FAFSA premature submission issue - dad submitted parent section before I completed my student info
My dad got overeager and hit submit on the parent section of our FAFSA before I finished adding my financial info! I had my checking/savings entered but was waiting on getting my investment account numbers from my grandparents (they set up some fund when I was born). Now the system says the form is submitted and I can't access it to enter the remaining info. Is our application totally messed up now? Do we have to wait until it processes before we can correct it? I'm panicking because scholarship deadlines are coming up soon and I need my FAFSA processed! Has anyone dealt with this kind of premature submission problem?

•What did you end up doing? Were you able to fix it?

Don't panic! You can fix this. The FAFSA isn't truly "submitted" until both the parent and student sections are completed. What you're experiencing is that the parent contribution section is locked in, but the application itself is still waiting for your portion. Log back in with YOUR FSA ID (not your dad's), and you should be able to continue with your section. The status might appear confusing, but it's actually still in progress.

•I tried that but it keeps saying "Form Status: Submitted" when I log in with my FSA ID. There's no obvious way to continue adding information. Should I be looking somewhere specific?

the whole fafsa system is a NIGHTMARE this year!!!! i had sooo many problems with the parent contribution part becuz my parents are divorced and neither one wanted to do it. then when my mom FINALLY did it the website crashed and we lost everything!!!!! had to start all over! the dept of education should be ASHAMED of themselves for this garbage system!!!!!

This is a common issue with the new FAFSA system. If it shows as "submitted" but you know information is missing, you'll need to wait 3-5 business days for initial processing to complete. After that, you can make corrections to the form. Don't worry too much - for scholarship purposes, many schools will accept a processed FAFSA even if corrections are pending. Just make sure to submit those corrections as soon as the system allows you to. Also, note that while checking/savings accounts must be reported, not all investment accounts require reporting depending on the type. If it's an education-specific account like a 529 plan, it's reported in a different section than general investments.

•Thank you! That's really helpful. I'm not sure what kind of account my grandparents set up, but I'll find out. Do you know if there's any way to speed up the initial processing? I'm worried about my scholarship deadline.

If you're desperate to talk to someone at Federal Student Aid about this, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was stuck in a similar situation last month and spent hours trying to get through the normal phone line with no luck. Claimyr got me connected to an actual FSA agent in about 15 minutes who fixed my issue on the spot. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

•Thanks for the tip! I'll try the normal channels first, but if I can't get through I might try this. Did they say if this is a common problem?

•Yeah, the agent I spoke with said they get calls about premature submissions all the time. Apparently lots of parents don't realize the student section needs to be completed too. The agent manually flagged my application for review which sped things up.

I had this EXACT problem when filing my FAFSA last fall. Once your application shows as "submitted" but incomplete, you have two options: 1. Wait for processing (typically 3-7 days) then make corrections - this is the standard approach 2. Call Federal Student Aid directly at 1-800-433-3243 and explain the situation. Sometimes they can unlock just your portion for completion without waiting for processing. For option 2, call early in the morning (right when they open) for shortest wait times. Have your FSA ID and confirmation number ready. Be prepared to verify your identity. Regarding your scholarship deadlines - most institutions understand FAFSA processing issues. Email your school's financial aid office explaining the situation. Many will accept confirmation of FAFSA submission with a note that corrections are pending. Just be proactive about communicating! Also worth noting: If your grandparents' investment is a 529 plan or Coverdell ESA in your parents' name, it gets reported as a parent asset, not yours.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll try calling them tomorrow morning. I've also emailed my school's financial aid office explaining the situation. My grandparents said it's some kind of trust fund, not a 529, so I think I do need to report it.

my financial aid advisor said that the SAI calculation doesnt even look at student investments the same way it looks at parent investments so maybe it wont make much difference anyway?

•That's partially true. Student-owned assets are assessed at 20% for SAI calculations, while parent-owned assets are assessed at a maximum of 5.64%. But student assets DO count, and for larger amounts, it can significantly impact aid eligibility. That's why it's important to report everything correctly.

UPDATE: I got through to Federal Student Aid this morning! The agent was super helpful and explained that my dad actually only completed his PORTION of the parent section, not the entire submission. I was able to log back in with my FSA ID and complete my section. Everything's submitted properly now! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

•That's great news! Glad you got it sorted out. For future reference, this is why it's so important for both students and parents to understand their separate roles in the FAFSA process. Best of luck with your financial aid!

So glad you got it resolved! This is actually a really helpful thread for anyone dealing with similar FAFSA submission issues. The key takeaway is that the system can be confusing about what "submitted" actually means - sometimes it's just one section completed rather than the whole application. And calling FSA directly really does work if you can get through to them. Thanks for updating us with the solution!

•Yes, this thread is super helpful! I'm bookmarking it for future reference. It's reassuring to know that what seems like a major problem actually has a straightforward solution. The FAFSA system really could be clearer about the difference between partial and complete submissions though.

This is such a relief to read! I'm a new member here and was actually searching for help with a similar FAFSA issue when I found this thread. My mom completed her part yesterday but I was confused about why I couldn't access certain sections. Based on what happened with Chloe, it sounds like I just need to log in with my own FSA ID to finish my portion. It's really helpful to see the whole process documented here from problem to solution. Thanks for sharing your experience!

•Welcome to the community! You're absolutely right - just log in with your own FSA ID and you should be able to complete your student section. This thread really shows how confusing the FAFSA interface can be when it comes to showing submission status. The key thing I learned from reading through everyone's experiences is to not panic when you see "submitted" - it might just mean one section is done. Good luck finishing up your application!

Welcome to the community, Brooklyn! You're definitely on the right track - just use your own FSA ID to log in and complete your student section. This whole thread has been such a great learning experience for all of us dealing with FAFSA confusion. It's amazing how something that seems like a disaster (like Chloe's situation) can actually have such a straightforward solution once you understand how the system works. The key lesson here is that "submitted" doesn't always mean what we think it means in the FAFSA world. Hope your application goes smoothly from here!
