Unable to work due to back injury - will it affect my EDD SDI claim or disqualify me permanently?

I injured my back at home last month (definitely NOT work-related) and had to stop working halfway through two short-term assignments. I completed day 1 of both jobs but couldn't finish the second day for either because of severe back pain. My doctor has put me on disability until May 1, 2025 (about 3 weeks total). I've never filed for disability before and I'm confused about the process. I know I need to indicate I was 'too sick/injured to work' on my certification, but I'm worried this might completely disqualify me from benefits or mess up my claim somehow? Does anyone know if being out of work for 3 weeks due to an injury will cause problems with my SDI application? Also, is there a specific EDD disability specialist I can talk to directly? Their automated system is completely unhelpful and I'm getting desperate as bills are piling up. Any advice on navigating this situation would be greatly appreciated!

You're getting confused between disability and unemployment. If you're injured and can't work, you should be filing for State Disability Insurance (SDI), NOT unemployment insurance (UI). UI is for when you're able to work but can't find a job. SDI is what you need since you have a doctor's note saying you can't work until May 1st. The whole purpose of SDI is to provide income when you're temporarily unable to work due to injury or illness.

Oh shoot, you're right! I thought SDI was just another name for unemployment benefits. So I should be applying for SDI instead? Will my doctor need to fill out special paperwork? This is all so confusing.

Your doctor needs to submit a medical certification form (called a DE 2501) to EDD to confirm your disability. You should file a claim through SDI Online as soon as possible. There's a 7-day waiting period before benefits start, but since you've already been out of work, that waiting period has probably already passed. Back injuries are definitely covered under SDI as long as they prevent you from doing your regular work. Whether it's work-related or not doesn't matter for SDI (though if it was work-related you'd be going through workers' comp instead).

Thank you so much! I just checked and my doctor already submitted that form. But now I'm worried since it's been almost 2 weeks since my injury - is there a deadline for applying? Will I lose those first two weeks of benefits?

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED!!! I had a similar back injury last year and they DENIED my claim saying I didn't provide enough medical evidence even though my doctor sent EVERYTHING they asked for!!! You need to call them EVERY DAY until you get someone who will actually help. They hope you'll just give up!!

This isn't helpful. Not everyone has the same experience, and most claims that have proper documentation get approved. The key is making sure your doctor has been thorough in documenting your inability to perform your normal work functions.

You need to file your SDI claim within 49 days of your disability start date or you could lose benefits. Since you're only at about 2 weeks, you're still fine. But do it ASAP! Make sure your doctor clearly notes that you cannot perform your regular work duties. For back injuries, they'll want to see specific functional limitations (can't lift more than X pounds, can't sit/stand for Y hours, etc). Also, keep all your medical appointment records in case they request additional info.

Thanks for the info about the 49 days! That's a relief. My doctor wrote that I can't lift more than 5 pounds and can't sit or stand for more than 30 minutes at a time. Hopefully that's specific enough.

I was in the same situation last month - couldn't get through to anyone at EDD SDI after trying for days. I finally used this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone about your claim status or have specific questions. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

my sister jus went thru this whole process for her pregancy leave which is under sdi too. she said the most important thing is that ur doctor fills out all the paperwork right and is specific about why you cant do your job. if they just say "back pain" without details they might deny you. also she said don't mess with the dates - if you say you worked on a day you were supposed to be disabled they get all confused lol

That's good to know about being specific! I'm worried because I did work one day for each assignment while I was already having back pain. It got worse overnight though which is why I couldn't continue. I wonder if that will cause problems...

As long as your disability started after those workdays, there shouldn't be an issue. The key is that your disability claim start date matches with when your doctor certified you as unable to work. If you worked partial days or pushed through pain before officially going on disability, that's okay. Just be accurate about your last day worked on the application. Also, if your claim gets approved, you'll need to complete bi-weekly certifications confirming you're still disabled during the claim period.

Thank you so much for the detailed information! I'll make sure all my dates are accurate. I feel much better about the whole process now.

Just to clarify one important thing - your disability payments will be calculated based on your base period wages (from about 5-17 months before your claim starts). So if you've had steady work in 2024, you should qualify for a decent benefit amount. The current maximum weekly benefit is around $1,620 for 2025. If approved, payments are made via EDD debit card or direct deposit, usually every two weeks after you certify.

wait that's wayyy more than unemployment pays right??? maybe i should be on disability for my chronic back pain lol jk. But for real, do they check if ur actually disabled somehow? my friend said they never even called his doctor

Yes, they absolutely do verify disabilities. While they may not always call your doctor, they review the medical certification form and can request additional medical records if they have questions. They can also require independent medical examinations if they suspect fraud. Disability fraud is taken very seriously and can result in penalties, repayment requirements, and even criminal charges in serious cases. Only apply if you have a legitimate disability certified by a doctor.

I definitely have a legitimate injury - sitting at my computer for work is unbearable right now. I'm actually relieved to hear they verify everything properly. I'll submit my application today and hopefully everything goes smoothly. Thanks everyone for the helpful information!
