FAFSA deadline approaching - self-employed tax info delay with accountant

My husband and I are both self-employed (he has a construction business, I'm a freelance designer) and our accountant is STILL sitting on our tax information we need for the FAFSA. It's been 3 weeks since we requested it! We have absolutely no idea what numbers to use for our business income/expenses on the FAFSA form, and I'm getting seriously worried about missing deadlines. Has anyone else dealt with filing FAFSA as self-employed? Do we wait for the accountant or is there a way to estimate? Our daughter's school is already sending reminders about priority deadlines coming up in February.

I've been self-employed for 15 years and do my FAFSA every year for my twins. You don't need to wait for your accountant! The 2025-2026 FAFSA uses your 2023 tax year information, so you should already have those numbers if you filed taxes last year. Look at your Schedule C from last year's return - that has all your business income and expenses. If you don't have a copy, you can request your tax transcript directly from the IRS website.

Thank you! We did file last year, but our accountant has all our copies and told us to wait for his "special FAFSA worksheet" he's preparing. Should we just go ahead with the numbers from last year's return then? I'm just worried about getting something wrong because our business expenses were really different this year.

ur NOT using current yr numbers!! FAFSA is always using 2 yrs ago taxes - so for 2025-2026 FAFSA ur using 2023 tax info not 2024!! ur accountant might be confusing u

Omg seriously? I feel so stupid now. Our accountant definitely told us we needed updated numbers from this year! No wonder he's taking forever - he's probably working on our current taxes that aren't even due yet. 🤦‍♀️

Self-employed FAFSA filer here - your accountant is causing unnecessary delay. For the 2025-2026 FAFSA, you need your 2023 tax information which should have been filed by April 2024. The SAI formula specifically uses adjusted gross income and information from your Schedule C. Here's what you need specifically: 1. Your AGI from Form 1040 2. Business income from Schedule C (both businesses) 3. Any business losses would be reported as negative income 4. You'll also need information about business assets if they exceed certain thresholds Don't miss your priority deadlines waiting for an accountant to prepare something you already have access to. You can get all this directly from the IRS through their transcript service.

Thank you for breaking this down! I just checked and we can access our 2023 return through our tax software. I see the Schedule C forms for both our businesses now. This is such a relief - I was getting so anxious about missing deadlines.

wait are u SURE it uses 2023?? i thought the new simplified FAFSA changed all that and now uses different tax years?? i remember reading something about that somewhere

No, that's incorrect information. The simplified FAFSA changed many things, but the tax year used for calculations remained the same. For the 2025-2026 academic year, you use 2023 tax information (prior-prior year). This hasn't changed with the simplified FAFSA.

I'm self-employed too and I HATE how the FAFSA handles business income. Last year they counted all my gross business income without properly accounting for expenses and my SAI was ridiculously high. My kid got practically no aid even though we barely make ends meet after business expenses. The system is RIGGED against small business owners!!! Make sure you understand how they're calculating your business income or you'll get SCREWED like we did.

Same thing happened to my brother! His lawn care business looked way more profitable on paper than it actually was and his daughter got zero financial aid. The FAFSA formula really doesn't understand how small businesses operate.

I had a similar situation last year with my accountant delaying our FAFSA filing. After weeks of not being able to get through to him OR the Federal Student Aid helpline (kept getting disconnected after 45+ minute waits), I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual FSA agent in about 10 minutes. They helped me understand exactly what business documents I needed and confirmed I could use my prior year tax info without waiting for my accountant's worksheet. Saved me so much stress! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

does that actually work?? i tried calling fafsa like 6 times last month and never got thru

Yes! I was skeptical too but it definitely worked for me. The FSA agent I talked to was super helpful with explaining exactly how self-employment income gets reported on the FAFSA.

when i did my fafsa they just asked for my adjusted gross income from my taxes, not all the schedule c stuff separately? maybe its different for different people idk

You're right that the FAFSA asks for AGI from your tax return, but the system also looks at other forms like Schedule C for business owners. Your AGI already includes your net business income/loss, but they may request additional information about business assets over certain thresholds. The simplified FAFSA has made this less complicated, but self-employed people often still need to provide more details.

I wanted to update everyone - we got our 2023 tax transcript directly from the IRS website and were able to complete our daughter's FAFSA yesterday! We didn't need to wait for our accountant at all. The process was much easier than I expected once we had the right information. Thank you all for your help and advice!

That's great news! Make sure to save a PDF copy of your submitted FAFSA in case there are any verification requests later. Some schools will ask for additional documentation, especially for self-employed parents. Having everything saved in one place makes that process much smoother.

Good idea - just downloaded a copy and saved it to our financial aid folder. I'll let our accountant know we didn't need his special worksheet after all! 😅
