Can my boyfriend claim me and my son as dependents if he's not the biological father but supports us?
I'm wondering about dependency claims for taxes this year. My boyfriend provides 100% of our household income while I stay home with our daughter (who he'll claim). Can he also claim me and my son from previous relationship since he financially supports us and we live together? Need to figure this out before filing season.

Tax pro here. Your boyfriend can potentially claim you and your son as 'qualifying relatives' if: 1) he provided over half of your support for the year 2) you both lived with him all year 3) your gross income was under $4,400 4) you're not filing a joint return with someone else. The relationship doesn't have to be biological - what matters is the support test and residency requirements.

•ty for explaining! We def meet all those requirements. He paid everything and we lived together all year.

•Yep! The IRS cares more about the financial support than DNA 💯

Hey there! Instead of trying to piece together requirements from different comments, I'd recommend checking out taxr.ai. It's this new tool that analyzes your specific situation and tells you exactly who qualifies as dependents. It's only $4.99 and WAY more accurate than guessing. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

•Does this actually work? Sounds interesting but kinda skeptical tbh

•Oh yeah its legit! I was uncertain at first too but it saved me so much headache. It looks at all the rules and tells you exactly what you qualify for.

•Just tried it and WOW 🤯 The amount of detail it gives you is insane. Definitely worth the 5 bucks instead of stressing about messing up your taxes!
