When does the 2025-2026 FAFSA become available? Junior planning ahead

My daughter is wrapping up her junior year and I'm trying to get ahead of this FAFSA nightmare I keep hearing about. When exactly does the 2025-2026 FAFSA application become available? I've heard conflicting things - some say October, others December. Is there any advantage to submitting right when it opens? Also, we have a somewhat complicated tax situation (self-employed + rental property income) - should I start gathering documents now? Any tips from parents who've been through this recently? I'd like to avoid the technical glitches everyone complained about this year!

The 2025-26 FAFSA wil open December 1st most likely. They pushed it back from October after all the problems this year. Start getting your 2023 tax info together now cuz thats what they'll use (prior-prior year). My advice - wait at least 2 weeks after it opens to avoid the initial crashes! Good luck lol

Thanks! December 1st gives us plenty of time. Is there a disadvantage to waiting those two weeks? I've heard some schools have priority deadlines or limited aid.

As someone who works in college financial aid, I can tell you that the 2025-2026 FAFSA is scheduled to open December 1, 2024. This is the new permanent start date as part of the FAFSA Simplification Act. Regarding your tax situation, you'll need: 2023 tax returns, Schedule C for self-employment, Schedule E for rental properties, W-2s, and documentation of any untaxed income. While there's no significant advantage to submitting on day one (despite what many believe), you should aim to submit by your colleges' priority deadlines - these vary by institution but usually fall between January and March. Missing these can reduce aid eligibility, especially for institutional scholarships and grants.

This is incredibly helpful! Do we need to include information about the rental property's value or just the income it generates? And should my daughter create her FSA ID now or wait until closer to December?

You'll only need to report the income (and losses) from the rental property, not its value. The SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation focuses on income rather than assets for most applicants. And yes, I recommend creating FSA IDs for both you and your daughter now - they take 1-3 days to fully activate, and having them ready will save you headaches in December. Just store the credentials somewhere secure since you won't use them for several months.

am i the only one who thinks its RIDICULOUS they moved it to december?? colleges still have the same deadlines but we get less time to figure out this mess. took me 3 tries to even get thru the system this year, by then my kids missed some scholarship deadlines. the whole thing is broken!!

I felt the same way initially, but most colleges adapted their financial aid deadlines in response to the FAFSA delays. The December 1 opening actually helps prevent the technical issues we saw with the rushed October launch. They needed more testing time.

maybe for some schools but my sons college didnt change ANYTHING and he almost lost his housing scholarship. had to call financial aid office like 9 times and nobody ever answered!! waste of my time and money.

I'm going through this process right now with my senior. Let me tell you, getting the FSA IDs set up was a nightmare - it took us three tries because they couldn't verify my identity and then my daughter's phone number wasn't accepting the verification text. When we finally got through, the system logged us out mid-application and we had to start over. I'm still waiting for our SAI calculation and it's been over 3 weeks. If I were you, I'd create the FSA IDs NOW while you're not under time pressure, and save all the login info somewhere safe.

Yikes! That's exactly what I'm hoping to avoid. We'll definitely set up the FSA IDs early. Did you have any issues with the contributor section? My ex-husband will need to provide information too.

Oh the contributor part was another headache! My ex didn't get the email invitation for 5 days, then it went to his spam folder. When he finally started his section, he didn't have his tax info ready and the system timed him out. Then we couldn't figure out how to send him another invitation. We ended up sitting together at Starbucks with all our paperwork just to get it done. Definitely give your ex a heads-up months in advance!

we just finished fafsa this year and my biggest advice is DONT WAIT! even with the december start date, do it asap. we waited until february and my sons SAI was way higher than we expected but by then many schools had already given out merit aid. also the IRS data retrieval tool wasnt working for us so we had to enter everything manually which took forever!

That's good to know - sounds like early January might be the sweet spot after they work out initial bugs but before aid starts running out. Did you appeal your SAI calculation?

After spending literal HOURS trying to get through to someone at Federal Student Aid about our incorrect SAI calculation, I finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in 10 minutes. Saved me days of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. I wish I'd known about this service months ago when we were having FSA ID verification problems. Just passing this along since you mentioned wanting to avoid technical glitches!

I've never heard of this, but I'm bookmarking it just in case. Those wait times sound horrible. Was it difficult to use?

Super easy! I was skeptical at first but it worked exactly as advertised. The agent I spoke with was able to help fix our SAI calculation issue. Definitely keep it as a backup option if you run into problems - December will be extremely busy with everyone trying to submit at once.

dont worry about the fafsa deadline as much as CSS Profile if ur kid is applying to private schools! That one opens in October and many privates wont even look at financial aid without it. We missed yale's early css deadline and my daughter got waitlisted even with perfect grades. Now we're scrambling to cover costs that couldve been covered by institutional aid

Oh! I hadn't even considered the CSS Profile. She is looking at a few private schools. Is that a completely separate application with different deadlines?

Yes, the CSS Profile is entirely separate from FAFSA and primarily used by private colleges. It opens October 1st and has much more detailed questions about assets, home equity, business values, etc. It also costs $25 for the first school and $16 for each additional school (fee waivers available for eligible families). Each private institution sets their own CSS deadlines, often earlier than their FAFSA deadlines. Check each school's financial aid website for specific dates.

Since you mentioned having rental property income, make sure you understand how that will be reported on the FAFSA. For the 2025-2026 application, you'll need to report your 2023 tax information. Rental property income appears on Schedule E, and while the income is considered, the actual value of the property isn't directly reported on the FAFSA anymore under the simplified formula. However, business equity is still reportable if you have more than 100 employees in your self-employment business. The FAFSA Simplification reduced asset reporting requirements for many families, but those with more complex financial situations should definitely prepare documentation well in advance.

That's a relief about the property value! Our rental is small (just a duplex) and my business is just me as a consultant. It sounds like our assets won't impact the calculation as much as I feared.

Has anyone had issues with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool? It never worked for us this year, kept saying our information didn't match their records even though we were looking right at our tax return while entering the info. Is there a trick to making it work? Because manually entering all the tax information was a nightmare.

make sure ur address matches EXACTLY whats on ur tax return. even an abbreviation like st vs street can mess it up. Also cant use it if u filed married separate or amended your return
