Been calling CalFresh EBT customer service for 3 weeks with no answer - desperate for help

I've been trying to get through to someone at CalFresh EBT customer service since my benefits suddenly stopped showing up on my card three weeks ago. I've called at different times (early morning, midday, right before closing) and I'm either stuck on hold for 2+ hours before getting disconnected or can't even get past the automated system. I've tried the main county number AND the EBT customer service line with the same results. I can't figure out what happened - I submitted my SAR7 on time last month and got a confirmation notice. My recertification isn't due until August. My family (me and two kids) depends on these benefits for food, and I'm at my wit's end. Has anyone successfully gotten through recently? Any tricks or specific times that work better? I'm getting desperate and the local office is an hour away by bus.

So frustrating! Have you tried going in person? I'm considering it but it's such a journey with the kids.

Try calling right at 8:00 AM when they open. I've found that's the best time to get through before the queue fills up. Also, make sure you're calling your specific county office rather than the general EBT customer service for benefit questions - the EBT line can only help with card issues, not with figuring out why your benefits stopped. When you call, have your case number and the date you submitted your SAR7 ready. If you received a confirmation for your SAR7, it's possible they needed additional verification documents but the notice got lost in the mail.

Thank you for the advice! I've tried calling at 8 AM twice but will keep trying. I didn't realize the EBT line couldn't help with benefit questions - that explains a lot. I'll make sure to have all my info ready next time I call.

I was in the same situation last month after my SAR7 processing. What worked for me was using Claimyr.com - it's a service that holds your place in the phone queue and calls you back when an actual human is on the line. Saved me hours of waiting and got me connected with a worker who fixed my case the same day. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 My issue was that they needed additional employment verification that I didn't know about. Once I got through to someone, it was resolved quickly, and my benefits were back-dated to cover the missed month.

It worked for me and two other people in my building who are on CalFresh. Definitely better than spending all day on hold or taking the bus to the office. Just make sure you have all your documents ready when they connect you.

Have you checked BenefitsCal to see if there's any notice about why your benefits stopped? Sometimes the notices show up there before you get them in the mail. Also, did your income change recently? If you went over the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) even temporarily, that could cause a discontinuance.

I did check BenefitsCal but there's nothing new there. My last notice was the SAR7 confirmation. My income is actually lower than normal right now because I had to take some time off for my daughter's medical appointments last month. I'm so confused about what could have happened.

I HATE the phone system SO MUCH!!!! Been on calfrsh for 3 years and its always a nightmare. Once i waited 4 HOURS and got disconnected right when someone answered. I started crying right there at work. The whole system is designed to make us give up i swear.

This happened to me earlier this year - turns out my identity verification had expired and they needed new documents. The notice got sent to my old address even though I'd updated it in the system. So annoying. I'd recommend: 1. If possible, go in person with ALL your documents (ID, income proof, bills, everything) 2. Try calling exactly at 8:00am Monday morning 3. Check with your mail carrier - sometimes notices get lost 4. Look at your last approval notice to see if there was any special condition mentioned Good luck! The system is seriously broken but don't give up - your family needs those benefits.

Thank you for the detailed advice! I never thought about the identity verification expiring. I'll gather all my documents and try again Monday morning at 8am sharp. If that doesn't work, I'll make the trip to the office.

Another thing to consider is that sometimes benefit discontinuances happen when there's a mismatch between your reported household members and what the system shows. Did you have any changes in your household recently? Also, given that you mentioned you had to take time off for medical appointments, make sure to document that if your income verification is requested - temporary decreases in income need to be explained to avoid confusion.

No changes in household members, still just me and my two kids. But that's good to know about documenting the income change! I'll gather my time-off slips just in case. This is all so complicated.

Really? Thank you for letting me know! I'm going to try calling one more time in the morning, but if that doesn't work I'll definitely check it out. I just need to get this resolved before we run out of food completely.

One more thing - if all else fails, contact your county Board of Supervisors office and explain your situation. They can sometimes intervene when there are serious barriers to accessing benefits. I had a case worker contact me within 24 hours after I reached out to my Supervisor's office last year during a similar situation. Just explain that your family is at risk of food insecurity because you can't reach anyone to resolve your CalFresh issue.

That's really good to know! I'll keep that as a last resort if I can't get through by the end of this week. Thank you!
