Can P-EBT be used at fast food restaurants like regular CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program?
So my kids just got P-EBT cards in the mail yesterday (we qualify through the school lunch program). I know with regular CalFresh you can use your EBT at certain fast food places if your county has the Restaurant Meals Program and you qualify. Does anyone know if P-EBT works the same way? We're heading on a road trip next weekend and stopping for fast food would be way easier than trying to find a grocery store every time the kids need to eat. The P-EBT info sheet doesn't mention anything about restaurants at all!

No, P-EBT and regular CalFresh EBT are different programs with different rules. P-EBT can only be used to purchase eligible food items at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other retailers that accept EBT - just like the food portion of regular CalFresh. The Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) is a special program that only applies to regular CalFresh benefits for households that have members who are elderly (60+), disabled, or homeless. P-EBT cards cannot be used at restaurants, even if your county participates in RMP.

•Ugh that's super inconvenient! But thanks for explaining it clearly. Guess I'll need to stock up on groceries before our trip.

•Yeah because thats NOT how the progam works!! P-EBT is ONLY for grocery stores!!! Why would they let people buy fast food with benefits meant to replace SCHOOL MEALS? School meals have nutrional requirements fast food doesnt meet!!

For your road trip, maybe buy some bread, lunch meat, fruits, etc. at a grocery store before you leave? That's what we do with our P-EBT benefits when traveling with the kids. Much healthier than fast food anyway!

•That's probably the smarter approach anyway. I was just hoping for convenience, but a cooler with snacks and sandwich stuff is a good idea. Thanks!

Just to provide some additional clarity: P-EBT (Pandemic EBT) was created specifically to replace the value of school meals when children couldn't access them during school closures and now continues for eligible students. The program is administered by different rules than regular CalFresh benefits. While regular CalFresh benefits can be used at approved restaurants through the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) in certain counties and for certain qualifying individuals (elderly, disabled, or homeless), P-EBT does not have this option. P-EBT cards can only be used at locations that accept EBT for grocery purchases. If you're planning a road trip, I'd recommend planning ahead by purchasing eligible food items at grocery stores that you can take with you. Items like bread, spreads, fruits, vegetables, granola bars, and other travel-friendly foods would be good options. You might also look up grocery stores along your route in case you need to restock during the trip.

•This is so helpful! I always get confused between all these EBT programs and what each one covers. My kids also got P-EBT cards but I wasn't sure exactly what we could buy with them. Now I know to just treat them like regular food EBT.

P-EBT is meant to replace SCHOOL MEALS not give kids fast food!!! School meals have nutrition requirements - certain amounts of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, etc. Fast food doesn't meet those standards at all! That's why they don't allow it.

•Not everyone has time to cook full nutritious meals every day, especially when traveling! No need to be judgmental about someone asking a simple question. It's a legitimate question since regular CalFresh can be used at some restaurants.

When I got my kids' P-EBT cards I tried calling the number on the back to ask questions but I just kept getting stuck in an automated system that never connected me to a person. So frustrating!

•I had the same issue trying to activate our P-EBT cards! I ended up using Claimyr to get through to a real person at the county office. It's a service that holds your place in the phone queue and calls you back when a human picks up. Saved me hours of waiting on hold! You can see how it works at claimyr.com or check out their demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 - way better than getting disconnected after waiting forever.

Have you downloaded the ConnectEBT app? It's super helpful for tracking your P-EBT balance and finding stores that accept it. Most grocery stores and even places like Walmart and Target accept P-EBT, so you should be able to find places along your route.

•I didn't know there was an app! That's actually really helpful for the trip, thanks for the tip. Will download it tonight.

Just remember that P-EBT balances expire after a certain period (I think it's something like 274 days from when they're issued) so make sure to use them before they disappear! I lost about $300 last year because I forgot about some funds on my kids' cards.

•Oh wow, I didn't realize they expire! Thanks for the heads up. We'll definitely use them before then.

For road trips with P-EBT, I've found it really helpful to plan grocery stops at larger chain stores like Safeway, Kroger, or even Walmart since they're usually easy to find along highways and accept EBT. You can grab things like individual bags of chips, crackers, string cheese, apples, bananas, and juice boxes - stuff that doesn't need refrigeration and is easy for kids to eat in the car. I also recommend checking if your route goes through any areas with WinCo or other budget grocery stores since you can stretch those P-EBT dollars further there. Safe travels!

•This is such great advice! I never thought about individual portions like string cheese and juice boxes - that's perfect for keeping the kids happy during long stretches of driving. WinCo is a great suggestion too, we have one near our starting point so I can stock up there. Really appreciate the practical tips from someone who's clearly done this before!
