Got P-EBT for my 6-year-old but not 3-month baby - will benefits come separately?
So I just received a P-EBT card in the mail today for my 6-year-old (name starts with I). The card had about $650 loaded which is really helpful! But I'm wondering if my 3-month-old baby should also qualify? Will they send a separate card for the baby or should both kids be on the same card? I don't remember selecting anything specific during the application process about how benefits should be distributed. Has anyone with multiple kids experienced getting P-EBT cards at different times?

P-EBT is specifically for school-aged children who would normally receive free or reduced-price meals at school. Since your 3-month-old isn't in school, they wouldn't qualify for P-EBT specifically. However, you should definitely apply for regular CalFresh benefits for your whole household if you haven't already. That would cover food assistance for your baby too. The P-EBT program is separate from regular CalFresh.

•Omg I feel so dumb now! 🤦♀️ That makes total sense since it's for school meals. We do have regular CalFresh for the whole family already. Thank you for explaining!

My kids each got there own cards and they came like 3 weeks apart so maybe ur babys will still come?? I think they do it by age starting with oldest but thats just my guess

•That's not quite right. P-EBT is only for children who would receive free or reduced-price meals at school. A 3-month-old wouldn't qualify since they don't attend school. You might be thinking of regular CalFresh benefits, which would cover the whole household including infants.

I had a similar confusion when I got my daughter's P-EBT card last year! The P-EBT program is specifically tied to the National School Lunch Program, so it's only for kids who would normally get free/reduced meals at school. Your baby would qualify for regular CalFresh though, which is a separate program. If you're having trouble getting through to CalFresh to ask questions about either program, I recently used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual person at the county office in under 5 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone directly!

•It does have a fee, but considering I spent 3+ hours trying to get through before, it was worth it for me. They only charge if they successfully connect you to someone.

Just to add some clarification - P-EBT (Pandemic EBT) eligibility is determined by school enrollment and participation in free/reduced meal programs. In 2025, California is still providing some P-EBT benefits to eligible schoolchildren under the extended program. Your 3-month-old would not qualify for P-EBT, but here are some programs they might qualify for: 1. Regular CalFresh (SNAP) benefits for the whole household 2. WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) - specifically designed for pregnant women and children under 5 3. Child Tax Credit - not food assistance but helpful for families If you haven't already, I strongly recommend applying for WIC since it provides specific nutritional support for infants and young children. You can have both CalFresh and WIC simultaneously.

•Thank you for the detailed information! We do have WIC already for the baby, which has been super helpful for formula. And we have regular CalFresh too. I just got confused when the P-EBT card arrived and thought maybe both kids would get it. This makes much more sense now.

The system is soooo confusing!!! I got P-EBT for my kids last month but then my regular CalFresh got reduced and nobody explained why!!! Is the P-EBT supposed to count as income?? Did anyone else have this happen??? The whole system is designed to make us fail I swear.

•P-EBT benefits should NOT count as income for your CalFresh benefits calculation. If your CalFresh benefits were reduced at the same time, it was likely due to something else - perhaps a Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) was processed, or there was a change in household composition or income. I'd recommend calling your county office to ask specifically why your benefits changed.

•That's why I mentioned Claimyr above! Total game changer for actually getting through to a real person.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses! I understand now that P-EBT is specifically for school-aged children who would normally receive meals at school, which is why my 6-year-old qualified but my baby doesn't. We already have regular CalFresh and WIC for the whole family, so we're covered. I appreciate all the clarification!
