EDD UI Online suddenly working - got unexpected callback and fixed my stuck account
After 3 frustrating months trying to reopen my claim, something WEIRD just happened with EDD that actually worked! My UI Online account has been frozen since December - every time I tried to certify, it kept showing my old claim from last April and wouldn't let me file a new one. The 'File New Claim' button was grayed out completely. So this morning I called at exactly 8:02am (my usual routine) but instead of the dreaded 'we're experiencing high call volume' message, I got through! Then something completely unexpected - they actually offered me a CALLBACK option after a 22-minute wait estimate. I was skeptical but pressed 1 for callback, and guess what? They actually called back in about 15 minutes! The rep explained that my account had a technical glitch where the system wasn't recognizing my benefit year had ended, so it wouldn't allow a new claim submission. She manually filed a new claim for me right over the phone, and suddenly my UI Online updated with the new claim info! Has anyone else experienced this callback feature or getting this 'stuck account' glitch fixed? I'm still in shock that something actually went RIGHT with EDD. The rep mentioned they're working on fixing this system bug - apparently it's affecting lots of people whose benefit years ended recently.

•Yes - I used the 5616 number! I think the key was calling right at 8:02am (not 8:00 - those first 2 minutes the system is still setting up I think). The callback option didn't appear immediately - it came after being on hold for about 5 minutes. Hang in there!

This is actually a known issue with UI Online that's been happening since they updated the system in January 2025. It's called a "benefit year transition error" and it happens when your previous claim data doesn't properly archive in their database. The good news is that once they manually update it, your claim should process normally going forward. Make sure you certify for any back weeks you might be eligible for - they should appear in your account within 24-48 hours after the rep fixed your account. The callback feature was rolled out quietly last month as part of their service improvements, but it's not available to everyone yet - they're still testing it in certain call queues.

•Thank you! That's super helpful info. It makes sense now why this happened. The rep didn't explain the technical details like you did. I'll check for those back certifications tomorrow - she did mention something about a 24-hour system update.

•I can confirm the callback feature is real, but it's not consistently available. I work with unemployment claimants regularly, and it seems they only offer it during certain times when call volume is at specific levels. If you've been struggling to connect with EDD, you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that helps you get through to an EDD representative much faster. Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Many of my clients have had success with it when they were stuck in situations like yours with accounts frozen or claims pending for weeks.

This is giving me hope! My account has been showing a disqualification notice from my previous claim (from October 2024) even though I'm trying to file a new claim now in 2025. Every time I login it's just stuck on that old disqualification screen and none of the links work. I've been calling daily for 2 weeks and just get the "we can't take your call" message. Did anyone else have an issue with a disqualification notice stuck on their account when trying to file a new claim?

•thats different from what OP had. sounds like u got a flag on ur account from past claim. u need tier 2 specialist to remove disqual flag before new claim can process. regular tier 1 agents cant help with that

I wouldn't get too excited about EDD suddenly being functional. Their systems randomly work for a day or two and then go back to being a complete disaster. I've dealt with them for years through multiple claims and the pattern is always the same - brief moments of competence followed by months of chaos. That callback feature has actually existed since 2023 but it only works when they're not overwhelmed with calls (which is approximately 3 days per year lol). Also, that "glitch" your rep mentioned isn't a glitch - it's by design. They make it difficult to file new claims because they're trying to reduce their workload. I had a friend who worked at EDD and they confirmed this. The entire system is intentionally complicated to discourage people from collecting benefits they're entitled to.

•that's so messed up if true!! i've paid into this system for 12 years and now when i need help they're purposely making it hard?? no wonder my assemblyperson's office said most of their constituent cases are EDD problems!!

When you called, did they verify your identity before helping you? I'm asking because I've been having a similar issue with a stuck account, but I also had an ID.me verification problem last month. I'm wondering if I need to resolve the ID verification before they'll help with the stuck claim issue.

•Yes, they did verify my identity - asked for SSN, address, birth date, and the last employer on my claim. But they didn't mention anything about ID.me during our call. Maybe your issues are connected though? It might be worth specifically asking about the ID verification when you get through.

congrats on getting thru! teh EDD is sooooo hit or miss... one day nothing works, next day everything fine. it's like they roll dice each morning to decide if they gonna function that day lol. my brother-in-law got his claim fixed last week but took him 5 HOURS on hold!!!

•5 hours?! That's insane. I guess I got really lucky with the callback option. It's crazy how inconsistent their service is.

As an update to everyone following this thread: The callback feature is now officially part of EDD's new contact center upgrade. It should be available to everyone by the end of April 2025, according to their latest press release. Also, for those experiencing the "stuck account" or "benefit year transition error" - they've acknowledged this as a widespread issue affecting approximately 14,000 claimants whose benefit years ended between December 2024 and February 2025. They're supposedly working on a system-wide fix, but in the meantime, getting through to a representative who can manually update your account is the only solution.
