TurboTax Error: Iowa State Tax Form Shows 2025 Availability Date - Should I Wait or File Another Way?

Filed my federal return already but getting errors when trying to submit Iowa state taxes through TurboTax. When trying to continue with my state return, I'm seeing a message that says "Your state return isn't ready just yet. We're making some updates due to tax law changes and will email you as soon as everything's ready. For now, we can still help you file your federal return." The message also shows that these changes affect the "Iowa Individual Forms" specifically the "Form IA 1040 Individual Income Tax Long Form" which appears to have an availability date of 01/23/2025. I'm confused because that date has already passed (it's now after January 23rd). There are also options asking "How do these updates affect me?" and "Should I e-file or file my return by mail?" but I'm not sure what to do with these. Anyone know if I need to wait for TurboTax to fully update their system, or if I need to wait for the IRS to fully process my federal return first? Is there another way to file my Iowa state taxes? I'm starting to get worried about deadlines since I've already filed federal but can't seem to submit the state portion through the app. Should I try a different service or paper filing instead?

Tax pro here - You don't need to wait for federal processing to complete before filing state returns. The error you're getting is likely due to a mismatch between your federal AGI and what Iowa's system is expecting. Double check those numbers first.

thx for the quick reply! where exactly do I find the AGI numbers to compare?

Check line 11 on your 1040 federal form - that's your AGI. Make sure it matches exactly what you input on your Iowa return

Hey guys just wanted to mention theres this new tool called taxr.ai that can help figure out these kind of issues. It costs $4.99 but its saved me so much time and headache with both federal and state filing problems. You can upload your transcript and it tells you exactly whats wrong https://taxr.ai

that sounds interesting! does it work for state returns too or just federal?

It mainly analyzes federal transcripts but it can help identify issues that might affect your state return too. The AI is pretty smart about connecting the dots 🤓

Have you tried calling the Iowa DOR? Their wait times are way better than the IRS usually lol
