FAFSA SAI increased and Pell Grant decreased after adding college codes - what happened?

I'm seriously freaked out right now about my son's FAFSA. I logged in today to add 3 more college codes (he got some late acceptance letters, yay!). Before adding these new schools, his Student Aid Index (SAI) was showing 5784. After submitting the additional codes, I checked again and now his SAI is 5788 and his estimated Pell Grant dropped by $100! Has anyone seen this happen? I didn't change ANY information about our finances or his status - literally just added college codes. Could this be a glitch in the system? Or does adding colleges somehow affect the calculation? I'm worried what else might change if we need to add more schools later.

Did you ever figure out why? Did you call the Federal Student Aid helpline?

This is actually a known issue with the new FAFSA system. When you add colleges, the system sometimes recalculates the SAI based on slightly different rounding methods or applies verification flags differently. A $4 change in SAI is extremely minor (though I understand the Pell reduction is frustrating). Unfortunately, the relationship between SAI changes and Pell Grant amounts isn't perfectly linear - there are specific thresholds where even a tiny SAI increase can reduce Pell by a set amount.

Thanks for explaining! Is there any way to get it back to the original calculation? Or appeal the Pell Grant amount? $100 might not seem like much but every bit counts for us.

Unfortunately, there's no way to revert to the previous calculation. The system uses the most recent data. For the Pell Grant, you could file an appeal if you have special circumstances (job loss, medical expenses), but not for this type of technical calculation change. The $4 SAI difference put you right at a threshold breakpoint.

I had the same experience with endless FAFSA phone waits until I found Claimyr.com. It lets you skip the wait time when calling Federal Student Aid - they call you when an agent is ready. Saved me 3+ hours of hold time when dealing with my twins' SAI verification issues. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that explains how it works.

The FAFSA system recalculates your SAI when you add schools because it runs through the entire formula again. Small differences can happen due to rounding at various steps. The $4 change pushed you just over a threshold for Pell Grant amounts. It's not a glitch - it's just unfortunate timing with the specific numbers in your case.

This is absolutely FALSE. Adding college codes does NOT change your SAI calculation. The calculation is based ONLY on your financial information. I've been a financial aid advisor for 9 years and the OP should contact FSA directly because this definitely sounds like a system error.

I apologize if I was mistaken. I was basing my comment on my experience with my son's FAFSA last month where we saw a small change after adding schools. Perhaps it was coincidental with another update.

Now I'm really confused. So should I contact FSA about this being an error? Has anyone successfully gotten this type of issue resolved?

have you checked if maybe you accidentally changed something else when adding the college codes? sometimes the system updates other stuff without telling you. happened to my nephew where his dad's income somehow changed when they added schools

I double-checked everything and don't see any changes to our information. All the income and asset numbers are identical to what we entered originally. That's why I'm so confused!

I went through something similar with my daughter's FAFSA. In our case, it turned out that when we added colleges, it triggered an automatic verification flag on her application, which slightly changed how some calculations were handled. The FSA helpline explained that certain colleges have different verification requirements that can affect how the system processes the application. Try calling the Federal Student Aid helpline (1-800-433-3243) to ask specifically about this issue. They can see exactly what changed in the system.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at Federal Student Aid after three days of trying. They confirmed this was a system issue related to how the new colleges were processed. Apparently adding certain colleges can trigger "verification flags" that slightly change how some numbers are calculated. The representative said they've seen this happen multiple times this year and acknowledged it's frustrating. She recommended we submit an appeal through our first-choice college's financial aid office rather than directly through FAFSA. Thanks everyone for your help!

Thank you for updating us! This is valuable information. Which college's financial aid office will you be working with for the appeal? Some are much more accommodating than others with these system-related issues.

We're going with State University - their financial aid office has been really helpful so far. The counselor there already said they can probably override the system calculation based on the documentation we have from the original SAI number.

This is really helpful information! I'm a newcomer here and just submitted my FAFSA last week. Reading through this thread makes me worried about adding more colleges later if my daughter gets off any waitlists. It's crazy that the system can change your SAI just from adding school codes - that seems like a major flaw. @Chloe Robinson thanks for following up with the resolution, it gives me hope that these issues can be fixed even if it takes some persistence. I'll definitely bookmark that Claimyr service someone mentioned in case I need to contact FSA.

Welcome to the community! You're smart to be thinking ahead about potential waitlist situations. Based on what we've all learned from this thread, if you do need to add schools later, maybe screenshot your current SAI and Pell amounts first so you have documentation if anything changes. And definitely keep that FSA phone number handy - sounds like having proof of the "before" numbers really helped Chloe with her appeal process.

As someone new to this community, I'm really grateful for all the detailed responses here! I just completed my FAFSA for my daughter last month and had no idea that adding college codes could potentially trigger these kinds of system changes. The fact that verification flags can be triggered by certain colleges is something I wish was more clearly communicated in the FAFSA instructions. @Chloe Robinson your persistence in getting answers and sharing the solution is so helpful - it sounds like working through the college's financial aid office rather than trying to fix it directly through FAFSA might be the way to go for these types of technical issues. I'm definitely going to take screenshots of our current numbers before making any changes, just in case!

Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new here and this thread has been such an eye-opener. I had no idea the FAFSA system could be this unpredictable. The screenshot idea is brilliant - I wish I had thought of that before I submitted mine. It's frustrating that these technical glitches can impact something so important for our kids' education. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and solutions here. Makes me feel less alone in navigating this complicated process!
