FAFSA shows incomplete status but doesn't specify what's missing - urgent help needed

I'm about to pull my hair out trying to complete my daughter's FAFSA for the 2025-26 year! The status keeps showing as 'incomplete' but there's literally NOTHING telling me what section is missing. I've gone through every single tab multiple times, double-checked all parent financial info, verified her SSN, and even re-uploaded our tax documents. When I click 'submit,' it just returns to the dashboard with the incomplete status. We're up against her college's priority deadline next week and I'm seriously panicking. Has anyone else run into this glitch? Any Atlanta-based financial aid advisors who could help me figure this out today? This is her shot at significant aid packages and I'm terrified we'll miss out because of some technical error.

have u made sure u clicked all the check boxes? my son's fafsa showed incomplete cuz i didnt check some box at the bottom of the signature page lol. also check the student section cuz sometimes they need to sign something too

Thanks for replying! Yes, I've checked and double-checked all the signature boxes for both of us. It shows both signatures as complete in the checklist. That's what's driving me crazy - everything looks complete according to the checklist, but it still won't let me submit!

Thank you for these detailed suggestions! I'm going to try the browser switch right now - we've been using Safari. And I'll double-check for yellow triangles. I'm pretty sure all sections have green checkmarks, but I'll go through them one more time. My daughter did complete her signature section on her login, but maybe there's something else in her section that needs attention.

Have you tried logging in from your daughter's account to make sure everything shows complete on her end? Sometimes there's a disconnect between what parents see and what students see. My daughter's FAFSA had this exact issue last month.

We actually had to abandon the application and start a completely new one. It was annoying but worked. Somehow the original application had gotten corrupted in the system.

I bet it's the contributor section!!! This happened to me with my son's FAFSA. Even though I'm the only parent contributing financial info, there's a specific spot where you have to mark any other parents/guardians as NOT contributing by actually selecting them and choosing "not contributing" rather than just leaving them off. It's super confusing and poorly designed. Look for the contributor section and make sure every parent/guardian is either marked as contributing (with all info filled out) or specifically marked as not contributing.

OMG I think you might be right! Her dad and I are divorced and I didn't specifically mark him as 'not contributing' - I just didn't add him at all. I'm going to check that section right now. Thank you!!!

If you're still having trouble after checking all the suggestions here, it might be worth calling Federal Student Aid directly. Unfortunately, their call center is notoriously difficult to get through to, with wait times often exceeding 2-3 hours this time of year. I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to a FAFSA agent in about 20 minutes instead of the 2+ hours I was facing. I second this. I used to work in a financial aid office, and sometimes the ONLY way to resolve these mysterious "incomplete" statuses is to have a Federal Student Aid agent look directly at your file in their system. They can see things we can't see in the interface.

This new FAFSA system is complete garbage!!! I had to submit my son's application THREE TIMES before it went through. And the worst part? No explanation for what was wrong, just like you're experiencing. The Department of Education should be ashamed of themselves for rolling out such a broken system when millions of students' futures depend on it. In my case, it turned out to be something ridiculous - the system didn't like that I had included a decimal point in our income numbers. Like seriously??? That's what held up my son's entire financial future? An extra period?

UPDATE: I FIXED IT!!! It was exactly what @user7 suggested - the contributor section! Even though my ex-husband isn't financially involved in my daughter's education, I had to specifically add him as a parent and then mark him as "not contributing" rather than just leaving him off entirely. What's infuriating is that there was ZERO indication this was the problem. No error message, no highlighted section, nothing. Just a vague "incomplete" status. For anyone facing this same issue - check your contributor section and make sure ALL parents/guardians (even uninvolved ones) are specifically accounted for one way or another.
