Emergency housing options with CalFresh/CalWORKs in Kern County - need immediate help!

I'm at my breaking point and need advice ASAP. My sister just told me she needs me and my 3 kids (ages 7, 5, and 2) out of her apartment by February 1st. That's only 2 weeks away and I have NOWHERE to go. I currently receive CalFresh and CalWORKs benefits but it's barely enough for food and basic necessities. I've called 2-1-1 three times but keep getting disconnected or told to call back. Does Kern County have emergency housing assistance I can apply for? Would my CalWORKs worker be able to help with this? I'm terrified of ending up in my car with the kids in the middle of winter. Any advice from someone who's been through this would mean the world to me right now.

Yes, there are several emergency housing options in Kern County that work with CalWORKs recipients. First, contact your CalWORKs eligibility worker IMMEDIATELY and ask about the Homeless Assistance Program. You can qualify for temporary shelter payments while you look for permanent housing. You might also be eligible for move-in costs like security deposit and first month's rent through the Permanent Homeless Assistance program. The Housing Authority of Kern County also has emergency vouchers, but there's typically a waitlist. Don't wait - call your worker first thing tomorrow morning.

Thank you so much for this info! I've been trying to reach my CalWORKs worker for 3 days but the phone system just keeps me on hold forever then disconnects. Is there a better number or way to contact them? My worker's name is Ms. Johnson but her direct line goes straight to voicemail.

when this happened to me and my boy last year i went to the salvation army on 821 Brundage Ln they have emergency shelter sometimes. also try CityServe they sometimes help with deposit if u can find a place. the system is so broken tho they make it almost impossible to get real help when u need it.

I also had a TERRIBLE time with housing assistance in Kern. The secret is to physically go to the office on 100 E California Ave, don't waste time with phones. The homeless assistance program can give you hotel vouchers for up to 16 days while you find somewhere permanent. Bring your ID, kids' birth certificates, and proof of income (CalWORKs/CalFresh paperwork). Ask specifically for the "Homeless Assistance Program" not general help or they'll just refer you elsewhere. Good luck!

Thank you both! I'm going to try going in person tomorrow morning. Do you know what time they open? I'll have to take all 3 kids with me which will be a nightmare but sounds like it's the only way to get help. Did either of you receive hotel vouchers or deposit assistance? I'm wondering how quickly they can actually help.

You need to know exactly what to ask for! In Kern County, there are specific programs that can help you: 1. Homeless Assistance Program through CalWORKs - provides temporary AND permanent assistance 2. Housing Support Program (HSP) - helps CalWORKs families find and keep housing 3. Housing and Disability Advocacy Program (HDAP) - if anyone in your family has disabilities Also, Kern County has the Bakersfield Homeless Center that works with families. They provide emergency shelter and help connecting to benefits. Call them at (661) 322-9199. The issue is getting through to your worker. Try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM or try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that helps you skip the phone queues and get a callback from a worker. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. My cousin used it when she couldn't reach her CalWORKs worker for two weeks.

This is good advice but I want to add that the Homeless Assistance Program has specific requirements. You can only get it once every 12 months (with some exceptions) and you need to provide proof that you're homeless or at risk of homelessness. Get a written statement from your sister that says you need to be out by February 1st. Also, if you go the temporary assistance route (hotel vouchers), you need to show you're actively looking for permanent housing.

Thank you so much for the details. I just checked out that Claimyr site and watched the video. I'm going to try it tomorrow because I'm desperate to talk to someone. Has anyone here used the Homeless Assistance Program recently? I'm worried because my sister is being really difficult about giving me any kind of written statement.

I've worked in housing services, and while it's true the system has problems, the Homeless Assistance Program actually works fairly well in Kern once you get in. OP, if your sister won't provide a statement, a self-declaration can sometimes work, especially in emergency situations. Just be 100% honest about your circumstances. One thing to note: when you get hotel vouchers, you MUST keep all receipts and document your housing search thoroughly. Keep screenshots of apartments you've called, names of managers you've spoken with, and applications you've submitted. This is absolutely required for continued assistance.

Just checking in - were you able to reach your worker or visit the office? The Kern County DPSS office opens at 8:00 AM and if you get there early (like 7:30), you'll usually be seen faster. Make sure to ask specifically for emergency homeless assistance for a family with children. This should prioritize your case. Also, bring a phone if possible so you can take pictures of any paperwork they give you - the documentation requirements can be overwhelming when you're already stressed.

I FINALLY got some help!! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got a callback within an hour from a supervisor. They're processing emergency assistance and I have an appointment tomorrow morning to complete the paperwork for temporary housing (hotel vouchers) and they'll help with deposit assistance once I find a place. THANK YOU ALL so much for the advice - I was seriously about to give up.

Thank you! I just wrote that down to ask about tomorrow. I feel like I need to ask about every possible program because they don't volunteer information. I appreciate everyone's help so much - this community has been more helpful than all the official resources I tried first.

