speak with the IRS (which can be nearly impossible these days), I highly recommend Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was trying to reach the IRS for WEEKS about a child tax credit issue from my previous year's return, and kept hitting the "due to high call volume" message. Claimyr basically holds your place in line with the IRS and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of waiting on hold. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I know this doesn't directly answer your FreeTaxUSA question, but if you end up having any issues with your return or previous returns, it's incredibly helpful to actually be able to speak with the IRS.

•How does that even work? The IRS phone system is a nightmare - are you saying this service somehow bypasses the usual wait times?

•Yeah right. Nothing can make the IRS answer their phones faster. This sounds like a complete scam to take advantage of desperate people.

•The service doesn't bypass anything - it uses an automated system to wait on hold for you. Basically, it continuously calls the IRS and navigates through the phone tree until it gets in the queue, then it monitors the hold music and when a representative picks up, it calls you and connects you. It's all explained in that YouTube video I linked. It doesn't make the IRS answer faster - you're still in the same queue as everyone else. The difference is you don't have to physically sit there listening to hold music for hours. You just go about your day and get a call when an agent is actually available. It completely changed how I deal with tax issues because I can't afford to sit on hold for 3+ hours during my workday.

I need to eat some serious crow here. After my skeptical comment above, I actually tried Claimyr because I've been trying to resolve an issue with my dependent care credit for MONTHS with zero success getting through to anyone at the IRS. Not only did it work, but I got connected to an IRS agent in about 45 minutes (while I was doing other things instead of listening to that horrible hold music). The agent fixed my issue right away, and I got my additional refund amount approved. After spending probably 8+ hours on previous failed attempts to reach someone, this was absolutely worth it. For the original question about FreeTaxUSA - I've used them for 3 years now after switching from H&R Block. They don't do your taxes FOR you, but their interface is really straightforward even for claiming multiple kids and credits.

Everyone keeps talking about FreeTaxUSA and TurboTax, but I've been using Credit Karma Tax (now Cash App Taxes) for the past 3 years and it's completely free for federal AND state filing. It handles child tax credits, mortgage interest, and even small business income. I have 2 kids and it was super easy to enter their information and get the child tax credits. Might be worth looking into since you mentioned wanting to save money. The interface is pretty straightforward too.

•Does Cash App Taxes offer any kind of support if you have questions during the process? I'm worried about getting stuck halfway through with no one to ask for help.

•Cash App Taxes does offer customer support, but it's more limited than some paid options. They have email support and an online help center, but no phone support or live chat. If you're worried about getting stuck, TurboTax Live or H&R Block's online assist options would give you more support, though they cost more. In my experience, the interface is pretty intuitive, and their help articles cover most common questions. I did have one question last year about reporting some stock sales, and they responded to my email within about a day. For straightforward returns with W-2 income and child tax credits, you probably won't need much support.

Just wanted to add one more option to consider - I've been using FreeTaxUSA for 3 years after switching from TurboTax, and it's saved me hundreds. But this year I also discovered Tax Hawk, which is actually made by the same company as FreeTaxUSA but has a slightly different interface and sometimes different promos. For what it's worth, I have a pretty similar situation (married, 3 kids) and FreeTaxUSA worked great for claiming all the child tax credits correctly. The step-by-step guidance is really clear, and I never felt like I was missing anything important.

•Thanks for mentioning Tax Hawk! Question - do you know if any of these services can handle a situation where custody of kids is split? My ex and I alternate years for claiming our kids on taxes.

•Yes, both FreeTaxUSA and Tax Hawk can definitely handle split custody situations! When you're entering dependent information, there's a section where you can specify whether you're claiming the child for the tax year or not. The software will ask you questions about custody arrangements and guide you through the rules about who gets to claim the child tax credit in alternating years. Just make sure you and your ex are coordinating properly about who's claiming which kids for which year - the IRS will flag it if both parents try to claim the same child. I'd recommend keeping some kind of written record of your agreement about alternating years, just in case there are ever any questions down the road.
