Can I get a replacement EBT card in person without reporting it lost? Misplaced mine but still looking

So I've been looking for my CalFresh EBT card for a couple days now and can't find it anywhere. I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in my apartment since I remember using it at the grocery store last weekend. I'm planning to do a deep clean today and tomorrow so I might find it. The problem is I need to buy groceries THIS AFTERNOON. Is it possible to go to my county office and just pick up a new card without officially reporting the old one lost/stolen? I don't want to cancel my current card if I'm going to find it tomorrow! Has anyone done this before? Will they make me file a lost card report even if I just want a temporary replacement?

Unfortunately, you can't get a replacement EBT card without reporting your current one lost or stolen. When you request a new card (either in person or by phone), the system automatically deactivates your old card and transfers the remaining balance to the new one. This is a security feature to prevent unauthorized use if someone else finds your card. You have a few options: 1) Continue searching for your current card 2) Report it lost and get a replacement (takes about 5-7 business days by mail) 3) Request a replacement AND ask for an emergency in-person pickup at your county office (some counties offer same-day card pickup if you explain your situation) If you do find your old card after reporting it lost, it won't work anymore, so keep that in mind.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I didn't realize the balance would transfer automatically - that's good to know. I might just have to bite the bullet and report it lost. Do you know if Sacramento County offers the emergency in-person pickup option?

When I lost my card last month, I tried calling the EBT customer service line and was on hold FOREVER. I eventually got disconnected after waiting 45 minutes! So frustrated! Then I tried using that Claimyr service (claimyr.com) someone mentioned on another thread here - they actually got me through to a real person at the county office in less than 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 The worker was able to expedite my replacement card and I picked it up at the office the next day. Much better than waiting for mail delivery! Might be worth trying if you decide to report it lost and need that card ASAP.

Are you SURE they can do same-day replacements?? I've been told by THREE different workers that it's impossible to get a new card the same day because they don't print them at the offices anymore - they all come from some central facility now. I think Sacramento might be different though.

This is actually a common situation! Here's exactly what happens with EBT card replacements: 1. When you report your card lost/stolen, your old card is immediately deactivated 2. Your benefits remain safe in your account - nothing is lost 3. A new card is issued with the same PIN (unless you request a change) For fastest replacement: - Call the EBT Customer Service line (877-328-9677) to report it lost - Ask specifically if your county office offers emergency/expedited card pickup - If they do, request this option and explain your urgent need - Bring ID when you go to pick up the card If you absolutely cannot report it lost yet, your only option is to keep looking. There's no way to get a temporary or duplicate card while keeping your original active. The system simply doesn't allow it for security reasons.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll probably just report it lost then. I definitely need to buy groceries more than I need to keep searching. Would it be faster to call that number or just go directly to the office? I live about 15 minutes from my county office.

I don't think most people realize that when you lose your EBT card and get a replacement, they add it to your record in their system. If you have too many replacement cards (I think the limit is like 4 in a year), they can actually investigate you for potential fraud!!! Just something to keep in mind if you lose cards frequently. The system is designed to trap us!!

Update: I just spent 30 minutes searching my apartment one more time and FOUND MY CARD! It was inside a jacket pocket I hadn't worn in a week. Thank you all for the advice - I'm so relieved I don't have to go through the replacement process!

That's great news! Just a helpful tip for the future - take a photo of your EBT card (front and back) and save it somewhere secure on your phone. If you ever do need to report it lost, you'll have all the card information handy to make the process faster. Just make sure your phone has a secure lock screen since that information is sensitive.

So glad you found it! I was literally about to suggest checking jacket pockets - that's where mine always ends up too. For next time, I've started keeping my EBT card in the same spot in my wallet every single time I use it. Makes it way less stressful when you need groceries and can't remember where you put it!

That's such a good habit! I'm definitely going to start doing the same thing. I think half the stress of losing cards is just the panic of not knowing where you last put it. Having a designated spot would save so much time and worry. Thanks for the tip!
