FAFSA contributor link not working for one parent - blank page issue

I'm at my wits' end trying to complete our 2025-2026 FAFSA application! My daughter completed her student section last night and invited both her father and me as contributors. We both received the invitation emails and clicked the 'get started' buttons. My link worked perfectly - I logged in with my FSA ID and completed my section. But when my husband clicks his link, it just takes him to a completely blank page! When we log back into my daughter's FAFSA account, it only shows ME listed as a contributor - my husband isn't there at all. We've tried different browsers, clearing cache, even using different devices. We've spent THREE HOURS clicking through every help link on studentaid.gov but can't find anything addressing this specific problem. Has anyone else had this bizarre contributor link issue? How do we fix this so both parents can contribute to her FAFSA?

This exact thing happened to me last month! The system is really buggy right now with the new FAFSA format. Try having your daughter remove you both as contributors, then add just your husband first. Let him complete his section, then have her add you afterward. For some reason, the system sometimes glitches when trying to handle two parent contributors added at the same time.

Thank you! I'll try removing both of us and re-adding my husband first. Did that actually work for you? I'm worried we'll lose the information I already entered if she removes me as a contributor.

There are a few troubleshooting steps you can try: 1. Make sure your husband is using the exact same email address that your daughter entered when adding him as a contributor 2. Check if your husband has a valid FSA ID that's fully verified (sometimes there's a 1-3 day verification period) 3. Try having your daughter delete him as contributor and re-add him 4. Make sure your daughter properly designated him as a contributor, not just as a preparer If none of those work, you might need to call Federal Student Aid directly at 1-800-433-3243, though wait times can be extremely long this time of year.

Thanks for these suggestions! We've verified his FSA ID (he's had it for years) and double-checked the email. We'll try deleting and re-adding him. His FSA ID is definitely active because he can log into studentaid.gov directly without problems.

lol the FAFSA is such garbage this year!! my ex and i had this EXACT problem. nothing worked until we finally gave up and just had my daughter enter all his info directly while he sat with her. not ideal but at least it got done

Oh no, I was afraid of that! I really don't want my daughter entering his information - it should be private between each parent and the system. Plus she doesn't know all his financial details. There HAS to be a better solution!

When my son was completing his FAFSA i had a similar problem. We found out that my husband had to complete his FSA ID verification by checking his email and clicking a verification link. Check if he received any emails from FSA about verifying his ID credentials. Also check his spam folder. The links expire after 14 days i think.

His FSA ID is definitely verified - we've been using it for years with our older daughter's FAFSAs. He can log directly into studentaid.gov with no problems. It's just the contributor link that's broken somehow.

After struggling with this for days, I finally got through to someone at Federal Student Aid who fixed it for us. The problem was that my husband's FSA ID had some kind of internal flag on it from an old password reset attempt. Try getting someone at FSA to manually check the account status. It took me 3 hours on hold though 😡

If you're struggling with FSA phone wait times, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). It basically waits on hold for you and calls you back when an actual human agent is on the line. Saved me hours of frustration with FAFSA issues last month. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. Way better than listening to that annoying hold music for hours!

Thank you! I'll check out that service if we can't fix this with the other suggestions. 3 hours on hold sounds absolutely miserable, especially with our deadline coming up soon.

OK so I work at a college financial aid office and we've seen this a TON lately. Here's what's happening: if both parents have the SAME EMAIL ADDRESS associated with their FSA IDs, the system can't properly link both contributors. One of you needs to update your FSA ID with a different email address, wait 24-48 hours for the change to propagate in the system, then have your daughter remove and re-add both of you with the correct emails.

Oh my goodness - that might be it! We DO use the same family email for a lot of accounts. I'll have him update his FSA ID email right away. Thank you so much for this insight from the inside! Do you know how long we should wait after changing the email before trying again?

Give it at least 24 hours after changing the email before having your daughter remove and re-add you both. The FSA systems are notoriously slow with updates! And remember that changing FSA ID email requires verification of the new email, so make sure he completes that step too.

I wish we could do that, but I'm worried about giving someone access to all our financial information. Plus we're trying to get this done before the priority deadline next week. I'm hoping one of these solutions works!

Update on my earlier suggestion - I just remembered another thing that worked for some people. Try having your husband create a brand new browser profile (not just incognito mode) before clicking the link. Sometimes there's weird cookie/cache issues even when you think you've cleared everything.

Thanks for the follow-up! We'll definitely try this too. At this point we're willing to try anything to get his contributor section working!

UPDATE: We solved it! Thank you all for your help. It turned out to be exactly what @financial_aid_advisor suggested - we were both using the same email address for our FSA IDs. My husband updated his FSA ID with his work email, we waited 24 hours, then my daughter removed us both and added us again with our separate emails. His contributor link worked perfectly after that! Such a simple fix but nowhere in the FAFSA help documents. Now we're finally able to complete her application before the priority deadline!

I'm so glad that worked! You'd be amazed how many families run into this exact issue. The FAFSA system really should warn people about this during setup, but at least you got it resolved before your deadline. Good luck with the financial aid process!

Thanks for updating us! I'm going to save this thread in case anyone else I know runs into the same problem.

This is such a helpful thread! I'm bookmarking this for future reference. The same email address issue seems so obvious in hindsight but I never would have thought of it. It's frustrating that the FAFSA system doesn't give clearer error messages when this happens - a blank page tells you nothing! Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions, especially @Naila Gordon for the insider knowledge. Stories like this really show how valuable this community is for navigating these confusing processes.

I completely agree! This thread is a perfect example of why community support is so valuable. The FAFSA system really needs better error handling - a blank page gives parents absolutely no clue what's wrong. I'm dealing with my first FAFSA application for my oldest child next year, so I'm definitely saving this info about the email address issue. It's amazing how a simple technical quirk can cause such a major headache during an already stressful process. Thanks to everyone who shared their solutions!
