I do mystery shopping and need help understanding how this works.
Let's say a mystery shopping company pays me $15 to complete an assignment. As part of the assignment, I am required to purchase a $3 item from the store and upload the receipt as proof of the visit. The company then pays me a total of $18, which includes the $15 shop fee and the $3.
If I am using actual business expenses rather than the standard 40% deduction, the full $18 would be reported as gross income and then the $3 purchase be deducted as a business expense? Or would the $3 be treated differently?
