Back to California Unemployment

Jackie Martinez

How much is unemployment per week with California EDD in 2025?

So I got laid off from my warehouse job about two weeks ago and finally submitted my California EDD claim. My base period earnings were pretty inconsistent though - some quarters I was pulling decent hours and others not so much. I keep trying to figure out how much is unemployment per week that I'd actually receive but I can't get a straight answer anywhere. The EDD website has that benefits calculator but honestly it's confusing me more than helping. I made roughly $52,000 over my highest earning quarter and then dropped significantly after that. Does anyone know how EDD actually calculates the weekly benefit amount? Like is it just based on your highest quarter or does it factor in all four quarters? I'm trying to figure out if what I get will actually cover rent while I'm job searching.

The weekly benefit amount in California is calculated using your highest earning quarter during your base period. EDD takes roughly 60-70% of what you were earning weekly during that highest quarter. For 2025 the maximum weekly benefit amount is $450. So if your highest quarter was $52k that math won't quite work since the max caps at $450/week regardless of how high your earnings were.

0 coins

Wait so even if I earned way more than that the absolute max I can get is $450 a week? That seems really low for California honestly

0 coins

yeah the max has been stuck at $450 forever it feels like. haven't raised it in years which is frustrating given how expensive everything is here

0 coins

To add a little more detail - the actual formula is they take your highest base period quarter wages and divide by 26 to get your weekly benefit amount. If that number falls between $100 and $450 that's what you get. So for example if your highest quarter was $30,000 then $30,000 divided by 26 = roughly $1,153 weekly wages, then about 60% of that gives you your WBA. The EDD benefits calculator on their site should do this automatically if you enter the right quarterly wages.

0 coins

I went through this exact same confusion when I got laid off from my retail management job last spring. The short version is you can estimate your payment using the EDD UI Online benefit calculator but those numbers are only estimates until your claim actually gets processed. Mine came in slightly lower than the estimate because of how they counted one of my quarters.

0 coins

How long did it take before you actually started receiving payments? I'm trying to plan my budget right now

0 coins

Took about 3 weeks from my filing date before the first payment hit. There's a mandatory unpaid waiting week too which people forget about so factor that in

0 coins

Honestly when I was trying to figure all this out I was going CRAZY trying to get someone from EDD on the phone to just walk me through the calculation. Kept getting the busy signal or getting disconnected after waiting 45 minutes. My neighbor actually told me about a service called Claimyr that gets you connected to an actual EDD agent without the insane hold times. I used it and finally got to talk to someone who calculated my exact WBA based on my actual wage records. Website is claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains how it works. Honestly wish I'd known about it sooner.

0 coins

I've been trying to call EDD for days and can't get through to anyone. Might look into this. Did you feel like the agent was actually helpful when you got through?

0 coins

Yes the agent pulled up my exact wage records and told me precisely what my WBA would be before I even got my award letter. Way better than guessing from calculators

0 coins

never heard of that service before. seems weird but if it actually works I get why people try it. getting edd on the phone is basically impossible

0 coins

the hold times at EDD are genuinely unreal. i once sat on hold for 3 hours and then got disconnected right when someone picked up. absolute nightmare

0 coins

just here to say the $450 max is wild considering California cost of living lol. how is that supposed to help anyone pay bay area rent

0 coins

preach. i got approved at $412/week and my rent is $2,100. unemployment is basically just keeping the lights on not actually surviving

0 coins

exactly and then they have all these job search requirements on top of it so you're also spending money on gas or transit going to interviews

0 coins

One thing to know - you also get a $25 weekly dependent allowance for each dependent you have, up to a certain number. It's not much but it adds a little to your weekly amount if you have kids. Also worth knowing that the amount you receive can change if EDD discovers any discrepancies in your reported wages.

0 coins

Oh I didn't know about the dependent allowance. I have two kids so that would add $50 a week which helps a little

0 coins

Actually I want to double check that - I believe the dependent allowance in California is $25 per dependent per week but there may be a cap on the number of dependents they count. Definitely worth asking EDD directly to confirm your specific situation

0 coins

You're right to flag that, the exact rules can vary so best to confirm with EDD rather than take my word for it

0 coins

Something nobody mentioned yet - your weekly benefit amount gets reduced dollar for dollar if you earn any wages while collecting. So if you do any part time work during your claim you have to report it and they'll reduce your payment. Some people don't realize this and then end up with an overpayment notice which is a whole mess to deal with

0 coins

Yeah I read about this. I'm hoping to pick up some gig work while searching for full time employment. So I'd have to report every single dollar I make each week?

