Can I still get CalWORKs Emergency Assistance for December if it was my last month on CalFresh?

Hi everyone, I'm so confused about this Emergency Assistance situation. My CalFresh benefits officially ended in December 2025 (last month). I didn't reapply because I started a new job that puts me over the income limit. But I just heard about this Emergency Assistance payment that went out, and I'm wondering if I'm still eligible to receive it for December since I was technically still on CalFresh during that month? Has anyone been in this situation? My case worker doesn't return my calls and I really could use that extra money right now because my first paycheck from the new job is smaller than I expected (training pay 😫).

congrats on the new job!! i think ur asking about emergency allotment not emergency assistance which is diffrent thing. emergency allotments ended after the covid emergency was over in 2023 so there arent any EA payments going out anymore for calfresh

Oh wait really?? I'm sure my neighbor just got an emergency payment for her CalFresh last week. She showed me the paper that came with it and everything. Now I'm even more confused!

You might be mixing up programs. Emergency Assistance (EA) is usually part of CalWORKs (Cash Aid), not CalFresh. Are you asking about an emergency CalFresh supplement or CalWORKs emergency assistance? They're completely different programs with different eligibility requirements. If you're talking about CalWORKs homeless assistance or immediate need payments, that's different from regular CalFresh benefits. Can you clarify exactly what payment you're referring to?

I honestly don't know the difference. My neighbor who's on both CalWORKs and CalFresh got some kind of extra money and called it Emergency Assistance. I only had CalFresh, not Cash Aid, so maybe that's why I'm confused. Thanks for explaining!

Just to clear things up - it sounds like you're asking about a few different possible programs: 1. CalFresh Emergency Allotments - These were extra CalFresh benefits during COVID but ended in February 2023. 2. CalWORKs Immediate Need payment - This is for Cash Aid applicants who have an emergency while their application is being processed. 3. CalWORKs Homeless Assistance - Emergency housing help for families who are homeless or facing eviction. 4. EA (Emergency Assistance) - A specific short-term emergency program under CalWORKs. If you only received CalFresh (not CalWORKs), you wouldn't qualify for options 2-4. And option 1 no longer exists. Your neighbor might have received a regular CalWORKs benefit that you don't qualify for if you weren't on that program. If you're struggling financially with the transition to your new job, you might want to check if you qualify for other assistance programs like utility assistance through LIHEAP.

Thank you so much for breaking this down! I was definitely confused. I'm only familiar with CalFresh and didn't realize there were so many different emergency programs. This makes more sense now.

This is correct. I work with benefit recipients and there's a lot of confusion between the different programs. CalFresh (food assistance) and CalWORKs (cash assistance) are completely separate programs with different rules, even though you can apply for both through the same application.

Have you tried calling the CalFresh office? I was in the same boat trying to figure out my benefits last month and spent DAYS trying to get through the regular phone line. Finally I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person in about 20 minutes after being on hold for 3 hours before that. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Even though it sounds like you might not qualify for what you're asking about (based on what others said), at least you could get a definitive answer from a worker instead of guessing.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been trying to call my county office for days with no luck. I'll check out that service because I'd feel better hearing directly from them what I qualify for (or don't).

To directly answer your original question: If you only received CalFresh (SNAP) and December was your last month of eligibility, there is no "emergency payment" you would qualify for. The regular COVID emergency allotments ended in early 2023. If your county has some local disaster declaration with special payments, that would be very specific to your area, but this is not a statewide program currently in effect. As others mentioned, Emergency Assistance is typically part of CalWORKs (TANF), which is cash aid, not food benefits. If you weren't enrolled in CalWORKs, you wouldn't be eligible for those emergency programs. Since you mentioned starting a new job, be aware that for your final month on CalFresh, you were required to report within 10 days if your income exceeded the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) listed on your last approval notice. If you didn't report properly, there could potentially be an overpayment that would need to be repaid.

Oh no, I didn't know about reporting within 10 days! I thought since I wasn't reapplying it didn't matter. My income did go over the limit in December. Will they make me pay back my December benefits?

Yes, if your income in December went over your IRT (Income Reporting Threshold) and you didn't report it within 10 days, they could potentially establish an overpayment claim for your December benefits. When you receive CalFresh, you're required to report certain changes even during your certification period - going over the IRT is one of those mandatory reporting requirements. The county might identify this during their regular income verification processes and send you a notice about it. If they determine there was an overpayment, you'll receive a notice explaining the amount and your repayment options. If you're concerned, you can proactively contact the county and explain the situation. Sometimes being proactive can help resolve the situation more favorably.

Thank you for explaining this. I'll definitely contact them to sort this out. I had no idea I needed to report my income change since I wasn't planning to continue with CalFresh. I appreciate everyone's help clarifying all this!