Please update us after your appointment tomorrow! Make sure to arrive early with ALL documentation: ID, birth certificates, social security cards for everyone, proof of income, your CalWORKs/CalFresh approval letters, and anything showing your current living situation. I've seen people get turned away for missing just one document. The Homeless Assistance Program can provide up to 16 days of temporary housing and up to $2,500 for move-in costs when you find permanent housing. Good luck!

Will do! I have everything except my youngest's birth certificate (long story), but I have her Medi-Cal card. Hoping that will work. I'll let you all know how it goes. I honestly can't thank everyone enough for all this information. I've learned more here than from any of the official resources.

One more thing to know about the Homeless Assistance Program in Kern County - they typically issue vouchers for specific motels/hotels they work with, not just any place. These aren't always in the best areas, but they're safe. Some of the common ones are the Motel 6 on Colony Street and Economy Inn on Union. They'll tell you which ones are available. The housing search requirement is real - they'll give you a form to track your search efforts that needs to be completed daily.

0 coins

This is true! I got vouchers for Economy Inn and it wasn't great but was clean enough. The tricky part is that you need to check back with your worker EVERY WEEK to get the next voucher. They don't automatically give you all 16 days at once. Mark your calendar and be super proactive about following up or you could end up with a gap in coverage.

0 coins

Good to know about the weekly check-ins! @f108e199be8a make sure to set reminders on your phone for this. Also, when you're doing your housing search documentation, don't just focus on apartments - include manufactured home parks, room rentals, and even shared housing situations. The more options you document, the better. Some property managers are more willing to work with voucher programs than others, so ask specifically about CalWORKs housing assistance when you call.

@f108e199be8a I went through this same process in Kern County about 6 months ago with my two kids. One thing that really helped me was creating a simple spreadsheet on my phone to track all my housing search calls - date, property name, contact person, rent amount, and their response. The workers really appreciate when you're organized and it shows you're serious about finding permanent housing. Also, don't be discouraged if the first few places you call say no to vouchers - keep trying! I called 47 places before finding our current apartment. You've got this!

I'm so glad to see you got through to someone with Claimyr! That's amazing progress. Just wanted to add - when you go to your appointment tomorrow, ask if they have any childcare assistance or if there's a family-friendly waiting area. Bringing three young kids to a government office can be really stressful, but some offices have toys or designated areas. Also, if you have any medical documentation for yourself or the kids (like special needs, medications, etc.), bring that too as it can sometimes expedite services. You're doing everything right - hang in there!

@f108e199be8a That's such a relief to hear you got through! I just went through housing assistance in another county and wanted to add - if the kids get restless during your appointment, don't stress about it. The workers are used to families in crisis and understand. Also, when they give you the housing search form, ask if they have a list of landlords who regularly accept CalWORKs assistance - this can save you hours of calling places that will just say no. Some counties maintain these lists but don't always offer them unless you ask. Praying everything goes smoothly for you tomorrow!

I'm so happy to see you got help through Claimyr! That service really is a game-changer when the phone systems fail you. One more resource that might help - Kern County also has the Coordinated Entry System (CES) for homeless services. They can sometimes connect you to additional emergency funds or transitional housing programs that aren't part of the regular CalWORKs assistance. The number is (661) 868-1500. They work closely with local nonprofits and might have resources your CalWORKs worker doesn't know about. Best of luck with your appointment tomorrow - you're being such a strong advocate for your family!

This is such great additional information! @f108e199be8a I'm new to this community but have been following your situation and I'm so relieved you got help through Claimyr. The Coordinated Entry System is definitely worth calling - they sometimes have emergency funds that can bridge gaps while you're waiting for CalWORKs assistance to kick in. Also, if you haven't already, consider reaching out to local churches and community organizations. Many have emergency assistance funds for families with children, even if you're not a member. Wishing you all the best at your appointment tomorrow - you're doing an amazing job advocating for your kids in such a difficult situation!

Hey Ava, I just wanted to reach out as someone who's been in your shoes. Last spring I was facing eviction with my two kids and felt completely overwhelmed by the system. What really helped me was making a simple checklist before going into the office - it kept me focused when I was stressed and made sure I didn't forget to ask about anything important. For your appointment tomorrow, definitely ask about both the temporary assistance (hotel vouchers) AND the permanent assistance program at the same time. Sometimes they'll only tell you about one unless you specifically ask. Also, if they mention any waiting periods or delays, ask if there are emergency provisions for families with young children - there often are but you have to advocate for yourself. You're doing such a great job fighting for your family. The fact that you reached out here and got connected with help shows how resourceful and strong you are. Your kids are lucky to have you as their mom. Please keep us updated on how everything goes - we're all rooting for you!

@f108e199be8a I'm new here but wanted to add my support - you're handling this crisis with such strength! One small tip for tomorrow: if possible, bring snacks and a small activity for the kids since government appointments can run long. Also, don't be afraid to ask for clarification if they use confusing terms or acronyms - I made that mistake and almost missed out on additional assistance because I didn't understand what they were offering. You've already shown incredible resourcefulness by finding help through this community and Claimyr. Your determination to keep your family safe and housed is inspiring. Sending you positive thoughts for tomorrow's appointment!

