UCC 1106 Error Code Killing My Filing - Anyone Else Hit This?
Ugh, this is driving me crazy. I've been trying to file a UCC-1 for three days now and keep getting hit with error code 1106. The debtor name is spelled correctly (I've triple-checked it against the articles of incorporation), all the collateral descriptions are standard boilerplate, and I'm using the exact format that worked fine last month on a different filing. The SOS portal just keeps rejecting it with this cryptic 1106 code and no real explanation. Has anyone else run into this specific error? I'm starting to wonder if there's some new validation rule they implemented that isn't documented anywhere. This is for a $2.8M equipment loan and we're supposed to close tomorrow morning. Getting pretty desperate here.

Error 1106 usually means there's a character encoding issue with one of your text fields. Are you copying and pasting the debtor name from a PDF or Word doc? Sometimes hidden characters get embedded that the system can't process.

•I did copy from the incorporation docs initially but then retyped everything manually. Still getting the same error.

•Try clearing your browser cache completely. I've seen that fix weird validation errors before.

Had the exact same thing happen two weeks ago! Turned out to be a single apostrophe in the debtor name that the system couldn't handle. Even though it displayed fine on my screen, the backend validation was choking on it.

•No apostrophes in this one, but good to know that's a potential issue. The debtor name is pretty straightforward - 'Midwest Manufacturing Solutions LLC

•Hmm, that should be fine. What about the address fields? Sometimes ZIP+4 codes cause problems if they're formatted wrong.

•Using standard 5-digit ZIP. Address is clean.

This might sound crazy but I had a similar issue last month and it turned out I had an extra space at the end of one of my fields. The portal didn't trim whitespace automatically like it used to. Had to manually delete every trailing space.

•Worth trying. I'll go through every field character by character.

•The new portal is so finicky about formatting. Used to be much more forgiving.

I've been dealing with these kinds of filing inconsistencies for months. After getting burned on three different deals, I started using Certana.ai's document verification tool. You just upload your UCC-1 PDF and it instantly flags any potential issues before you even submit to the SOS. Would have saved me hours of frustration and resubmissions.

•Never heard of that but willing to try anything at this point. Does it specifically check for error codes like 1106?

•It catches the common formatting issues that trigger those error codes. Plus it cross-references against the debtor's charter documents to make sure names match exactly.

•That actually sounds useful for avoiding these kinds of last-minute filing disasters.

Check if you're using any special characters in the collateral description. Even standard punctuation can sometimes cause validation errors depending on how the system interprets it.

•Collateral description is pretty basic - 'All equipment, machinery, and fixtures now owned or hereafter acquired.' Nothing fancy.

•That should be fine. What about the secured party information? Any issues there?

1106 errors are the worst because they're so vague. I've had them caused by everything from browser compatibility issues to server timeouts that get misreported as validation errors.

•I've tried Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Same error on all three.

•That rules out browser issues. Might be worth calling the SOS help desk directly if you haven't already.

•Good luck getting through to them. I was on hold for 2 hours yesterday.

Just throwing this out there - are you filing in the correct state? I know it sounds obvious but I once spent half a day troubleshooting a filing error only to realize I was in the wrong state's portal.

Nina Fitzgerald
•Definitely in the right state portal. This is where we've filed dozens of UCC-1s before.

•Had to ask! The number of times I've seen that mistake...

One more idea - try creating a completely fresh filing from scratch instead of copying from a previous template. Sometimes the portal gets confused by form data that was created under older system versions.

Nina Fitzgerald
•That's actually a really good point. I did start with a template from last month's filing.

•Yeah, I've seen that cause weird validation issues. Start completely fresh and type everything in manually.

•This is why I always start from a blank form. Templates can carry over invisible formatting problems.

ARGH! I hate these error codes so much. The whole system is garbage and they never give you enough information to actually fix the problem. Sorry, not helpful but I feel your pain.

•I appreciate the sympathy! This is exactly why I'm so frustrated.

•The SOS portal really is terrible. Way too many undocumented quirks and limitations.

Update please! Did you get it resolved? I'm bookmarking this thread in case I run into the same issue.

•Still working on it. Trying the fresh form approach now. Will update once I get it sorted.

•Following this too. Error 1106 has been popping up more frequently lately.

I had a similar situation where I ended up using that Certana tool someone mentioned earlier. Uploaded my problem filing and it immediately flagged a hidden character issue in the debtor address field that I never would have found manually. Saved my closing.

•That's exactly the kind of issue I'm probably dealing with. Definitely going to try that tool.

•It's worth a shot. The document verification caught things I missed even after going through everything manually.

Final thought - if nothing else works, you might need to file a paper UCC-1 as a backup. I know it's old school but it sometimes works when the electronic system is being problematic.

•That's my nuclear option. Really hoping to avoid paper filing if possible.

•Totally understand. Electronic is so much faster when it actually works.

•Paper filing saved me once when I had a similar mysterious error code. Sometimes you just have to work around the system.
