Need help timing my EDD SDI claim - injured off-work but still receiving final paycheck
I'm really confused about when to start my disability claim and could use some advice! I got injured during my personal time (not work related) on April 21st, and my doctor says I'll need to be off work for about 2 months to recover. The thing is, I'm still pretty new at my job, and my employer just processed my final paycheck on May 8th. I'm not sure if I should have started my SDI claim on the date of injury (April 21) or after my last paycheck (May 8). Does anyone know the right way to do this? I don't want to mess up my benefits by putting the wrong start date on my application. Also, is there a waiting period I need to account for? This is my first time applying for disability and I'm worried about doing everything correctly.

You shud apply asap! The waiting period is 1 week anyways, so ur already losing money by waiting. Doesnt matter about the paycheck, just file now

•Thanks for responding! So it doesn't matter that I already got paid through May 8th? Won't that overlap with SDI benefits if I put April 21 as my disability date?

The previous comment isn't quite right. Your SDI claim should start on the first full day you were unable to work due to your disability (April 21), but EDD won't pay benefits for any period you received regular wages. You need to report those wages when you file. There's a 7-day unpaid waiting period before benefits begin, and your claim must be filed within 49 days of your disability start date or you could lose benefits. When you apply, make sure to enter April 21 as your first day of disability, then accurately report all wages received after that date (including your May 8th paycheck). EDD will calculate your benefits and adjust for any overlap with wages. Hope your recovery goes smoothly!

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! That makes sense now. I was worried about reporting the wrong dates and getting in trouble for overlapping benefits. I'll make sure to report my May 8th paycheck when I file the claim with April 21 as my disability start date.

I went through something EXACTLY like this last year!!! Put your ACTUAL disability date (when doc took you off work) even if you were still getting paid. EDD will sort it out but they need the REAL dates - and they'll check with your doctor. If you put the wrong start date your whole claim could get denied and then you'll be REALLY stressed out trying to fix it!!

I see some confusion here, so let me clarify how this works: 1. Your claim start date should be April 21 (first day you were disabled) 2. There's a mandatory 7-day waiting period before benefits are payable 3. You must report ALL wages received after your disability began 4. Your benefit payments won't start until after both your waiting period AND any period covered by your final wages File your claim immediately if you haven't already - you only have 49 days from your disability date to file or you risk losing benefits. Make sure your doctor submits the medical certification promptly too. If you're having trouble getting through to EDD to ask questions (which is common), I recommend using Claimyr.com - it helped me get through to a live agent when I couldn't get answers about my claim. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I'll start my application today with April 21 as the start date. And thanks for the Claimyr suggestion - I tried calling EDD yesterday and couldn't get through at all, so I might try that service if I have more questions.

My cousin works at EDD and told me that if you get final paychecks AFTER your disability started, they will adjust your benefit start date. So you'll probably start getting SDI payments after May 15th (that's May 8th + the 7 day waiting period). Hope that helps!

•That's not entirely accurate. The 7-day waiting period starts from the disability date (April 21), not from the last paycheck date. However, you're right that EDD won't pay benefits for any period covered by regular wages. The system calculates this automatically once all wage information is reported correctly on the claim form.

Update: I filed my claim yesterday with April 21 as my disability start date and made sure to include information about my May 8th paycheck. The EDD representative I finally reached confirmed that was the correct approach. Now I'm just waiting for my doctor to submit the medical certification. Thanks everyone for your help!
