FAFSA corrections locked while school commitment deadlines approach - what to do?
I'm stressed about my daughter's FAFSA status showing 'signature required' even though I DEFINITELY signed it back in January! With the corrections portal still not open and May 1st decision deadlines approaching fast, I'm worried her financial aid packages won't be finalized in time. Her top schools (one private, one public) have offered good merit scholarships, but without knowing the full aid package, we're essentially being asked to commit blindly to potentially $35K-40K/year. They haven't budged on moving their commitment dates despite the FAFSA delays. For those in similar situations - what are you doing? I've scheduled a meeting with financial aid at her first-choice school next week, but wondering if there are other steps I should take. Is anyone else feeling forced to make decisions without complete financial information?

we're in exactly the same boat with my son. his dream school costs $58k and they've offered merit but without the FAFSA processed we have no idea if we can afford it. we requested an extension on the May 1 deadline and they gave us until May 15, which probably still won't be enough time but at least it's something. DEFINITELY talk to all the financial aid offices and ask for deadline extensions!!

•Thank you for sharing! I didn't realize requesting an extension was even an option. I'll definitely ask during our meeting. Did you have to provide any specific documentation for the extension request?

I work in financial aid at a university (not one your daughter is considering, obviously). Most schools are being flexible this year because of the FAFSA disaster. When you speak with financial aid, ask them for an "estimated aid package" based on your financial information. Many schools are doing this to help families make decisions. They'll make you sign something acknowledging it's just an estimate, but it can give you a ballpark figure to work with until the official FAFSA is processed.

•This is incredibly helpful information! I hadn't heard about estimated aid packages. I'll definitely ask about this during our meeting. Would we need to bring our tax information with us?

•Yes, bring copies of your 2023 tax returns and W-2s. If you have any unusual financial circumstances (job loss, medical expenses, etc.) bring documentation for those too. The more information you provide, the more accurate their estimate can be. Some schools even have their own institutional methodology worksheets they can run without waiting for the FAFSA.

This whole FAFSA situation is RIDICULOUS!! My daughter got into 5 schools and NONE of them have her financial aid ready. The system said I didn't sign either, but I DID!! I've spent HOURS trying to get through to someone at Federal Student Aid with no luck. Phone lines always busy or they hang up on you. The government completely botched this rollout and now our kids are paying the price. I'm so angry I could scream.

•I had the same issue with the phone lines but finally got through using Claimyr.com - it holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Their video demo (https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ) shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration and I was able to confirm they received my signature but it hadn't processed in their system yet. The agent put a note on our account and said it should update within 10 days.

•OMG thank you!! I'm going to try this right now. I've literally wasted entire days trying to get through to someone. At this point I'll try anything!

my sons school extended the deadline to June 1 cuz of all the FAFSA problems. maybe ask if thats an option?

•That's a much more generous extension than what others seem to be getting. I'll definitely ask about this. Did your son's school announce this publicly or did you have to request it?

Here's what I recommend as a financial aid consultant: 1. Request a deadline extension from ALL schools your daughter is considering - most are granting at least 2 weeks 2. Ask for an estimated aid package based on your financial information (bring tax documents) 3. Consider submitting a deposit to hold her spot at her top choice (usually $500-1000) - you may lose this if you ultimately choose another school, but it buys you time 4. If FAFSA corrections open (reportedly April 23), make your correction immediately and ask the school about their processing timeline 5. Compare the merit scholarships carefully - sometimes a school with slightly lower merit might offer better need-based aid once FAFSA is processed This FAFSA cycle has been unprecedented in its problems, but schools are generally being accommodating if you communicate proactively.

•This is such a comprehensive list - thank you! We've already paid a deposit at her second choice ($500) but were hesitant about the top choice since their deposit is $1500. The detailed steps really help organize my thoughts before the meeting.

•The deposit strategy worked for us! we paid to hold my daughters spot at 2 schools and it gave us time to figure out the financial situation. ended up losing one deposit but it was worth the peace of mind

This happened to me too!!! Except mine says missing parent signature for my husband who DEFINITELY signed it. So frustrating. I think the whole system is broken this year. I've talked to our top choice school and they basically said they're processing FAFSAs as quickly as they can but they're overwhelmed too. Ugh. Good luck to your daughter!

•It really does seem like a system-wide failure this year! I hope your situation gets resolved quickly too. Have you had any luck getting through to FAFSA support?

Has anyone had any success with getting their SAI (Student Aid Index) number directly from Federal Student Aid instead of waiting for schools to process it? I heard that might be possible but can't figure out how to do it.

•Supposedly you can see your SAI on the FAFSA portal once it's fully processed, but most people with signature issues don't have that yet. If you get through to an agent using Claimyr or otherwise, you can specifically ask them for your SAI number. I was able to get ours that way and shared it with schools to speed up their processing.

schools should just move ALL the deadlines cuz of how bad fafsa is this year. so stupid to make kids commit without knowing if they can afford it. my daughter picked her safety school just cuz we KNOW we can afford it without aid, even tho she got into better schools. the whole thing is making me so mad!!

•EXACTLY!! It's forcing students to make decisions based on incomplete information. That's why I'm pushing all my daughter's schools for extensions. Some are more helpful than others. The whole situation is a mess.

One more piece of advice - make sure you document ALL communication with both Federal Student Aid and the schools' financial aid offices. Get names of who you speak with, dates, and what was discussed. If there's a dispute later about deadlines or why you couldn't commit by May 1, having this documentation will be crucial. Many schools are creating exception processes for this unusual year.

•Great point about documentation. I've been keeping notes but haven't been as thorough as I should be. I'll start recording names and specific promises made during these conversations.
