FAFSA error: Contributor email invitation leads to empty page - how to add spouse?
So frustrated with the new FAFSA system! My husband received the email to contribute to our daughter's FAFSA application as a contributor, but when he clicked the link in the email and logged in with his FSA ID, he just sees an empty page that says "No Activity Found" and "You don't have any cases or applications." There's literally nowhere for him to enter his information as a contributor. I thought these contributor invites were supposed to take you directly to where you can add your info? I've already submitted my part as the primary parent, but we need his income info too. Has anyone else had this problem with the 2025-26 FAFSA? Did we miss something obvious?

This is a common issue with the new FAFSA system. The contributor invitations sometimes don't link correctly. Instead of using the email link, have your husband go directly to studentaid.gov and log in with his FSA ID. Then he should click on the FAFSA form section and look for "Contribute to a FAFSA Form" option. If that doesn't appear, you might need to send a new invitation from your account. Make sure both of you are using different email addresses for your FSA IDs.

•Thank you! I'll have him try logging in directly rather than through the email link. We definitely have separate FSA IDs with different emails. Do you know if I need to resend the invitation from my account first, or should he be able to see it just by logging in directly?

omg the EXACT same thing happened with my wife's contributor invite!!! she kept getting the empty page too. so annoying. we eventually figured out that she needed to go to the FAFSA dashboard instead of using the email link. the whole new system is garbage tbh

•That's somewhat reassuring that we're not alone! Did you have to resend the invitation, or was she able to find it just by going to the dashboard? I'm worried we'll have to start over somehow.

•we didn't have to resend it. she just went to the dashboard and there was some notification about being invited to contribute. took us like 3 tries to figure it out tho because the new interface is so confusing

I think it might be a browser issue too. My husband had the same problem but when he switched from Chrome to Firefox it magically worked. Also try clearing cookies/cache before logging in. These little technical glitches with the new FAFSA system are driving everyone crazy!!

•We'll definitely try a different browser! He was using Chrome, so maybe Firefox will work better. Thanks for the suggestion about clearing cache too - we hadn't thought of that.

I had this EXACT problem last week and spent 4 hours trying to fix it. The solution was totally not intuitive. Your husband needs to go to studentaid.gov directly, log in, then go to the top right corner where it says "My Documents" or something like that - there should be a notification there about being invited as a contributor. DON'T use the email link - it's broken for most people. If that doesn't work, you might need to call FSA directly, which is a nightmare right now with all the FAFSA changes. I tried for days and kept getting disconnected.

•Thank you for the specific directions! We'll look for the notification in "My Documents" section. Really hoping we don't have to call FSA because I've heard the wait times are insane right now.

•If you do need to call FSA and are experiencing long wait times or disconnections, you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was getting disconnected after 2+ hours of waiting multiple times, but Claimyr got me through to an actual FSA agent in about 20 minutes for my FAFSA contributor issue. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Basically saves your place in line so you don't have to stay on hold forever. It was a lifesaver when I was dealing with a similar contributor invitation problem.

your problem is that the new fasfa system is BROKEN!!! my son applied in january and were STILL having problems with the contributer thing. the department of education should be ashamed of themselves for rolling out such a disaster!!! i've called 8 times and either get disconnected or told different things each time. good luck!!

•While there are definitely issues with the new system, I wouldn't say it's completely broken. Many families are successfully completing their applications. The contributor function is one of the more problematic areas, but there are workarounds. The rollout could have been smoother, but keep in mind this was a major overhaul of an extremely complex system.

•easy to say when your not the one who might MISS OUT on thousands in financial aid because of these "issues"!!! my sons college is saying they need the completed fafsa by next week for priority consideration and we STILL cant get the contributor part to work!!!

I work in a college financial aid office, and we're seeing this issue frequently with the new FAFSA. Here's what's happening: the contributor invitation system has several bugs that the Department of Education is aware of and working to fix. In the meantime, try these steps in exact order: 1. Have your husband log out completely from studentaid.gov 2. Clear browser cache and cookies 3. Log in fresh to studentaid.gov (not through the email link) 4. Look at the dashboard for a notification about being invited as a contributor 5. If no notification appears, check under "My Documents" and "My Activity" sections If none of that works, you may need to cancel the current invitation and send a new one. You can do this from your FAFSA application by going to the contributor section. As a last resort, if your income situation isn't complicated, you can manually enter your husband's information yourself if you have access to his tax information. The contributor function is helpful but not absolutely required.

