What to do if unemployment runs out in California EDD - options and next steps

I've been on regular UI for about five months now and I can see the end coming. My benefit year wraps up next month and I still haven't landed anything solid. Had a few interviews go nowhere, been religiously filing my weekly claims and logging my job search activities on CalJOBS, but the job market in my field (marketing coordinator) has been brutal lately. I got laid off from a mid-size company back in January and honestly thought I'd have something new by now. I'm genuinely starting to panic about what happens when California EDD stops the payments. Does anyone actually know what your options are when regular unemployment runs out? Is there any kind of extension available right now in 2025? What about federal programs or anything else through California EDD? I don't even know where to start figuring this out and the EDD website is honestly confusing to navigate when you're trying to find info about what comes after UI.

So first thing you should know - as of 2025 there are no federal extended benefit programs active in California right now. The Extended Benefits (EB) program only kicks in automatically when the state unemployment rate hits a certain trigger threshold, and California hasn't hit that trigger recently. So unfortunately there's no automatic extension you can just apply for once your regular UI runs out. What you CAN do: 1) Check whether your benefit year has actually ended vs. whether you've exhausted your maximum benefit amount - these are two different things and people confuse them constantly. If your benefit year ends but you still had a balance, you may be able to refile a new claim if you've worked enough in the new base period. 2) Look into whether you qualify for any California state programs like CalWORKs if you have dependents, or Medi-Cal for healthcare. 3) Contact your local America's Job Center of California (AJCC) - they sometimes have retraining funds and resources people don't know about. 4) If you worked any gigs or part-time during your claim period, double check your wages were properly reported because sometimes that affects your base period calculation for a new claim.

Wait so the benefit year ending vs exhausting the balance are different things? I always thought they were the same. Can you explain that more? Because my letter says my benefit year ends June 30th but I'm not sure if I've used all my benefits yet.

0 coins

Yes they're totally different! Your benefit year is a 12-month window during which you can collect. Your maximum benefit amount is the total dollar amount you can receive. If your benefit year ends June 30th and you still have a balance left, that balance disappears - you can't use it after the benefit year closes. But if you've earned enough wages in a new base period (usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters), you might qualify to file a fresh new claim with a new benefit year starting. Log into UI Online and look at your claim details to see both your benefit year end date AND your remaining balance.

0 coins

this is actually really helpful info. i had no idea about the benefit year vs balance thing and i'm in a similar boat as OP

0 coins

Honestly the most important thing nobody tells you is to file your new claim as soon as your benefit year ends - don't wait a single day. California EDD processes these on a first come first served basis and even a week's delay can push your first payment back significantly. Also make sure your address and bank info are current in UI Online before your year ends so there's no hiccup when the new claim processes.

0 coins

Good call on the bank info - I actually changed banks two months ago and I'm not sure I updated it. Going to check right now.

0 coins

THIS. I waited like two weeks after my benefit year ended thinking I should give it some time and it ended up causing a 6 week delay in getting my new claim approved. File immediately.

0 coins

does filing a new claim automatically cancel any remaining balance from the old claim or do they run parallel somehow

0 coins

When I was in your exact situation last year I had a really hard time getting through to California EDD to ask about my options. Kept calling and hitting busy signals or getting disconnected after waiting forever. Someone on a Facebook group mentioned Claimyr and I was pretty skeptical at first but I tried it and actually got connected to a live EDD agent within a couple hours. They were able to look at my account and tell me exactly whether I qualified for a new claim based on my wages. The site is claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - when your unemployment is running out and you need real answers about YOUR specific situation, being able to actually talk to someone at EDD is worth a lot.

0 coins

I've been avoiding calling EDD because every time I try I just get the busy signal and hang up. Maybe I'll try this - I really do need someone to look at my actual account and tell me if I qualify for a new claim.

