Multiple college deposits due 5/15 but FAFSA aid package delayed - pay all deposits?
I'm seriously panicking about our financial aid situation with FAFSA. My daughter got accepted to three schools - two require a decision by May 15th (this Wednesday!) and the third has a June 1st deadline. The problem is we've only received one financial aid package so far from one of the May 15th schools. The second May 15th deadline school actually told us directly that their financial aid office WON'T have a package ready before the deadline! How are we supposed to make an informed decision? Should we just put down deposits at all three schools ($500-750 each) to keep our options open until we can compare all the aid packages? Is that even allowed? Will we lose the deposits if we eventually decline? This whole system seems designed to fail families who need financial aid the most.

yes u can put deposits at all of them... thats what we did last yr. its expensive but worth the peace of mind. you'll lose the deposits at the schools u dont choose tho, colleges know ppl do this and thats why they make the deposits non-refundable lol

•Thanks for confirming. Ugh, that's such a financial hit though. Almost $2000 in deposits when we're already stressed about paying for college. Did you at least get all your aid packages before making the final decision?

This is, unfortunately, a common problem with the financial aid system. You have several options: 1. Call the financial aid offices directly and explain your situation. Some schools will offer a deadline extension if you explain that you're waiting on aid packages to make an informed decision. 2. Yes, you can place deposits at multiple schools, but be aware most are non-refundable. 3. If one school is clearly your daughter's top choice but you're waiting on their aid package, you might consider only putting a deposit there and requesting an extension from the others. The schools with May 15 deadlines should be more accommodating since they haven't provided complete information. Document all communications in case there are issues later.

•I've been trying to call the financial aid office at the second school for THREE DAYS and keep getting voicemail. It's so frustrating! They know their deadline is in 2 days but nobody answers the phone. Do you think an email would work instead for requesting the extension?

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to the financial aid office? I was in a similar situation last year and spent days trying to reach someone. A friend recommended claimyr.com and they got me connected to a live person at the financial aid office in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ I was able to get an extension on my deposit deadline after explaining my situation. Most schools understand this dilemma and will work with you if you can actually reach a human.

•I've never heard of this service before. Does it really work? I'm desperate at this point so willing to try anything that might help us talk to an actual person.

•Yes, it does work! The service connects you with an actual financial aid representative, not just the general school switchboard. When I finally got through, I explained that I couldn't make an informed decision without knowing my full aid package, and they granted me a 10-day extension.

THIS IS WHY THE WHOLE COLLEGE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!! They expect families to commit THOUSANDS of dollars before even telling you what it will cost?? My son went through this last year and we ended up putting deposits at 2 schools ($1400 down the drain) because his top choice didn't send the financial aid letter until JUNE even though the deposit was due in May! The system is DESIGNED to squeeze more money out of families who are already struggling to afford college!!!

•Totally agree! Same thing happened to my niece. Schools do this on purpose so you can't compare offers. We lost $500 on a deposit too.

i work in college admissions (not financial aid tho) and this happens ALL THE TIME. you can totally request an extension, but do it in writing (email) so you have proof. call first using that service someone mentioned if you can't get through, then follow up with email summarizing the call. most schools will give you at least a week extension if you explain you're waiting on financial aid info. and YES, this system is totally unfair but extensions are pretty routine tbh.

•Thank you for the insider perspective! I finally got through to someone at the financial aid office today and they granted us a 2-week extension. They were actually really understanding once I explained we were waiting on the SAI and aid package. Such a relief!

my daughter had this same issue but with like 5 SCHOOLS lol. what we did was put deposit at her top 2 choices only, then when all the aid packages finally came in we just lost one deposit. cheaper than paying all 5. you could also try askin the june 1 deadline school if they can get u the package earlier so u can decide on the may 15 schools?

•Smart! Wish we'd thought of that approach.

Just to follow up - I recommend you check if any of these schools subscribe to the National Candidates Reply Date Agreement. If they do, they're supposed to give you until May 1 to decide AND provide your complete financial aid package well before that. The fact that a school told you outright they won't have aid info before their own deadline is concerning and potentially against this agreement. You have legitimate grounds to request an extension based on this alone.

•Update: I got extensions from both May 15 schools! The first one gave us until May 25 and the second until May 29. The second school's financial aid office apologized for the delay and said they're overwhelmed with the new FAFSA system this year. At least now we'll be able to compare all three offers before making a decision. Thanks for all the advice everyone!
