Denied unemployment due to low wages - Can I qualify for EDD SDI after accident?

I'm completely lost about what to do right now. I applied for unemployment benefits last month after my seasonal construction job ended, but EDD sent me a notice saying I 'did not earn enough wages in my base period' to qualify. Now I've gone and slipped on some ice outside my apartment and messed up my knee and ankle pretty badly. Doctor says I'll be off my feet for at least 6-8 weeks minimum while I recover from these injuries. Since I was denied for unemployment, does that mean I can't get disability either? I've never filed for disability before and honestly don't know if the same wage requirements apply. My doctor said she'd fill out whatever forms I need, but I don't want to waste time applying if I'm just going to get denied again. Can someone please explain if SDI has different qualification requirements than unemployment? My medical bills are already piling up and rent is due next week.

Good news! Unemployment Insurance (UI) and State Disability Insurance (SDI) have completely different eligibility requirements. UI is based on your base period wages, but SDI eligibility depends on whether you've paid into the SDI program during the 5-18 months before your disability began. Even with lower wages, you might still qualify for disability! You should apply for SDI right away through the EDD website. Your doctor will need to complete the medical certification portion (DE 2501). Don't delay - the sooner you apply, the sooner you might receive benefits.

Thank you so much for explaining this! I was really worried. I'll start my SDI application today. Will my doctor get the certification form automatically after I apply or do I need to bring it to her?

That's really reassuring to hear! How long did it take for your disability claim to get approved after you applied?

I'm in almost the exact same situation!! Applied for UI in December 2025, got denied for not enough wages, then broke my wrist in January. I was FREAKING OUT thinking I wouldn't qualify for anything but my friend told me to apply for SDI anyway. The SDI system looks at different quarters than UI does, and the minimum earnings requirement is way lower. I got approved last week and my first payment is already pending in my account. Don't give up!!! Apply TODAY!!!

Wow, that's amazing timing - almost exactly like my situation! Did you have any issues with the medical certification part? I'm worried my doctor might not fill it out right.

No issues with the medical part! My doctor filled it out right there during my appointment. Just make sure you give them your claim number after you submit your initial application. My doctor said they do these all the time.

I want to clear up some common misconceptions here: 1) UI and SDI have different eligibility requirements. UI requires substantial earnings in your base period (typically the 12-18 months before filing). SDI requires that you paid into the SDI program during a more recent period. 2) For SDI, you need approximately $300 in wages subject to SDI withholding during the base period (much lower than UI requirements). 3) The most important eligibility factor for SDI is having a certified medical condition that prevents you from performing your regular work for at least 8 consecutive days. Based on your accident and doctor's assessment, you likely meet the medical requirement. Check your pay stubs to see if SDI was deducted (usually labeled as CASDI). If so, apply immediately, as there's a 7-day waiting period before benefits begin, and you don't want to delay any longer.

Just adding that when you file for SDI, you want to do it within 49 days of becoming disabled or you could lose benefits. Don't wait! And if your doctor doesn't submit the medical certification right away, your claim will be delayed.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I just checked my older pay stubs and yes, I do see CASDI deductions! I'm going to apply today.

Has anyone else noticed how impossible it is to get through to an actual human at EDD? I spent TWO WEEKS trying to reach someone about my disability claim last month. Kept getting disconnected or put on hold forever. So frustrating when you're already dealing with an injury and can't work!

Have you tried using Claimyr? I was in the same boat trying to reach EDD about my disability claim for days. Claimyr connected me to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying unsuccessfully for over a week. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd and their website is claimyr.com. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone about your claim status or problems with your disability payments.

Never heard of it but I'll definitely check that out! Anything is better than calling 50 times a day and never getting through.

Don't forget to account for the 7-day waiting period when planning your finances. SDI has this mandatory unpaid waiting period before benefits start accruing. So even if you're approved right away, your first payment won't include that first week. Also, make sure you understand the certification process - you'll need to certify periodically that you're still disabled to keep receiving payments.

Thanks for mentioning this. I had no idea about the waiting period. Is there any way to get that week covered? Or is it just a loss I need to budget for?

Unfortunately, that first week is just unpaid - it's built into the SDI program design as a waiting period. No way around it. Just make sure you apply ASAP so you don't extend that unpaid time any longer than necessary.

My sister got denied for unemployment last year but received disability benefits after her surgery. The two programs have different funding sources and requirements. For SDI, your doctor's certification of your medical condition is the most important part. Since you mentioned you'll be off work for 6-8 weeks and your doctor is willing to complete the necessary paperwork, you should definitely apply for SDI benefits right away. Don't wait! The application process is fairly straightforward on the EDD website. Good luck with your recovery!
