FAFSA glitch keeps looping me back to student circumstances page - anyone born in 2000 having this issue?

I'm going absolutely crazy trying to complete my 2025-2026 FAFSA application. Every time I get to the income verification section and click 'Next', it loops me right back to the student circumstances page! This has happened like 15 times already. I've tried different browsers, cleared cookies, even used my roommate's laptop. Nothing works. I notice I was born in 2000 - wondering if that's related? Anyone else born in 2000 experiencing this weird looping issue? I need to get this submitted by next week for my school's priority deadline!

At least I'm not alone in this nightmare. Did you try logging out completely and waiting a few hours? That's my next attempt...

This is a known issue with the new FAFSA system for certain birth years, particularly 2000. The system has trouble processing the verification between your birthdate and your current age calculation in some cases. There are three potential solutions: 1. Try completing your application between 11pm-6am when server traffic is lower 2. Answer the student circumstances questions slightly differently (if any are subjective) 3. Clear your browser data, restart your device, and use the .gov site directly rather than any redirects If those don't work, you'll need to contact FSA directly for a manual override. The technical issue is on their end, not yours.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! I'll try the late-night approach tonight. Do you know if this affects my SAI calculation at all? Or just the submission process?

0 coins

It won't affect your SAI calculation at all - this is purely a form submission technical glitch. Your financial information and aid eligibility remain exactly the same once you get past this issue. Just make sure all your income information is accurate when you finally get through.

Interesting! I've been using Firefox. I'll download Edge right now and give it a try. Thanks for the tip!

I work at a university financial aid office, and we've seen several students with this issue. The glitch seems to affect students born in 2000 because of how the system calculates dependency status verification. The system is trying to determine if you're 24+ (for independent status) but the calculation gets caught in a validation loop with certain 2000 birth months. If the browser changes don't work, you'll need to contact FSA directly. Unfortunately, phone wait times are running 2-3 hours currently due to the high volume of similar technical issues with the new system.

Thank you for confirming this! I tried Edge and still got the loop. I've been afraid to call because of those wait times... I don't have 3 hours to sit on hold. Is there an email option or something?

0 coins

Unfortunately, email responses are taking 7-10 business days, which might be too late for your priority deadline. Phone is still your best option despite the wait. I'd recommend trying to call first thing when they open (8am Eastern) as wait times are typically shorter then.

I was stuck in exactly this loop for DAYS until I discovered Claimyr. It's a service that holds your place in the FSA phone queue and calls you when an agent is about to answer. Saved me from a 2+ hour wait time! The agent was able to manually override the birthdate loop issue in about 5 minutes once I got through. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ or just go to claimyr.com. MUCH better than waiting on hold all day!

is this legit?? seems sketchy to have someone else call fafsa for you

Thanks for this recommendation! I'll try Edge one more time tonight, and if that doesn't work, I'll definitely check out Claimyr tomorrow. My deadline is coming up fast and I can't afford to miss it.

FAFSA IS THE WORST!!! This is my second year dealing with their technical glitches. Last year they lost my parent's tax info THREE TIMES and I nearly lost my Pell Grant eligibility. Now they can't even handle birth years correctly?? How hard is it to program a simple form? Our entire financial futures depend on this broken system!!!!

preach!! why is applying for financial aid harder than the actual college classes?? make it make sense

UPDATE: I just checked the FSA technical issues log, and they've officially acknowledged this as a known bug affecting primarily users born in 2000. They're rolling out a fix in the next 48 hours. If your deadline is after that, you might want to wait for the fix rather than spending hours troubleshooting.

Thank you for checking! My deadline is in 6 days, so waiting 48 hours is cutting it close, but might be better than fighting with the system. Where did you find this log? I'd like to keep an eye on the update myself.

It's on the FSA Partner Portal under System Updates (https://fsapartners.ed.gov/knowledge-center/system-updates). Not many students know about this resource, but it shows real-time system issues and planned maintenance.

my cousins boyfriend had this same issue but he just kept clicking back and forth between pages and eventually it let him through? maybe try just brute forcing it for like 30 minutes?

Honestly at this point I'll try anything! Going to attempt the brute force method tonight while watching Netflix. Thanks for the suggestion!

UPDATE: Success! After trying multiple approaches, here's what finally worked for me: I used Edge browser in InPrivate mode, AND I went back to the very beginning of the application and re-entered my birthdate with the format MM/DD/YYYY instead of selecting from the dropdown calendar. For some reason, that combination got me past the loop! I was able to complete and submit my FAFSA this morning. For anyone else born in 2000 facing this issue, try manually typing your birthdate instead of using the calendar picker!

omg thank you!! just tried this and it WORKED!! finally!

Great troubleshooting! This further confirms it's related to how the system processes birth year 2000 specifically. I'll share this solution with the financial aid office where I work so we can help other students facing the same issue.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who shared solutions here! I'm also born in 2000 and was hitting the same loop for the past 3 days. I was getting so stressed about missing my deadline. Just tried Ava's method with Edge InPrivate mode and manually typing the birthdate instead of using the calendar dropdown - IT WORKED! Submitted successfully on my first try. You all saved my financial aid! This community is amazing for helping each other navigate these technical nightmares.

So glad this worked for you too! It's amazing how a simple change like manually typing the date instead of using the dropdown can fix such a frustrating bug. I was literally about to give up and potentially miss my deadline. It's crazy that we had to crowdsource a solution to what should be a basic government form, but at least we figured it out together! Hope FSA gets this fixed soon so future students don't have to go through this stress.

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm also born in 2000 and have been dealing with this exact same looping issue for the past week. I was starting to panic about my approaching deadline. Just tried Ava's solution with Edge InPrivate mode and manually typing my birthdate instead of using the dropdown calendar - and it worked on the first try! I can't believe something so simple fixed what seemed like an impossible technical problem. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions. This community really came through when the official support system was failing us. Hopefully FSA gets this birth year calculation bug fixed soon so other students don't have to go through this stress!

This is exactly why I love this community! I'm a new member here but seeing everyone come together to solve this FAFSA nightmare gives me so much hope. I'm also born in 2000 and have been lurking here trying to find answers to this same issue. Haven't attempted my application yet because I was terrified of getting stuck, but now I know exactly what to do - Edge InPrivate mode and manually type the birthdate. You all are lifesavers! It's honestly ridiculous that we have to be our own tech support for something this important, but at least we have each other's backs.

Just wanted to add my experience to this thread! I'm also born in 2000 and was hitting this exact same loop yesterday. After reading through everyone's solutions here, I tried the Edge InPrivate + manual birthdate entry method that Ava discovered, and it worked perfectly! Got my FAFSA submitted this morning after days of frustration. One small addition to the solution: I also made sure to completely close all other browser windows before starting in InPrivate mode, just to be extra safe. Not sure if that made a difference, but figured I'd mention it in case it helps someone else. Thank you so much to everyone who shared their experiences and troubleshooting steps! This community is incredible - we shouldn't have to debug government websites for each other, but I'm so grateful we do. Hopefully FSA fixes this birth year bug soon so future 2000 babies don't have to deal with this stress!

Thank you for adding that extra tip about closing all other browser windows! I'm new to this community but have been following this thread closely because I'm also born in 2000 and dreading having to fill out my FAFSA. It's incredible how you all figured out this workaround when the official system was completely broken. The step-by-step solution is so clear now: Edge InPrivate mode, close all other windows, and manually type the birthdate instead of using the dropdown. I feel so much more confident about tackling my application now! This is exactly the kind of community support that makes all the difference when dealing with these technical nightmares.