0 coins

claimyr actually worked for me too when I needed to talk to someone about my adjudication issue. Definitely not a scam if that's what you're worried about

0 coins

gonna look into this because I have been calling EDD for TWO WEEKS straight and cannot get a single human being on the line

0 coins

One thing that often gets overlooked when unemployment runs out: check if you qualify to refile based on any part-time or temporary work you did during your benefit year. A lot of people work small gigs while collecting UI (and report it correctly on their weekly certifications as they should). Those earnings might be enough to establish a new base period and qualify you for a fresh claim. Even earning like $1,500-2,000 in part time work over the course of your claim might be enough to requalify depending on the quarter breakdowns. California EDD uses the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters as the standard base period, but if you don't qualify with that, they'll check an alternate base period using your most recent four completed quarters. So definitely don't assume you don't qualify without actually filing and letting EDD calculate it.

0 coins

I did some freelance work during my claim and reported everything - maybe that counts? I probably earned around $2,800 total over four months doing small projects.

0 coins

That $2,800 could definitely matter depending on how it's distributed across quarters. The rule is you need to have earned at least $1,300 in your highest quarter, OR have earned at least $900 in your highest quarter AND your total base period wages are at least 1.25 times your high quarter wages. File the new claim and let EDD's system calculate it - worst they can say is you don't qualify.

0 coins

Correct on the base period wages. Also worth noting - wages are credited to the quarter in which they were EARNED, not when they were paid. For freelance this sometimes gets tricky if a client paid late.

0 coins

what about disability? like if you're job searching but also dealing with health stuff can you switch from unemployment to SDI

0 coins

Yes you can switch from UI to California SDI (State Disability Insurance) if you have a medical condition preventing you from working, but you can't collect both simultaneously. If you're certifying for UI you're certifying that you're able and available to work - if that's not true because of a health issue, SDI would be the appropriate program. Talk to your doctor about certification.

0 coins

ok thanks that makes sense. i wasn't sure if it was one or the other or if you could do both

0 coins

I'm in full panic mode reading this thread because I'm literally two weeks away from my benefit year ending and I have NO idea if I'll qualify for a new claim. I've been so focused on job searching that I haven't even thought about what happens next. Does California EDD automatically check if you qualify for a new claim or do you HAVE to file a new application? Because I don't want to miss some window and end up with nothing.

0 coins

You absolutely have to file a new application - California EDD does NOT automatically start a new claim for you. Nothing is automatic. Log into UI Online and file a new claim as soon as your current benefit year ends. Set a reminder on your phone.

0 coins

Setting a reminder right now oh my god. Why doesn't EDD just send a notice or something reminding you to refile?? This is such an easy thing they could do.

0 coins

They actually do send a notice but it goes to the address on file and half the time arrives after the benefit year already ended lol. Check UI Online don't wait for mail.

0 coins

Also pro tip - you can actually check UI Online a few days before your benefit year ends to see if your new claim is already in the system. Sometimes EDD pre-processes renewals when they can see your benefit year is ending.

0 coins

California EDD NEVER sends notices on time I swear. I found out my benefit year ended because payments just STOPPED with zero warning. Had to scramble to figure out what happened. The whole system is designed to trip you up.

0 coins

This is exactly what I'm afraid of happening to me omg

0 coins

Just check UI Online every single day leading up to your end date. That's all you can do because you definitely cannot rely on EDD to communicate with you proactively about anything.

0 coins

same experience here. found out via a stopped payment not a notice. infuriating

0 coins

Quick question for the thread - if you refile a new claim and you're placed in adjudication on the new claim, do you get any backpay for the weeks you were waiting while in adjudication? I ask because I'm about to refile and I know my employment history might trigger a review.

0 coins

Yes - if your new claim gets approved after adjudication, you should receive backpay for all the certified weeks going back to your claim effective date, as long as you filed your weekly certifications on time even while in adjudication. Never stop certifying even if your claim is under review.

0 coins

Okay that's a relief. So I should file the new claim, start certifying weekly immediately, and just keep certifying even if the claim status shows pending?

0 coins

Exactly right. And keep your job search log current too - you still need to be meeting the 3 employer contacts per week requirement during adjudication. If you get approved and they ask for job search records, you need to have them.

0 coins

For anyone whose benefits are about to run out and you're trying desperately to get through to EDD - I finally got through after weeks of failed attempts using Claimyr. I was in the exact same boat as OP, benefit year ending soon and needed to ask specific questions about my situation. The regular phone lines were impossible. Claimyr got me connected to an actual EDD agent who pulled up my account and walked me through exactly what my options were. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they also have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows the whole process. Genuinely saved me a lot of stress at an already stressful time.

