FAFSA contributor can't sign after correction - button completely unresponsive

I'm about to lose my mind with this FAFSA issue! My application was processed initially, but we noticed my stepdad's W-2 information was entered incorrectly (we put $67,800 instead of $76,800). We went back and corrected it, but now when he tries to sign the corrected application, absolutely NOTHING happens when he clicks the 'Sign' button. The page doesn't respond, no error message, no confirmation - it just sits there. I've tried everything: - Got help from my college financial aid office (they were baffled too) - Called FAFSA's helpline 8 times (disconnected after 45+ min wait each time) - Cleared cookies/cache on 3 different browsers - Tried on different computers - Made sure our internet was stable - Even tried at different times of day thinking maybe the system was overloaded My financial aid package is pending this correction and my housing deadline is coming up in 2 weeks. Has anyone experienced this signature glitch after making corrections? Any solutions that actually work?

Have you tried turning it off and on again? Lol but seriously maybe try using an incognito window? Sometimes these government sites are just garbage.

Tried incognito too! Same result - the button just sits there mocking me. I even recorded a video of the issue to show the financial aid office and they just shrugged.

This is a known issue with the 2025-2026 FAFSA form when making corrections to contributor financial information. The system has a glitch where the signature functionality fails silently if there's a significant change to reported income (which your $9,000 difference qualifies as). Two possible solutions: 1. Try signing between 2-4am Eastern time when system traffic is lowest 2. Instead of editing the existing form, start a fresh FAFSA with the correct information and submit it as a new application

Thank you! I'll try the middle-of-night approach first. If I submit a whole new application, will that cause problems with my existing one? I'm worried about having duplicate applications in the system.

Starting a new application won't cause problems as long as you check the box indicating it's a correction. The system will recognize your FSA ID and automatically flag it as replacing the previous submission. Just make sure you complete it fully in one session.

omg i had the EXACT same issue last month!!!! the sign button just wouldn't do anything no matter what. i tried like 10000 times and was ready to throw my laptop out the window. ended up having to call them and stay on hold for like 3 hours to get it fixed

3 hours?! That's actually better than my experience - I can't even get through after 45 minutes. Did they have a special number you called or just the main helpline?

just the regular number but i called right when they opened at 8am and just put my phone on speaker while i did other stuff. they had to do some kinda reset on my application from their end

This is a frustrating but fixable issue. The signature problem occurs because the system creates a verification hold when income changes exceed certain thresholds (typically 10% or more of the original amount). Before trying to create an entirely new application, I'd recommend: 1. Print a copy of your current FAFSA for reference (in case you need to start over) 2. Log out completely, clear browser data, restart your computer 3. Log back in using your FSA ID, but instead of going to corrections, go to "View Processed Information" 4. From that screen, select "Make Correction" - this alternative pathway sometimes bypasses the signature glitch 5. Re-enter the corrected information and attempt the signature again If that doesn't work, trying during off-peak hours (early morning or late night) does sometimes help as system resources aren't as strained.

Thank you for the detailed steps! I'll try the "View Processed Information" route tonight. I was always going directly to "Make Correction" from the main dashboard, so maybe that's part of the problem.

I had this EXACT issue last semester and wasted soooooo much time trying to fix it myself. Nothing on the FAFSA website worked no matter what I tried. The signature button was completely dead. I ended up using Claimyr to get through to a FAFSA agent without the endless hold times. They have this service where they wait on hold for you then call you when an actual human picks up. I was skeptical but desperate - watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ) and gave it a shot. Got connected to a FAFSA agent in about 25 minutes who unlocked something on my account and I could suddenly sign the correction. Their website is claimyr.com if you're as frustrated as I was. Saved me from missing my financial aid deadline.

This sounds promising! I'm definitely at the desperate stage now. Did the agent have to do something specific to fix the signature issue? I want to make sure I explain the problem correctly when I get through.

Yes, tell them specifically it's a "signature authentication failure after income correction" - those were the magic words that got them to understand. They have to reset something on their end. The guy I talked to said it happens all the time with the new FAFSA form.

THE ENTIRE FAFSA SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN THIS YEAR!!! My daughter had similar issues and we ended up having to drive 2 hours to a federal student aid office to get it fixed in person. Online support is useless and phone support is nonexistent. This is people's EDUCATION and FUTURES at stake and they can't even make a website that works properly! Makes me FURIOUS how they expect families to navigate this nightmare!!

While I understand your frustration, there's no need to drive to a physical office. The signature issue can typically be resolved by contacting the Federal Student Aid Information Center. The new FAFSA form had some initial technical challenges, but they've been addressing them systematically.

Easy for you to say! We called FIFTY TIMES over TWO WEEKS and never got through! Meanwhile my daughter's university was threatening to cancel her enrollment without the finalized FAFSA. So yes, the 4-hour round trip drive WAS necessary for us! The system is BROKEN!

I work in financial aid at a university and we've seen this signature issue frequently this cycle. Here's what I recommend: 1. First, verify your contributor is using their own FSA ID, not yours, to sign. This seems obvious but happens often. 2. The most reliable fix: Have your contributor log in separately with their own FSA ID (not through your application), go to their FSA dashboard, and look for a notification about pending signatures. They can often sign from there even when the button in your application isn't working. 3. If neither works, ask your school's financial aid office to place a "signature override hold" on your file while you continue working with FSA to resolve the technical issue. This won't permanently fix the FAFSA, but it will allow your school to proceed with your financial aid package while the signature issue is being resolved.

Thank you - this is super helpful! My stepdad definitely has his own FSA ID and is using it correctly, but we haven't tried having him log in separately to his own dashboard. I'll try that tonight. I'll also ask about the signature override hold - that would be a huge relief if my school can process my aid package while we sort this out.

my brother had this exact thing happen lol. he just gave up and called his school and they told him to just submit without the signature and they would handle it on their end somehow. maybe try that?

Really? I didn't know schools could process applications without all signatures. I'll definitely ask if that's an option with my financial aid office. That would be so much easier than fighting with the FAFSA website!

UPDATE: I finally got it working! After trying literally everything suggested here, what finally worked was: 1. Had my stepdad create a brand new FSA ID (even though his old one worked fine for the initial application) 2. Logged in at 3:15am when the system was quiet 3. Went through the "View Processed Information" route instead of the regular correction path 4. Used Chrome in incognito mode with all extensions disabled The signature button finally actually DID something! Got the confirmation email 10 minutes later. Thanks everyone for the help - this system is such a nightmare. For anyone else with this issue, try creating a new FSA ID for your contributor!

congrats!!! that's so weird that a new FSA ID fixed it. the fafsa system makes absolutely zero sense sometimes

Thank you for sharing your solution! This is very helpful information. The FSA ID refresh approach isn't well-documented but seems to resolve authentication chain issues that occur after corrections. I'll share this with other students experiencing the same problem.

Wow, creating a new FSA ID to fix the signature issue - that's such a random but brilliant solution! I'm dealing with a similar problem right now where my mom's signature isn't working after we corrected some tax info. The button just sits there doing nothing no matter what browser or device we use. Going to try your exact steps tonight: new FSA ID for her, 3am login, "View Processed Information" route, and Chrome incognito. Fingers crossed this nightmare finally ends! Thanks for coming back to share what actually worked - you're a lifesaver for posting the solution after you figured it out.
