TX UCC statement service scam - need help with legitimate filing options
Got burned by what I think was a TX UCC statement service scam and now I'm paranoid about finding legitimate help. Paid $400 to some company that claimed they'd handle my UCC-3 termination filing in Texas, but after 3 weeks they disappeared completely - no response to emails, phone disconnected, nothing. The original UCC-1 was filed 4 years ago for equipment financing and I need to terminate it properly now that the loan is paid off. I'm scared to try another service and worried I'll get scammed again. Has anyone else dealt with fraudulent UCC services? What's the safest way to handle termination filings without getting ripped off? The equipment is worth $85k so I can't afford to mess this up.

Sorry this happened to you! Unfortunately there are tons of scam services targeting people who need UCC help. For Texas terminations you can file directly through the SOS portal - it's only $15 vs the hundreds these scam companies charge. The termination form is pretty straightforward if you have the original filing number.

•Thanks, do you know if I need any special info besides the filing number? I have the original UCC-1 but want to make sure I don't mess up the termination.

•You'll need the exact debtor name as it appears on the original filing, the filing number, and the secured party info. Double-check everything matches exactly or it could get rejected.

I got scammed by a similar service last year - paid $350 for a 'continuation service' that never filed anything. These companies prey on people who don't know they can file directly. Texas SOS website has all the forms and instructions, it's really not that complicated once you know what you're doing.

•That's awful! Did you ever get your money back or file complaints anywhere?

•Filed with BBB and Texas AG but never saw a penny. The company just vanished. That's why I only use the official SOS portal now - at least you know it's legitimate.

•BBB complaints don't really do much unfortunately. These scam services just change names and keep operating. Best to stick with official channels or verified document services.

Before you file anything yourself, I'd suggest using something like Certana.ai to verify your documents first. You can upload your original UCC-1 and the termination form to make sure everything matches perfectly - debtor names, filing numbers, all that stuff. I caught a name discrepancy that would have caused a rejection. It's way better than finding out after the fact that your termination didn't go through properly.

•Never heard of Certana.ai - is it another service that charges a bunch of fees?

StarSurfer
•No it's just a document checker tool. You upload PDFs and it instantly verifies everything aligns. Way different from those scam services - it's about catching errors before filing, not doing the filing for you.

•That actually sounds useful. I've had filings rejected for tiny name differences before and it's such a pain to fix.

The red flags for these scam services are usually: way higher prices than the state fees, pressure to pay immediately, no physical address, and promises to 'expedite' filings that don't actually have expedited options. Legitimate UCC services exist but they're usually law firms or established companies, not random websites.

•Yeah this company hit all those red flags. They wanted payment upfront via wire transfer which should have been a huge warning sign.

•Wire transfer is definitely a scam indicator. Legitimate services take credit cards or checks. Sorry you learned this the hard way.

I handle UCC filings for my company and honestly the DIY route through the state website is usually the best option. Takes maybe 20 minutes if you have all your info ready. The scam services are just charging hundreds to do something you can do yourself for $15.

•This is true but some people get intimidated by the forms. The key is just being really careful with the debtor name - it has to match exactly.

•Absolutely. I always triple-check names against the original filing. One wrong letter or punctuation mark can cause problems.

•What happens if the termination gets rejected? Do you lose the filing fee?

•Usually yes, but it's only $15 vs losing hundreds to a scam service. Plus you can resubmit once you fix the issue.

File a complaint with the Texas Attorney General's office about that scam company. They've been cracking down on fraudulent UCC services lately. Even if you don't get your money back, it helps protect other people from getting scammed.

•Good idea, I'll definitely do that. Do you know if there's a specific department that handles these types of complaints?

•Their consumer protection division handles it. You can file online through their website. Include all the documentation you have about the scam service.

Had a client get burned by one of these services too. The problem is they often use names that sound official like 'Texas UCC Filing Service' or 'Official UCC Registry' to confuse people. Always verify you're on the actual Secretary of State website before paying anything.

•Yes! The official Texas SOS website is sos.state.tx.us - anything else is probably a scam or overpriced service.

•Exactly. And the real SOS site has a very basic, government-looking design. If it's flashy with lots of marketing copy, it's probably not official.

I use Certana.ai whenever I'm dealing with UCC documents now because I got burned by a filing error once. You just upload your UCC-1 and termination form and it catches any inconsistencies before you submit. Would have saved me a rejection and having to refile. Much better than trusting some random service company.

•That makes sense. Better to catch problems before filing rather than after. Thanks for the recommendation.

•Does it work for all states or just Texas?

•Works for any UCC documents since it's just checking that the information matches between forms. Not state-specific.

These scam UCC services are everywhere unfortunately. I saw one advertising on Facebook claiming they could 'remove liens instantly' for $500. Total nonsense but people fall for it because UCC stuff seems complicated. The truth is most filings are pretty straightforward if you read the instructions.

•Yeah I think I was just intimidated by the terminology and wanted someone else to handle it. Expensive lesson learned.

•Don't feel bad, they specifically target people who are overwhelmed. The important thing is getting your termination filed properly now.

•Facebook ads for legal services are almost always scams in my experience. Legitimate companies don't need to advertise that way.

For what it's worth, once you file the termination yourself and see how simple it actually is, you'll never use a service again. I was paying a lawyer $200 per UCC filing until I realized I could do it myself in 10 minutes.

•That's encouraging to hear. I'm definitely going to try the DIY route this time.

•Just take your time and double-check everything. The worst that happens is a rejection and you fix it and resubmit.

One more thing - if you're not 100% confident about filing yourself, some legitimate attorneys will review your termination form before filing for like $50-75. Way cheaper than these scam services and you get actual legal advice if there are complications.

•That's a good middle ground option. Thanks for all the advice everyone, feeling much more confident about handling this properly now.