0 coins

How long did it take to get connected through Claimyr? Like same day or did you have to wait until the next day?

0 coins

I got a callback with an EDD agent the same day I signed up, within a few hours. I was honestly shocked because I had basically given up on ever talking to a real person at EDD.

0 coins

bookmarking this for when I inevitably need it

0 coins

Does anyone know if the CalJOBS job search requirement changes at all when you're transitioning between claim periods? Like do you have to re-register with CalJOBS for a new claim or does your old registration carry over?

0 coins

Your CalJOBS registration carries over - you don't need to re-register. But you may want to log in and update your resume and job seeker profile since some offices check whether your profile is current when you file a new claim. Keeping your CalJOBS profile active and updated is just good practice throughout your job search anyway.

0 coins

Good to know, thanks. I kind of abandoned my CalJOBS profile after the first month because it felt redundant with everything else I was doing for job searching.

0 coins

Something worth knowing about requalifying for UI: if you did ANY work for an employer during your benefit year - even a short term contract or temp assignment - make sure you request your wage records from California EDD before you file the new claim. Sometimes employers report wages late or incorrectly and it can screw up your base period calculation. You can request your wage records through UI Online or by calling EDD. I found out an employer had reported about $3,000 of my wages to the wrong quarter and it would have made me ineligible for a new claim if I hadn't caught it.

0 coins

I didn't know you could request your wage records! That's really useful to know especially since I did some freelance work and I'm not 100% sure how the clients reported it.

0 coins

Yes go to UI Online, look under the account management section. You can see what wages EDD has on record for you. It's worth checking before you file so you're not surprised.

0 coins

This is great advice. I'd also add - if you find an error in your wage records, contact California EDD BEFORE your benefit year ends to get it corrected. Trying to fix wage record issues AFTER you've filed a new claim and been denied is a much bigger headache.

0 coins

genuine question - when unemployment runs out completely and you're not eligible for a new claim, what are the actual options? like what do people actually do

0 coins

Practically speaking the options are: apply for any other benefits you might qualify for (CalFresh food assistance, Medi-Cal, CalWORKs if you have kids), contact your local AJCC which sometimes has emergency assistance funds and job training programs, reach out to local nonprofits and community organizations that offer emergency financial assistance, contact your landlord and utility companies proactively - many have hardship programs, and of course keep job searching aggressively. It's a hard situation with no perfect answer.

0 coins

CalFresh is something I've been avoiding applying for because of the stigma I guess but maybe it's time to just do it. It's there for situations like this right

0 coins

Absolutely what it's there for. No shame in using programs that exist specifically for difficult periods. CalFresh applications can be done online at benefitscal.com and if you've been receiving UI you may already be close to the income threshold for eligibility.

0 coins

been lurking this thread and want to share - I went through this exact situation 8 months ago. Benefit year ended, didn't qualify for new claim, genuinely didn't know what to do. The America's Job Centers were actually more helpful than I expected - got connected to a retraining program through them that paid a small stipend while I completed a certification course. Not a lot of money but something. Worth looking into if you're in a field where an additional credential might help your job search.

0 coins

What kind of certification program was it if you don't mind sharing? I've been wondering if I should add to my credentials while I have the time.

0 coins

It was a digital marketing certification through a community college, covered through workforce development funds. The AJCC counselor identified it as a fit for my background. They have a whole catalog of approved programs, it really depends on your field and career goals.

0 coins

That's actually really encouraging. Marketing is my background too so this feels very relevant. Going to contact my local AJCC next week.

0 coins

does anyone know if getting a part time job while your claim is active messes up your ability to refile after? like if you take something part time to bridge the gap

0 coins

Part time work doesn't mess up your ability to refile - in fact as discussed upthread, those wages may actually HELP you qualify for a new claim by adding to your base period wages. The key is to report all earnings correctly on your weekly certifications. If you earn wages while on UI and report them, EDD reduces your weekly benefit amount accordingly, but it doesn't disqualify you. The problem only arises if you fail to report earnings.

0 coins

okay good because i was considering taking a part time retail job but was scared it would cause some kind of problem with my claim

0 coins

Take the part time job. Report the earnings each week on your certification. You'll still get partial UI benefits to make up some of the difference and you'll be building your base period wages for a potential new claim. Win win.

