What's the updated CalFresh maximum benefit amount for a family of 7 in 2025?
Quick question - our household just increased to 7 people after my sister-in-law and her kids moved in with us. I need to report this household change on my SAR7 next month, but I'm trying to figure out what the new maximum benefit amount would be for a family of 7 for CalFresh in 2025. The county website still shows old charts from last year. Has anyone received the updated benefit amounts? Thanks in advance!

I think its around $1,975 but not 100% sure. They usually increase it every October.

•Thanks! That helps. Do you know if that's the max allotment or if it depends on our income? We make about $4,100/month combined now.

For 2025, the maximum monthly allotment for a household of 7 is $1,987. But remember, that's the MAXIMUM amount - what you actually get depends on your household income after deductions. You'll need to report the household change within 10 days since it affects your eligibility and benefit amount. Make sure to include your sister-in-law's income (if any) when you report the change. Also, be prepared to provide verification of her identity and residency.

•Thank you so much for the exact number! Yes, she has part-time income that I'll need to report. Do you know what the current gross income limit would be for 7 people? Just trying to make sure we'll still qualify.

DONT FORGET TO ASK IF YOUR SISTER IN LAW SHOULD APPLY SEPARATELY!!! The county worker told me sometimes its better to have separate cases if the new person has their own income. They did the calculation both ways for me when my adult son moved back home and we got more benefits with seperate cases!!! Its confusing but worth asking!!

•This is actually really good advice! When my brother moved in with me last year, we initially reported as one household and our benefits went DOWN because of his income. The worker suggested we could be separate households since we buy and prepare food separately, and it worked out better for both of us.

The maximum CalFresh benefit for a 7-person household in 2025 is $1,987 per month. The gross monthly income limit for a household of 7 is approximately $6,540 (200% of the Federal Poverty Level), and the net income limit is around $3,215. Remember that you get deductions for housing costs, childcare expenses, and a standard deduction before they calculate your net income. Make sure to report the change on your SAR7 and include everyone's income and expenses. The exact benefit amount will depend on your household's specific financial situation after applying all applicable deductions.

•Thanks so much for the detailed info! That's a relief - our gross income of $4,100 is under the limit. I didn't realize we get deductions for housing costs too, which would help since our rent is $2,200/month now. I'll make sure to include that on the SAR7.

I have 5 in my household and get $1,500 so $1,987 sounds right for 7 people. Make sure you tell them if your sister in law pays any child support cuz that counts as a deduction too!

Just went through something similar when my nephew moved in with us. The most frustrating thing was trying to get through to the CalFresh office to report the change - I spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you back when a worker is available. Saved me so much time! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. After that, the process was pretty straightforward - had to submit proof of his identity and residence, and our benefits were adjusted within a week.

•That's super helpful! I've had the same problem with getting disconnected after waiting forever. I'll check out that service because I need to talk to someone about all these changes. Thanks!

hey just remember your sister-in-law needs to report this change on her CalFresh too if she's already getting benefits somewhere else! they can't double count the kids on two seperate cases.

•Good point! She doesn't have her own case right now, but I'll make sure to mention that to her.

Adding more people to ur household is ussually good for CalFresh benefits but sometimes it can mess things up if those people have income. My cousin added her boyfriend to her case and her benefits went DOWN even tho they had another mouth to feed!! Make sure u understand how the income is gonna affect ur benefits before u make any changes!!!

One more thing to consider - when you report this change, you'll need to provide verification documents. Typically for adding household members, you'll need: 1) Identification for the new members, 2) Proof of residence (showing they live with you), 3) Income verification for your sister-in-law, and 4) Citizenship/immigration status documentation. Having these ready when you submit your SAR7 will prevent delays in processing the change.

•Thank you! I have her ID and can get a paystub. For proof of residence, would a signed statement from me as the lease holder work? She doesn't have any bills in her name yet.

•A landlord statement can work, but it's better to have something official. You could add her name to a utility bill, or she could change her address on her ID, bank statement, or vehicle registration. Some counties also accept mail addressed to her at your address (like medical correspondence or school documents for the kids). Different counties have different requirements, so it's best to check with your specific county office.