0 coins

Every single dollar yes. The reduction formula in California is you keep 25% of your WBA before they start reducing dollar for dollar. So there's a small earnings disregard but beyond that it comes straight off your benefit

0 coins

This is actually a little more nuanced - California has an earnings disregard that lets you keep the first 25% of your WBA without any reduction. Earnings above that 25% threshold reduce your benefit dollar for dollar. So it does pay to do some part time work, just document everything and report accurately

0 coins

i just got my award letter last week and i was so confused reading it. mine says $389 per week. i calculated what i thought it would be and got a totally different number. is there a way to dispute the WBA if you think they calculated it wrong

0 coins

Yes you can absolutely dispute the WBA calculation. You need to request a wage audit from EDD where they re-examine your base period wages against what your employer reported. Sometimes there are errors in employer-reported wages. You have 30 days from your award notice to appeal if you believe the amount is incorrect.

0 coins

okay thank you. my employer definitely messed up my W2 last year so maybe that's affecting it. going to try to get EDD on the phone to ask about this

0 coins

Getting edd on the phone to dispute WBA calculations is really tough. I tried for two weeks when I had an issue. Eventually used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach an agent and they were able to look at my wage records right then and explain the discrepancy. Saved me a ton of time and stress

0 coins

I work in HR and see this confusion constantly when employees get laid off. The California EDD base period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. So wages you earned in the most recent completed quarter often don't count toward your base period, which surprises a lot of people. If your wages are low in those four quarters but you earned a lot in the most recent quarter that doesn't count, you might qualify under the alternative base period instead.

0 coins

This is really useful actually. I had a good quarter right before my layoff so the alternative base period might help me. How do I request that?

0 coins

You have to specifically request the alternative base period calculation from EDD - it's not automatic. They'll only use it if you don't qualify under the standard base period or if your benefit amount would be higher. Call or message them through UI Online to request the comparison

0 coins

didn't know alternative base period was a thing. learned something new today

0 coins

The thing that frustrated me most is that EDD doesn't proactively tell you all these details. Like you'd never know about the alternative base period or the dependent allowance unless you went searching for it or knew to ask. The whole system feels designed to make you get less than you're entitled to by just not informing people.

0 coins

100% agree. I only found out I qualified for more money because I happened to read a Reddit thread. EDD should explain all of this upfront

0 coins

Welcome to government agencies lol. The information is technically available but buried in PDFs and FAQ pages that nobody reads until they're desperate

0 coins

quick question that might be dumb - does the weekly benefit amount go up at all during a long unemployment spell or does it stay the same the whole time you're collecting

0 coins

Not a dumb question at all. Your WBA stays fixed for the duration of your benefit year (which is 52 weeks from when you filed). It only changes if EDD does a wage audit and discovers an error, or if you're receiving a dependent allowance and your dependent situation changes. It does not increase with inflation or cost of living during your claim.

0 coins

okay that makes sense, thanks. so whatever the letter says is what i'm getting the whole time

0 coins

Correct, the amount on your award letter is set for the entire benefit year unless something changes with your wage records

0 coins

UPDATE: Finally got through to EDD and had an agent go through my wage calculation with me. Turns out I was looking at the wrong quarter as my highest - they explained that the base period excludes the most recent full quarter which I hadn't understood. My actual WBA came out to $418 per week which is better than I was afraid of. Still not much for California but at least I understand how they calculated it now. For anyone else trying to get through to actually talk to someone - I ended up using Claimyr after reading the recommendation in this thread. It worked for me, I got connected in like 40 minutes instead of the hours I'd been spending trying to call on my own.