I'm new to this community but wanted to reach out because your situation really resonates with me. I went through something similar in Riverside County last year with my daughter. One thing that helped me was asking the CalWORKs worker about the "good cause" exceptions for the Homeless Assistance Program - if you can show that your housing loss wasn't your fault (which it sounds like it wasn't), they can sometimes waive certain waiting periods or requirements. Also, when you're doing your housing search documentation, don't forget to include applications to low-income housing complexes even if they have waiting lists - the workers like to see that you're thinking long-term too. I'm so glad you found help through Claimyr and got that appointment set up! The hardest part is getting someone to actually listen, and it sounds like you've cleared that hurdle. Your persistence in seeking help shows what a dedicated mom you are. Keeping you and your kids in my thoughts for tomorrow's appointment!

@f108e199be8a I'm so inspired by how you've advocated for your family through this crisis! As someone new to this community, I'm amazed by the wealth of knowledge and support everyone has shared. The "good cause" exceptions Val mentioned are really important - definitely bring up that your sister is forcing you out through no fault of your own. Also, I wanted to add that some CalWORKs offices have emergency childcare assistance for appointments, so if tomorrow's meeting runs long, ask if they can help with that too. You've already accomplished the hardest part by getting through to someone who can help. Tomorrow is just about getting the paperwork started. You're doing an incredible job protecting your children and finding resources - that takes real strength. Wishing you the best outcome at your appointment tomorrow!

I'm new to this community but wanted to reach out because I've been following your story and I'm so relieved you got connected with help! As someone who works with families in crisis, I just wanted to add a few quick tips for your appointment tomorrow. First, ask specifically about the CalWORKs Housing and Disability Advocacy Program (HDAP) if any of your kids have any documented health issues - even something like asthma or developmental delays can qualify you for additional assistance. Second, when they give you the housing search documentation forms, ask if they have partnerships with any specific property management companies that regularly work with CalWORKs recipients - this can save you tons of rejection calls. Finally, don't forget to ask about utility assistance programs while you're there since you'll likely need help with deposits for electricity/gas when you find a place. The fact that you found this community and advocated so hard for your family shows what an amazing mom you are. Your kids are going to remember how you fought for them during this tough time. Sending you strength for tomorrow - you've got this!

@f108e199be8a I'm also new to this community but have been reading through your situation and I'm so glad you got help through Claimyr! Nathaniel's advice about HDAP is spot-on - even minor health issues can qualify you for additional support. I wanted to add that when you're at your appointment tomorrow, ask if they can give you a written summary of all the programs you're applying for and the timeline for each one. Government processes can be confusing and having it in writing helps you follow up properly. Also, if they mention any deadlines for paperwork or requirements, ask them to highlight those dates - missing a deadline can restart the whole process. You've shown incredible strength and resourcefulness throughout this crisis. The way you've researched options, reached out for help, and advocated for your family is truly admirable. Your children are so fortunate to have a mom who fights this hard for them. Praying your appointment goes smoothly tomorrow and you get all the assistance you need!

0 coins

@f108e199be8a I'm new here but wanted to add my support - you're handling an incredibly difficult situation with such grace and determination! One thing I learned from my own experience with emergency assistance is to ask if they can expedite your case due to having young children, especially a 2-year-old. Many offices have provisions for families with very young kids that can speed up the process. Also, when you get your housing search paperwork, consider asking local family resource centers and WIC offices if they know of landlords who are CalWORKs-friendly - these community connections sometimes know about openings before they're advertised. The fact that you found this community and used Claimyr to get help shows incredible resourcefulness. Your kids are lucky to have a mom who never stops fighting for them. Hoping everything goes smoothly at your appointment tomorrow - you've already overcome the biggest hurdle by getting someone to listen!

0 coins

I'm new to this community but wanted to reach out because your situation really hits close to home - I went through something very similar in Orange County with my two kids last year. I'm so relieved to see you got connected with help through Claimyr! That service is honestly a lifesaver when the regular phone systems fail you. For your appointment tomorrow, I'd suggest bringing a notebook to write down everything they tell you - when you're stressed and dealing with three kids, it's easy to forget important details. Also, don't be afraid to ask them to repeat information or explain programs in simpler terms. I made the mistake of nodding along when I didn't understand something and almost missed out on additional assistance. One thing that really helped me was asking if they had any emergency food assistance or diaper/clothing programs while I was there. When you're focused on housing, it's easy to forget about these immediate needs, but many offices have connections to local resources that can help with basics while you're in transition. You're doing such an incredible job advocating for your family. The fact that you reached out here, used every resource available, and got that appointment scheduled shows what a strong, devoted mom you are. Your kids are going to be okay because they have you fighting for them. Please update us after your appointment - this community is rooting for you!