•Thank you so much for these detailed steps! It's good to know this is a known issue and we're not doing something wrong. We'll try following your instructions exactly. As for entering his info myself - we have a somewhat complicated tax situation with 1099 income and some investment losses, so I was hoping to avoid that route, but it's good to know it's an option if nothing else works.

my daughter had this problem too lolol. the new fafsa is such a mess! we ended up just giving up on the contributor thing and she entered all my info herself. probably not the best solution but it worked i guess?

UPDATE: We got it working! For anyone else with this issue - the solution was a combination of suggestions here. My husband logged in directly to studentaid.gov (NOT through the email link), cleared his browser cache first, and switched from Chrome to Firefox. The invitation showed up under a tiny bell icon in the top right corner of his dashboard that we hadn't noticed before. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Glad you got it working! Yes, that notification bell is easy to miss. For future reference for others reading this thread - the notification bell is how most contributor invitations appear now, rather than the email link working properly. The Department of Education will hopefully fix the email links in a future update.

•The notification bell!! That's what I was trying to remember! So many people miss that tiny little icon. Glad you figured it out!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now - my spouse got the contributor email but keeps hitting that "No Activity Found" page. Really glad to see Alice got it resolved and that there are so many practical solutions here. I'm going to try the Firefox + cache clearing + notification bell approach first before attempting to call FSA. It's frustrating that the email links don't work properly, but at least there are workarounds. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

•Welcome to the club! This contributor issue seems to be affecting so many families right now. The Firefox + cache clearing combo really does seem to work for a lot of people - I think there's something about how Chrome handles the FSA website that causes problems. Definitely check for that notification bell icon too, it's super easy to miss! If you still can't find it after trying those steps, you might also want to have your spouse check under the "My Activity" section like Kingston mentioned earlier. Hope you get it sorted out quickly!

As someone who just went through this nightmare last month, I can confirm that the notification bell trick works! But here's an additional tip that might help others - if your spouse still can't see the notification bell after trying all the browser fixes, try having them log out completely, then log back in using a private/incognito browser window. Something about the session cookies seems to get stuck sometimes. Also, make sure you're both not logged into FSA accounts simultaneously from the same computer - that caused issues for us too. The whole contributor system definitely needs work, but these workarounds do help most people get through it eventually!

•Thanks for the incognito window tip! That's actually brilliant - I hadn't thought about session conflicts when both spouses are logged in. We've been trying to troubleshoot this from the same computer, so that might be part of our problem. I'll definitely have my husband try logging in through an incognito window after we clear everything out. It's amazing how many little technical workarounds are needed for what should be a straightforward process, but I really appreciate everyone sharing what actually works!

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone still struggling with this! We had the same contributor email issue, and what finally worked for us was having my husband create a completely fresh FSA ID with a different email address. Turns out his original FSA ID had some weird glitch from years ago when he helped with our older daughter's FAFSA. Once he made the new account, I sent a fresh contributor invitation to that new email, and everything worked perfectly - he could see the notification bell right away and complete his portion without any issues. Might be worth trying if all the browser fixes aren't working!

•That's really interesting about creating a fresh FSA ID! I wonder if that's because the old FSA ID system had different data structures or something that don't play well with the new FAFSA platform. It makes sense that starting completely fresh would bypass whatever weird glitches might be stuck in the old account. Thanks for sharing that solution - it's definitely something worth trying for people who've exhausted all the browser-based fixes. Did your husband have to verify his identity again with the new FSA ID, or was that process pretty straightforward?

I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm currently dealing with this exact same contributor invitation issue with my husband's FSA account. The email link just takes him to that frustrating "No Activity Found" page. Based on all the helpful suggestions here, I'm going to have him try the Firefox browser + cache clearing + looking for the notification bell approach first. It's really reassuring to see that so many people have figured out workarounds for this problem. The new FAFSA system definitely has some kinks to work out, but at least there's a supportive community here sharing solutions! I'll report back if we get it working.