0 coins

Glad you got it sorted out! The base period thing trips everyone up the first time. $418 is near the max which means your wages were solid, hope the job search goes quickly

0 coins

Nice update. Hope you find something soon. Make sure you're documenting your job search activities every week - EDD requires 3 employer contacts per week and they can audit that

0 coins

Good outcome! Just also make sure you certify your weekly claims on time - missing a certification week can cause problems and you may have to re-certify or explain the gap

0 coins

my situation is a little different - i was working two jobs and got laid off from one but not the other. does EDD count both jobs wages when calculating the weekly benefit amount or just the one you got laid off from

0 coins

EDD counts all covered wages during your base period from all employers regardless of which job you lost. So both jobs' wages would factor into your WBA calculation. However since you're still working the second job, you'd have to report those earnings each week when you certify and they'd reduce your benefit accordingly based on the earnings rules we discussed earlier

0 coins

oh interesting so i might actually have a higher WBA calculated from both jobs but then it gets reduced by what i'm still making. complicated

0 coins

Exactly right. But the benefit is that your WBA floor is higher since both wage histories count. You could end up getting partial benefits each week as long as your combined current wages plus the disregard amount are below your WBA. Worth doing the math

0 coins

Something I want to add that I haven't seen mentioned - when you certify your weekly claims you're asked if you were able and available to work each day. A lot of people answer this automatically without thinking. If you had any days where you genuinely couldn't work (sick, had to care for a family member, etc.) and you certify yes to available, that can create issues later if EDD ever audits your claim. Answer honestly every week.

0 coins

Good to know. I've been answering yes to everything because I am available but I'll make sure I keep thinking about it each week rather than just auto-filling

0 coins

this is really important advice. my coworker got an overpayment notice because of certification inconsistencies and it was a nightmare sorting out

0 coins

does anyone know if theres a way to see exactly how EDD calculated your WBA in your UI Online account? like the actual math not just the final number

0 coins

Yes - in your UI Online account you can view your Benefit Determination which breaks down your base period wages by quarter and shows which quarter was used as your highest earning quarter for the calculation. It doesn't show every step of the formula but you can see the wage data they used

0 coins

found it thank you! my employer reported way less than i actually made in Q2. going to need to get this sorted out

0 coins

Get your pay stubs together and contact EDD about a wage discrepancy. If your employer underreported wages it can significantly affect your WBA and you have the right to correct it

0 coins

I want to flag something for people who are in adjudication right now - your WBA can't even be confirmed until adjudication clears. I was stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks and during that whole time I couldn't even verify my payment amount. When it finally cleared everything backdated which was a relief but those were a stressful 5 weeks not knowing what I'd get.

0 coins

I'm in adjudication right now and this is exactly my situation. Did you do anything specific to speed up the adjudication or did you just wait it out?

0 coins

I called repeatedly but couldn't get through for weeks. Eventually used Claimyr to get an actual agent on the line - claimyr.com - and the agent was able to see my adjudication issue and escalate it internally. Don't know if that's what moved it but it cleared about a week after that call

0 coins

Okay thank you. I'm going to try that. Being in limbo not knowing how much I'll even get is really stressful especially when bills are due

0 coins

For people wondering about the timeline after approval - EDD will send you a paper Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award that shows your WBA, your maximum benefit amount for the year, and your benefit year dates. You should also see this info in your UI Online account. The maximum benefit amount is typically your WBA times 26 so at the $450 max that's $11,700 total available for the benefit year.

0 coins

So you only get 26 weeks total? I thought it was longer than that

0 coins

In California regular UI is up to 26 weeks yes. There used to be extended benefits during certain economic conditions but currently the standard is 26 weeks maximum

0 coins

Correct on the 26 weeks. During periods of high state unemployment there can be extended benefits programs that kick in automatically but those require specific economic triggers to activate. Right now in 2025 you should plan around the 26 week baseline

0 coins

last thing i'll add - make sure you're tracking your job search contacts religiously. I almost got flagged because I didn't keep records of the employers I contacted. EDD can request your job search log at any time and if you can't produce it you could get disqualified and have to pay back benefits. Keep a spreadsheet with dates, company names, contact methods, and position titles

0 coins

Yeah I've been keeping a notes app log but I should probably move it to a spreadsheet. Good reminder

0 coins

EDD's website also has a job search log template you can download and print. Old school but it works and is already formatted the way they want to see it

0 coins

wait they can really audit your job search records randomly? i had no idea that was a thing
