FAFSA shows 'processed' but SAI can't be calculated - no errors listed anywhere?

I'm totally stuck with my daughter's FAFSA application and freaking out! The status shows as 'processed successfully' but then says her SAI (Student Aid Index) cannot be calculated due to 'missing or conflicting information.' It specifically says she's ineligible for Pell Grants or any federal loans because of this. When we go to the Next Steps section on the student summary page, it says 'we can't successfully process your FAFSA due to the errors listed on this page. Review the list of errors for instructions.' BUT THERE ARE NO ERRORS LISTED ANYWHERE! We've checked every section multiple times. Has anyone else encountered this weird glitch? Did you find a solution? The deadline for her college is in 3 weeks and I'm starting to panic.

I had the exact same issue with my son's application last week! It's super frustrating. After some digging, I found that there was an issue with how our tax information was transferred from the IRS. Even though it said it transferred successfully, something was mismatched. Try going back to the financial information section and manually entering your tax data instead of using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. That fixed it for us.

Thank you! That's really helpful. Did you have to wait long for it to be reprocessed after you manually entered the tax info?

This is a common issue with the 2025-2026 FAFSA. The system sometimes flags a conflict even when there isn't one visible to you. There are actually several potential causes: 1. Tax information mismatch - as mentioned, the IRS Data Retrieval Tool sometimes creates conflicts 2. Name/SSN mismatch - Make sure your daughter's name exactly matches her Social Security card 3. Citizenship verification issue - The system might be trying to verify citizenship status 4. Household information conflicts - Check that household size and number in college makes sense The fastest way to resolve this is to call Federal Student Aid directly at 1-800-433-3243. Ask specifically for a "detailed error report" which shows errors not visible on the website. They can tell you exactly what's causing the SAI calculation failure.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I called the number you provided but couldn't get through after waiting for 40 minutes. Will try again tomorrow morning.

I don't think calling them helps. I've been trying for 2 weeks and nobody ever picks up. The whole system is broken this year with all these new changes!

After dealing with a similar issue, I discovered that Claimyr.com helped me reach an actual FSA agent in under 5 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. They basically navigate the phone system for you and call you back when there's an agent on the line. Saved me so much frustration when I had this exact "processed but no SAI" problem. You can see how it works in their demo video here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent was able to see all the hidden errors that weren't displaying on my account and walked me through fixing them one by one.

That sounds really helpful, I'll check it out! Did they actually see errors that weren't showing up on your account?

Yes! The agent found three "system-level flags" on my application that weren't visible to me. One was related to an inconsistency between my reported income and what the IRS had on file (even though I used the data retrieval tool). The second was because my daughter's social security number had a verification issue, and the third was because I had accidentally reported my child as both a dependent on my taxes AND independent on the FAFSA. None of these showed up as errors in my portal.

This same EXACT thing happened with my FAFSA too!! Except mine was actually because I accidentally clicked that I was going to file a tax extension, but then also entered tax information. So the system was confused because I indicated I hadn't filed yet but also provided filing data. The stupid part is that there was NO WAY to see this conflict on the website!!! I had to call FSA three different times before I got someone who actually knew what they were doing and could find the hidden error. Maybe check if you have any conflicting answers like that?

That's really interesting... I wonder if we checked a wrong box somewhere. We'll definitely go through and review everything again. Did you have to wait long for your SAI to be calculated after fixing the issue?

It took about 4 days for the system to recalculate my SAI after fixing the problem. But once it did, everything went through fine and I got my aid package a week later. Don't give up!

its a computer glitch happens all the time the fafsa website is terrible. just submit a correction even if you dont change anything. that usually kicks the system into fixing itself

This isn't always the best approach. Making a random correction can sometimes create new conflicts or reset your place in the processing queue. It's better to identify the specific issue first.

Update: I finally got through to FSA this morning! The agent found the problem - apparently when I entered my daughter's high school, the system didn't properly record the completion date, so it thought she hadn't finished high school yet. The agent fixed it directly and said our SAI should be calculated within 3-5 business days. Thank you all for your help and suggestions!

That's great news! This is exactly why speaking with an agent directly is so important - they can see the "behind the scenes" errors that don't display on the student portal. Glad you got it resolved before your deadline.

Did anyone else notice that the whole FAFSA system has been a complete disaster since they "simplified" it? My cousin's daughter had her application stuck for MONTHS and almost lost her scholarship. The government can't do anything right!

While there have definitely been challenges with the new system, they are working through the issues. Many students are successfully receiving their aid packages. Let's try to focus on helping OP with their specific problem rather than general complaints.

I'm so glad you were able to get this resolved! Your situation is exactly why I always recommend keeping detailed notes about every step of the FAFSA process. For anyone else reading this thread who might be dealing with similar issues, here are some additional tips that have helped me and my friends: 1. Screenshot everything - your summary pages, error messages (or lack thereof), and any confirmation numbers 2. Try accessing your FAFSA at different times of day - sometimes the system shows different information during off-peak hours 3. If you're a parent contributor, make sure you're logged into the correct account when reviewing information 4. Double-check that your FSA ID is properly linked to your Social Security number The high school completion date issue you experienced is actually more common than people realize. I've seen it happen when students transfer schools or do dual enrollment. It's frustrating that these "hidden" errors aren't visible to us, but at least there's usually a solution once you can get through to someone who knows the system well enough to find them. Hope your daughter gets her aid package soon and everything works out for her college plans!
