FAFSA class status correction mistake - can I cancel after entering parent portal?
I think I messed up my daughter's FAFSA application by marking her as a sophomore when she's actually going to be a junior next year. Her application was already processed with this mistake, and I logged into my parent portal thinking I could fix the year classification there. But I don't see any option to change her class status in the parent section! I haven't submitted any corrections yet - I just went in looking for where to fix it. Can I just exit/cancel out of the correction process since I didn't actually make any changes? Will this mess up her already processed application? I'm worried about delaying her financial aid package.

•I tried calling twice but got disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes each time! So frustrating. I'm worried if I don't resolve this soon my daughter's school won't get her correct information in time for aid packaging.

The parent portal is ONLY for updating parent information like income, assets, etc. You can't change student status info there. You'll need to log back into the STUDENT portal with your daughter's FSA ID to make that kind of correction. And yes, you can just exit the parent correction process if you didn't submit anything - it won't affect the processed application.

•That's such a relief! Thank you for clarifying. So if I just exit out of the correction process in the parent portal without submitting, her original application stays processed as is? Then we can fix the sophomore/junior mistake through her student account?

•Exactly! The parent portal corrections aren't saved until you completely submit them. Your daughter will need to log in with her FSA ID, select 'Make FAFSA Correction,' and then she can update her grade level. Just be aware that any correction will put her application back into processing status for a few days.

I had the EXACT same problem with my son's FAFSA last month!!! I tried calling the Federal Student Aid helpline like 8 times and kept getting disconnected or waiting FOREVER. SO FRUSTRATING!!! I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a real person. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of waiting. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

GRADE LEVEL CORRECTION IS A COMMON ISSUE - DON'T PANIC!! The financial aid system is DESIGNED to make us mess up! I've been through this THREE times with my kids. Here's what happens: if you exit without submitting corrections in the parent portal, NOTHING changes. But the grade level is CRITICAL for determining loan eligibility and some grants too!! When my daughter's status was wrong, her school's financial aid office also helped us fix it. They can sometimes make adjustments on their end too.

•This is actually incorrect information. Schools cannot change the grade level on the FAFSA directly. They can override certain FAFSA elements, but grade level must be corrected by the student through the correction process. Please don't spread misinformation about the FAFSA process.

My son had his fafsa all messed up too lol. we called and called and finally my husband went to the financial aid office in person and they helped us. sometimes its just easier to go in person tbh

•That's a good suggestion, but my daughter attends college in another state, so visiting in person isn't really an option for us right now. I think we'll try the student portal correction approach first.

Just want to add one more important detail - when your daughter makes the correction to her grade level, make sure she ONLY changes that specific information and doesn't accidentally modify anything else. Sometimes when making corrections, people inadvertently change other fields without realizing it. Have her verify all information is still correct before submitting the correction.

•Thank you for this warning! I'll make sure we're very careful when making the correction. Her SAI score was pretty good on the initial application, so we definitely don't want to mess up anything else.

For anyone facing similar issues, here's a technical explanation of what's happening: The FAFSA has distinct correction pathways for student information vs. parent information. The parent dashboard only allows corrections to parent demographic data, household size, number in college, and financial information. Student academic information (like grade level) can only be edited through the student's FSA ID login. For the original poster: If you haven't submitted any changes in the parent portal, you can safely exit. Then have your daughter log in with her FSA ID, select 'Make FAFSA Correction,' navigate to the Student Demographics section, and update her grade level. The correction will take 3-5 days to process and update her SAI calculation and loan eligibility.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! We'll follow these exact steps. I feel much better knowing the specific process now.

Just went through this exact situation with my daughter's FAFSA! The key thing to remember is that grade level affects your loan limits - sophomores get lower annual loan limits than juniors. So definitely worth fixing! When we made the correction through her student portal, it only took about 4 days to reprocess and her school received the updated info automatically. Don't stress too much about the timing - schools are used to dealing with FAFSA corrections and it shouldn't delay her aid package significantly.

•That's really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this! I was so worried about delaying her financial aid, but it sounds like 4 days isn't too bad. Did you notice any change in her aid package after the grade level correction went through, or did the loan limits adjustment not affect the overall aid much?

I'm dealing with a similar FAFSA correction issue right now! Reading through all these responses has been super helpful. Just to confirm - if I exit out of the parent portal correction process without submitting anything, it won't create any kind of "pending correction" status that could interfere when my son tries to make his own corrections through the student portal later? I want to make sure we don't accidentally create conflicting correction requests in the system.
