FAFSA invitation sent to me instead of military spouse - can we still complete application?

My daughter started her FAFSA for the 2025-2026 academic year and sent the parent contributor invitation to me, but my husband is actually the active duty military member (Army, 15 years service). Will this cause problems with her application? Should we delete and start over with an invitation to him instead? I'm worried because I know there are special considerations for military families and I don't want to mess up her financial aid. I do work part-time but my husband is the primary income. Anyone dealt with this before? The whole FAFSA process is overwhelming me!

You're fine! The parent contributor can be either parent in a married household. The military service benefits will still apply regardless of which parent completes the application, as long as you properly indicate military status when it asks about it. There's a specific section where you'll indicate that your spouse is active duty military, and that's what triggers the special considerations for service members' families. Just make sure to have your husband's military documentation handy (like his DOD ID number) when you're filling it out.

Oh thank goodness! So I can just continue with the application as the parent contributor? I was panicking thinking we'd need to start over. Thank you so much for clarifying this!

had this EXACT same situation last yr. you're good to go ahead, they just need info from at least 1 parent. my wife did ours even tho I'm the service member.

That's so reassuring to hear from someone who's been through it. Did you have any issues with getting all the military benefits applied correctly?

Actually the FSA website specifically states that for military families, the service member should be the one completing the parent portion. My son's financial aid office told us this when we had to correct our application last year. Just passing along what we learned the hard way!

That's actually incorrect. The Federal Student Aid guidelines do NOT require the service member to be the parent contributor. Either parent in a married household can serve as the contributor, and the military benefits are applied based on the reported military status, not on which parent completes the form. You may have had a specific circumstance or misunderstanding with your financial aid office.

Hmm maybe you're right and our aid office gave us wrong info? They made us redo the whole thing and it was such a hassle. Sorry if I confused anyone!

One important thing to remember is that when you get to the income section, you'll need to indicate your husband's income separately and check the box identifying him as active duty military. The system will then automatically apply the military provisions to your daughter's SAI calculation, which typically results in excluding combat pay and certain housing allowances from the income assessment. Just make sure you have his W-2 and any LES statements available when completing this section.

That makes sense! We'll have all his documents ready. I was confused because the FAFSA is so different now with the new SAI system. Is it true that being a military family might help her qualify for more aid?

Yes, military families often benefit from the special income exclusions like combat pay and Basic Allowance for Housing not being counted in the SAI calculation. This typically results in a lower Student Aid Index, which can increase eligibility for need-based aid such as Pell Grants and subsidized loans. Also, if your husband was deployed to a combat zone during the tax year being reported, make sure to mention that as it's given special consideration.

Man trying to reach the FSA customer service for questions like this is almost impossible these days. My wife is also military and we had some specific questions they never answered. Spent hours on hold then got disconnected 🤬

I had the exact same problem last month! Could not get through no matter what time I called. Finally I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of waiting. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Totally worth it for getting those specific military questions answered directly by an FSA agent.

thanks for the tip! gonna check that out right now because we still have some questions about the military housing allowance reporting

I think people are overthinking this. My daughter applied for fafsa last yr and we're a military family too. She just listed me (mom) as parent even though my husband is the service member. We got all the military benefits and she got a great financial aid package. As long as you check the military box and list his service correctly you should be fine.

UPDATE: I spoke with my daughter's college financial aid office, and they confirmed that either parent can be the contributor! I'm going ahead with completing the application as-is. Thanks everyone for your help and advice - especially about marking my husband's military status correctly. So relieved we don't have to start over from scratch!
