FAFSA delay concerns for 2024-2025 funding - missing notifications?

I'm starting to get really worried about my financial aid for 2024-2025. It's already mid-April and I haven't gotten ANY notifications from either FAFSA or my university about my aid package. Last year I had my full award letter by March 15th! I've logged into my studentaid.gov account and everything just says "processing" with no updates since I submitted back in January. My school's financial aid portal also shows nothing for next year. Is anyone else experiencing this weird silence? My friend at another college already got her full aid package weeks ago, so I'm freaking out that something's wrong with my application. Did they change the timeline this year? Or is there some kind of system-wide delay affecting student funding? I can't afford tuition without my grants and I need to know if I should be looking for more loans or scholarships ASAP!

How long did it take for your SAI to show up? Mine still just says processing. Did you have to do anything special to get it to update?

There's definitely a system-wide delay affecting all 2024-2025 FAFSA applications. The Department of Education announced that schools wouldn't even receive student data until March (instead of January) because of the FAFSA Simplification Act implementation. Many colleges are 6-8 weeks behind their normal financial aid packaging schedule. Your situation is normal this year, unfortunately. Most schools are still working through their backlog and prioritizing returning students. You might not see your award package until late April or even May, but that doesn't mean anything is wrong with your application specifically.

That's actually a huge relief. I had no idea about the system-wide delays! I've been checking my account every day and stressing out. Do you know if the aid amounts are expected to be similar to previous years once they finally process everything?

my brother goes to state and he got his package already but i'm still waiting for mine at community college so maybe it depends on the school??

OMG the new FAFSA is a DISASTER!!! My daughter's application has been "processing" for 10 WEEKS now! Called FSA 14 TIMES and nobody picks up. This is the worst rollout of anything I've ever seen. Colleges can't do their part until FSA gets their act together!

This new FAFSA has been a total nightmare. I'm a financial aid counselor at a small college and we're drowning. We still don't have data for 60% of our applicants and our students are panicking about commitments. The old system had issues but at least it functioned.

Financial aid advisor here! What you're experiencing is absolutely normal for the 2024-2025 cycle. The FAFSA redesign has caused unprecedented delays across the entire system. Here's what you need to know: 1. The Department of Education didn't start sending FAFSA data to schools until March 21st (normally starts in January) 2. Many schools are receiving student data in batches, so they're processing aid packages in waves 3. Your SAI (Student Aid Index, which replaced EFC) may take 4-6 weeks to calculate from submission 4. Most schools are prioritizing by enrollment status and application date The good news: Aid is still available! This delay doesn't mean less funding, just slower processing. Schools have extended their priority deadlines, and many have pushed back deposit deadlines because of these delays. I recommend checking both your studentaid.gov account AND your school's portal weekly rather than daily. Most schools are communicating timelines through their financial aid office websites.

Thank you SO much for this detailed explanation! This makes me feel so much better. I've been checking daily and driving myself crazy. I'll check my school's financial aid page for updates about their timeline. Do you think I need to contact my financial aid office directly or just wait it out?

You're welcome! At this point, I'd recommend waiting another 1-2 weeks before contacting your financial aid office directly. They're likely overwhelmed with calls from students in your exact situation, and they probably don't have individual updates yet. If May arrives and you still don't have any information, then I'd recommend reaching out. By that point, they should have more visibility into where they are in their processing queue and might be able to give you a more specific timeline for your package.

I was in the exact same boat - totally freaking out about the silence. After 3 weeks of trying to call Federal Student Aid with no luck (constant busy signals or disconnects), I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual FSA agent in about 15 minutes. Basically saved my sanity! The agent confirmed there's a massive backlog for 2024-2025 FAFSA processing and explained that my application was stuck in verification. Nothing I could've known without talking to someone! They helped me submit the missing documents right there on the call. If you need to actually reach someone at FSA, check out claimyr.com - they have this demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Worth it for the peace of mind to know exactly what's happening with your application instead of just seeing "processing" forever.

The 2024-2025 FAFSA cycle delay isn't just affecting students - it's created chaos for financial aid offices too. I work at a university financial aid office, and we're weeks behind our normal schedule. Some important context: 1. The Department of Education's FAFSA Simplification rollout has been problematic from the start 2. Most schools didn't receive ANY student data until late March 3. Many records are arriving with errors that require manual correction 4. Schools can't prepare aid packages until they have complete, accurate FAFSA data If your SAI is still processing, there's likely nothing wrong with your specific application - it's just in the national backlog. Most schools are trying to get packages out by May 1st for incoming freshmen, with continuing students following shortly after. I'd recommend checking your school's financial aid website and social media for updates about their specific timeline rather than comparing to friends at other schools.

Wow, I had no idea it was affecting the schools this badly too. That makes a lot of sense why nothing is showing up in my portal. Is there anything I can do to make sure my application isn't stuck somewhere with errors? Or is it all just waiting at this point?

Mostly waiting, unfortunately. If your FAFSA shows as "processing" on studentaid.gov, it's still in the Department of Education's queue and hasn't been sent to your school yet. If it shows "processed" but you don't see updates in your school portal, then your school likely has it but hasn't completed their review. One proactive thing you can do: check if your school's financial aid office has a document tracking system or checklist in their portal. Some schools are identifying verification requirements or missing information before completing aid packages. If you see any requested documents, submit those ASAP to avoid further delays.

did anyone else have weird issues with the parent contribution part? my dad created his fsa id but it kept saying there was an error when he tried to sign the application. we had to do the signature page and mail it in which probably added to the delay

omg yes!! my mom had the same problem! the system wouldn't recognize her social security number even though she's used it for my past fafsa applications. we ended up having to mail in a signature page too. so annoying

A bit off topic but has anyone noticed their SAI is completely different from what their EFC used to be? Mine went up by like $5,000 even though our family income is exactly the same! I don't understand how they're calculating it now and I'm scared I'll get way less aid.

0 coins

The calculation formula has changed significantly with the switch from EFC to SAI. The new formula treats some types of income and assets differently, particularly for families with multiple students in college. The good news is that schools have received increased federal funding to account for some of these changes, so your actual aid package might not be reduced proportionally to the SAI increase. Many schools are also adjusting their institutional aid formulas to accommodate the new federal calculation. I'd wait to see your complete package before assuming you'll receive less aid overall.

Update: I finally got through to someone at my school's financial aid office! They confirmed they're about 6 weeks behind their normal schedule and said most continuing students won't see packages until early May. The advisor also mentioned they're prioritizing students with complete applications, so I'm glad I submitted everything back in January even with all these delays.

That's WAY too late for students trying to make enrollment decisions! How are we supposed to compare financial aid offers when they arrive AFTER commitment deadlines?! The entire system is failing students this year.

I'm in the exact same situation and it's so stressful! I submitted my FAFSA in December and it's been showing "processing" for months. What's really frustrating is that I keep seeing mixed information - some people saying their schools have packages ready while others are still waiting like us. I called my financial aid office last week and they basically said "we're waiting on the Department of Education just like you are." It's reassuring to read all these comments confirming it's a widespread issue and not something wrong with my specific application, but I'm still worried about planning for next year. Has anyone heard if schools are going to extend their enrollment deposit deadlines because of these delays? I feel like they have to, right? We can't make decisions about where to attend without knowing what our aid packages look like!
