Can I backdate my EDD SDI claim to include previous week with same injury?
I injured my back a couple weeks ago and my doctor put me out of work for a week. I went back to work yesterday thinking I was better, but my back totally flared up again after just one day. Now my doctor has extended my disability until the end of next month. When I file my SDI claim online, can I include that first week I was out (even though I worked one day in between)? Or do I need to file two separate claims? I'm worried about the waiting period and don't want to lose benefits for those first days. This is my first time filing for disability so I'm super confused about the whole process.

Yes, you can include the first week in your current claim since it's the same medical condition. This is called a "recurrent disability" in EDD terms. As long as you're filing for the same condition and it's within 90 days of your initial disability, it's treated as one continuous claim. The one day you worked won't disrupt this. You'll only need to serve one 7-day waiting period for the entire claim period. Make sure your doctor documents that it's the same injury on your medical certification (DE 2501).

•Thank you so much! That's a relief. Do I just enter all the dates on one form then? I've been stressing about potentially losing money from that first week.

•That's good to know it worked for you! Did you have any issues with how you reported that one day you worked in between?

Make sure when you file that you clearly indicate which days you were disabled and which day you worked. There's a section on the SDI Online claim form where you can note your work status for each day. Be precise about this because EDD might flag your claim if dates don't match what your employer reports. Also, have your doctor clearly state on the medical certification that this is a continuation/exacerbation of the same condition. That documentation is crucial.

•THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!! I didn't mark my work days correctly and they DELAYED my claim for THREE WEEKS while they "investigated" and I had to send in pay stubs and a letter from HR!!! The EDD system is DESIGNED to find ANY reason to deny or delay your claim!!!

My cousin had something similar with her shoulder. She went back too soon and had to go out again. I think she said something about needing to make sure the doctor uses the original diagnosis code? Not 100% sure though.

I've been in this exact situation with my disability claim. The key is actually calling EDD SDI and explaining the situation directly. Of course, that's easier said than done - I spent 4 days trying to get through their phone system. If you want to save yourself the headache, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. The agent explained exactly how to file my claim to include both periods and made notes in my file. Totally worth it to get a clear answer directly from EDD.

•It definitely worked for me. I was skeptical too, but after wasting days trying to get through on my own, I was desperate. They basically call EDD for you using their system that keeps redialing. When they get through, they connect you directly with the EDD agent. The agent I spoke with was super helpful about my recurrent disability question.

Update: I called EDD (finally got through after 2 hours on hold) and they confirmed I should file just ONE claim and include both periods since it's the same medical condition. The rep said to make sure my doctor clearly notes it's the same condition on the medical certification form. They also said I need to report that one day I worked when I certify for benefits. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Great! Glad you got it sorted out. One additional tip - keep a record of the date/time of your call and the name of the representative if possible. Sometimes having that documentation can help if there are any issues later with your claim processing.

This is exactly the kind of situation where getting clear guidance from EDD upfront saves so much stress later! For anyone else reading this thread - Connor's experience shows how important it is to document everything. I'd also recommend taking screenshots of your online claim submission and keeping copies of all medical forms. The EDD system can be glitchy and having backup documentation has saved me multiple times when dealing with my own disability claims. Hope your back heals up quickly Connor!

•This is such great advice! I'm new to this whole disability process and seeing Connor's successful outcome gives me hope. The documentation tip is really helpful - I never would have thought to screenshot my online submission. It's reassuring to know that there are people in this community who've been through similar situations and are willing to share their experiences. Thanks for looking out for everyone!

As someone who's been through the EDD disability process multiple times, I want to emphasize how crucial it is to be completely transparent about your work history when filing. Connor did the right thing by calling EDD directly - that phone call documentation could be invaluable if any questions arise later. One thing I'd add is to also inform your employer's HR department about your disability claim timeline, especially since you worked that one day in between. Sometimes there can be discrepancies between what you report and what your employer reports to EDD, which can trigger unnecessary investigations. Keep all your medical records organized and make sure your doctor is aware that this needs to be documented as a continuous condition. The EDD system is getting better, but it's still important to cross your t's and dot your i's!

•This is really valuable advice, especially about coordinating with HR! I'm actually dealing with a similar back injury situation right now and hadn't thought about the potential discrepancy issue between my reports and what my employer might submit. It's really encouraging to see how Connor got everything sorted out by being proactive and calling EDD directly. The community support here is amazing - so many helpful tips that I never would have known about otherwise. Thanks for sharing your experience Pedro!

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - hurt my wrist at work, went back too early, and now it's worse than before. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been so helpful! Connor, I'm glad you got it all sorted out by calling EDD directly. That gives me hope that I can get mine figured out too. Pedro's point about notifying HR is something I hadn't considered - definitely going to do that tomorrow. It's amazing how this community shares such practical advice that you just don't find anywhere else. Thanks everyone for being so generous with your knowledge!

•I'm so sorry to hear about your wrist injury Isabella! It's frustrating when you try to push through and end up making things worse - I've been there too. This community has been such a lifesaver for navigating all the EDD confusion. One thing I'd add from my own experience is to make sure you document the exact date when your symptoms returned/worsened, especially if you're planning to include both periods in one claim like Connor did. Having that timeline clear in your head (and written down) will help when you're filling out the forms or talking to EDD. Wishing you a smooth claims process and a speedy recovery!
