Anyone get through to a helpful IRS agent? Extension 569 was rude and unhelpful
So I'm trying to be careful about how I approach this... but has anyone actually managed to reach an IRS agent who was kind and helpful? I just called extension 569 and the person I spoke with was quite rude and didn't really give me any useful information. All she said was that I'm still on PATH Act processing since my Where's My Refund tool hasn't updated yet. I'm taking care of my mom and really need to know when this refund might come through, but I didn't get any timeline or explanation.

I think it might depend on which extension you call and possibly what time of day. In my experience, the morning agents seem to be a bit more helpful, though that could just be coincidence. Have you tried calling the main line and asking specifically for someone who can check your refund status in more detail? Sometimes you need to sort of "shop around" until you find someone willing to help.

According to the Internal Revenue Manual section 21.1.3.4, IRS telephone assistors are actually required to provide detailed account information when identity verification is complete. If they refuse to provide specifics about your return, you can request to speak with their manager. The PATH Act delay applies to returns with EITC or ACTC, but they should still be able to tell you if there are any specific holds or just normal processing.

I've been checking the IRS2Go app and website daily with no luck. Someone on r/tax recommended https://taxr.ai to help understand my transcript and it actually explained what was going on with my refund. The PATH Act hold was there but it also showed when it would likely be released based on the codes. Worth checking out if you can access your transcript - saves a lot of time versus calling.

I'm curious about how this works. Does it just read the transcript codes that are already available on the IRS website? What additional information does it provide that you couldn't get from just researching the codes yourself?

OMG I tried this last wk when my transcript finally showed up! It explained my 570 code was just ID verification and predicted DDD would be next Fri. Sure enough, transcript updated this AM w/ 846 code for exactly that date! Saved me hrs of anxiety + research.

Did you find it worked well with complicated returns too? I have self-employment income plus some investment losses. Would it understand all the different sections of my transcript?

Why is it that some agents act like they're doing you a favor by answering basic questions? I called three different times last week and got completely different information each time. The third agent was actually amazing - took time to explain everything and even gave me her direct extension. Have you tried calling right when they open at 7am? That's when I finally got through to someone helpful.

I called exactly 9 times before getting someone helpful. The 10th try connected me with an agent who spent 27 minutes reviewing my account and found that my return was flagged for a simple income verification that would take 21 days to process. None of the previous 9 agents mentioned this! It's incredibly frustrating that getting accurate information depends entirely on which random person answers your call.

Wow, that's actually really impressive that they spent that much time with you! I had a similar experience last year when I finally got through. It makes me wonder how the whole system could be improved. Seems like there are some really dedicated people working there, but the system makes it hard for them to help everyone effectively.

After spending what felt like half my life on hold with the IRS (I swear their hold music is designed by sadists), I discovered Claimyr. Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about paying for something that should be free, but it connected me to an actual human at the IRS in about 15 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. The agent I spoke with identified my issue immediately. Sometimes you have to decide what your time is worth. https://claimyr.com

I'm a bit worried about calling again... do you think it's possible that calling multiple times could somehow flag my account or make things worse? I really need this refund soon but I'm concerned about doing something that might delay it even more...