0 coins

I've been trying to reach California EDD for three weeks now about my situation which is similar to OP - my benefit year ends soon and I have questions about whether I'll qualify for a new claim based on some complicated employment stuff. Phone calls go nowhere, I submitted a contact form and got an auto reply, sent a message through UI Online and nothing. Just total radio silence from EDD while the clock keeps ticking. So frustrated.

0 coins

This is literally why I ended up trying Claimyr - same situation, couldn't get anyone at EDD to respond through any normal channel. Claimyr connects you directly to an EDD phone agent. I know it sounds too good to be true when you've been hitting walls for weeks but it actually works. claimyr.com has more info and there's a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10

0 coins

Honestly at this point I'll try anything. Going to check it out tonight. The stress of not being able to get answers while my benefit year is ending is genuinely affecting my mental health.

0 coins

The EDD contact form is basically a black hole in my experience. Don't wait for a response to that. Try every channel simultaneously and Claimyr if you need to escalate.

0 coins

Update for anyone following - I finally logged into UI Online and checked my actual numbers. My benefit year ends in 19 days and I have $847 left on my balance. So I'm going to lose that $847 when the benefit year closes. That's painful. And then I need to file a new claim immediately after. I don't think I'll qualify based on my wages during the benefit year but I'm going to file anyway like the thread suggested and let EDD calculate it.

0 coins

Sorry about that $847 - unfortunately yes, remaining balances don't carry over. On the bright side, filing even when you're unsure is the right move. A lot of people don't qualify under the standard base period but DO qualify under the alternate base period because of how their wages fall across quarters. EDD checks both automatically when you file.

0 coins

I didn't know they check both automatically - that's reassuring. At least I don't have to know which one applies, I just have to file.

0 coins

Exactly - just file and let the system work. The worst outcome is a denial, and even a denial gives you the right to appeal if you think the wage calculation was wrong.

0 coins

One more thing I want to add that helped me when I was in this situation: your local county social services office (not EDD specifically) can often give you a comprehensive picture of ALL benefits you might qualify for at once - CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWORKs, General Assistance, etc. They have eligibility workers whose literal job is to help you figure out what you qualify for. EDD only handles unemployment - the county handles everything else and they're often more accessible than EDD.

0 coins

I didn't realize county social services could give you like an overview of everything. I've been going program by program trying to figure stuff out separately. That sounds way more efficient.

0 coins

Yes! They call it a multi-benefit application in some counties. One appointment, one worker, they screen you for everything at once. Look up your county's DPSS or HSA office - different counties have different names for the same agency.

0 coins

This is genuinely one of the most useful things in this thread. Thank you.

0 coins

Filed my new claim today - benefit year ended yesterday. The UI Online system accepted the application and it's showing as pending. Already submitted my first weekly certification too even though it's technically in pending status. Going to keep certifying every week no matter what the status shows, per the advice in this thread. Will update when I hear something.

0 coins

You did everything right. Keep certifying weekly without fail, keep your job search log updated with your 3 employer contacts per week, and try not to refresh UI Online obsessively even though it's tempting.

0 coins

The refreshing obsessively part is going to be the hardest part honestly

0 coins

haha we've all been there. Set yourself a rule like only check it once per day otherwise you'll drive yourself crazy

0 coins

UPDATE: So I took a lot of advice from this thread. Checked my wage records in UI Online and found everything looked correct. I have 24 days left on my benefit year. I set a calendar reminder to file a new claim the day after my benefit year ends. In the meantime I'm calling my local AJCC to ask about retraining programs. And I have an actual marketing coordinator interview next week so fingers crossed this all becomes moot. Thank you to everyone who responded - this thread genuinely calmed me down and gave me concrete next steps instead of just spiraling.

0 coins

Good luck on the interview! And solid plan regardless of outcome. You've got the steps laid out and you're not going to get caught flat-footed.

0 coins

That's exactly what I needed - to not feel like I was just waiting for disaster with no plan. Having the steps makes a huge difference mentally.

0 coins

Rooting for you on the interview. Either way you're prepared now which is the best position to be in.

0 coins

good luck!! update us either way
