CalFresh EBT card suddenly blocking cash withdrawals - ATM issues this month only

Hey everyone, I'm having an issue with my EBT card this month and not sure what's going on. I always withdraw my cash benefits right after midnight on deposit day to avoid getting skimmed (had that happen twice last year and it was a NIGHTMARE). But this month when I tried to take cash out from the ATM like usual, it's saying 'transaction not allowed' or something similar. I've tried 3 different ATMs thinking maybe it was just that location. Is anyone else experiencing this? Did something change with the cash withdrawal rules? My food stamps portion works fine for groceries, it's just the cash withdrawal that's blocked. Really need access to my money asap!

sounds like ur confusing calfresh with calworks. calfresh is just food benefits, u cant withdraw cash from it. calworks is the cash aid program

Oh wait really?? I thought they were all on the same card? I get both CalFresh and CalWORKs, and I've always been able to withdraw from the ATM before. Maybe something changed with my benefits this month?

The previous commenter is correct - CalFresh (food stamps) benefits can't be withdrawn as cash. That's only for CalWORKs cash aid. Since you mentioned both programs, it sounds like your CalWORKs benefits might not have been deposited yet or there could be an issue with your eligibility this month. A few things to check: 1. Verify your benefit deposit date - sometimes they change the schedule 2. Call the EBT customer service number on the back of your card to check your balance 3. Check if you received any notices in the mail about changes to your benefits 4. Make sure you submitted your quarterly SAR7 report on time if it was due recently If your food benefits are working normally but cash isn't available, that strongly suggests an issue specific to your CalWORKs benefits.

Thank you for explaining! I'm sure I submitted my SAR7 last month, but maybe there was a problem with it? I'll check my mail more carefully - honestly I've been tossing some of the envelopes without opening them thinking they were just general notices. That might have been a mistake.

this happened to me last year!! turned out my cash benefits got discontinued cuz i missed a mandatory employment appointment that i never even knew about!!! check your mail!!!

Just to add to what others are saying - if your CalWORKs benefits were discontinued but your CalFresh is still active, that would explain exactly what you're experiencing. The system treats them as separate benefits even though they're on the same card. You mentioned you "always" withdraw at midnight - which specific day of the month do your benefits normally arrive? Benefits are staggered throughout the month based on case numbers. If you usually get yours on the 1st but checked on a different date this month, that could also explain it.

Mine usually come on the 3rd, and I tried on the 3rd, 4th, and again today (the 5th). Still nothing showing for cash, but the food benefits loaded fine on the 3rd like normal. I'm going to call tomorrow and see what happened.

Ughhh the EXACT same thing happened to me in January!! I spent TWO DAYS trying to get through to my caseworker to figure out what happened. Turns out I missed some stupid employment verification form they sent that I didn't even know was important. They reinstated my benefits eventually but I had to go THREE WEEKS without my cash aid while they "processed" everything. The system is designed to make us fail I swear.

Getting through to CalWORKs workers is literally the worst part. I discovered this service called Claimyr recently that helped me skip the phone queues - saved me hours of frustration. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or just go to claimyr.com. They basically call for you and then connect you when they reach a real person. Used it twice now when I had issues with my benefits and it's been a lifesaver.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at the county office! Turns out they sent me an employment verification form last month that I needed to complete, but I never received it (or maybe I did and thought it was junk mail?). Because I didn't return it, they discontinued my CalWORKs but kept my CalFresh active. They're sending me a new form today, and I should be able to get my benefits reinstated once I submit it with my paystubs, but they said it might take up to 10 days to process. Not sure how I'm going to manage until then, but at least I know what happened now. Thanks everyone for your help figuring this out!

Glad you got answers! One thing to know is that if you get your verification documents in quickly, you should receive the full month's benefits even though it's already the 5th. CalWORKs benefits can be prorated from the date of eligibility within the month. Make sure to keep copies of everything you submit and get a receipt if you drop off documents in person.

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now. It's crazy how they expect us to know which mail is important when they send so many different notices! I'm learning to just open everything now. Hope your benefits get reinstated quickly - it's so stressful when this stuff happens.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely ask about that when I talk to them again. Every bit helps right now.

This is such a common issue unfortunately! I went through something similar last year where I missed a form buried in all the other mail they send. One tip that's helped me - I started taking photos of all my important documents before submitting them, and I always ask for a receipt or confirmation number when I drop things off. The county offices can be really slow to process things, but having proof you submitted everything on time can help if there are any disputes later. Also, if you're really tight on cash while waiting for reinstatement, some local food banks and community organizations might be able to help bridge the gap. Good luck getting everything sorted out!

That's really good advice about taking photos of documents! I wish I had thought of that earlier. I'm definitely going to start doing that from now on. Do you know if there's a specific way to ask for confirmation numbers when submitting things? I usually just drop stuff off at the front desk but never thought to ask for proof. Also, thanks for mentioning the food banks - I hadn't considered that option but it might really help while I'm waiting for everything to get sorted out.

Yes! When you drop off documents, always ask the front desk person to stamp your copy with the date and their initials, or ask for a receipt with a tracking number. Some offices have those little numbered tickets they can give you. If they say they don't do that, ask to speak to a supervisor - you have a right to proof of submission. I learned this the hard way after they "lost" my paperwork twice. Also, if you submit things online through the county portal, screenshot everything including the confirmation page. The system can be glitchy and submissions sometimes don't go through properly.

This whole thread is so helpful! I'm new to both CalFresh and CalWORKs and honestly had no idea they were separate programs on the same card. Reading about everyone's experiences with missed forms and documentation is eye-opening - it sounds like the system really doesn't make it easy to stay on top of everything. I'm going to start opening ALL my mail from the county now, even if it looks like junk. Connor, I hope your benefits get sorted out quickly! It's really stressful when you're counting on that money and it just doesn't show up. Thanks to everyone sharing their tips about keeping copies and getting receipts - I'm definitely going to remember that for when I need to submit my next round of paperwork.

Welcome to the programs! You're absolutely right that the system can be confusing at first. One thing that really helped me when I started was creating a simple calendar reminder for myself to check for mail every few days - I used to let it pile up and then panic when I realized something important might be in there. Also, if you haven't already, I'd recommend calling the EBT customer service line just to get familiar with how to check your balances and transaction history. The number is on the back of your card and it's really helpful for keeping track of when benefits are deposited and making sure everything looks normal each month. Good luck with everything!

This is such a valuable thread for anyone dealing with benefit issues! I'm glad you figured out what happened, Connor. Your experience really highlights how important it is to carefully review ALL mail from the county - I know it can feel overwhelming when they send so many different notices, but missing even one form can have such big consequences. For anyone reading this who might be in a similar situation, I'd also suggest setting up a simple filing system at home for benefit-related paperwork. I use just two folders - one for "action needed" and one for "completed/filed" - and it's helped me stay more organized. It's frustrating that we have to jump through so many hoops, but sharing experiences like this really helps the community navigate the system better. Hope your reinstatement goes smoothly!
